Grab the score and fly...
...else the score will disappear in a frenetic mob of opportunists.
A fairy rain day, and a cold wind was blowing.
I am sure that the seagulls watch the time on a church tower clock, as they all know to the minute when the fishing boats will return.
In the meanwhile, the fishermen clean some fish on the boats as they come in, and then as a thanksgiving they throw the fish innards into the water for the birds to eat. It is great fun to watch the birds in action, as when one bird grabs a piece then the other birds will all try to get it. I will show you the start of the flying bird above with the score in the photo below this one, as then you will see the mob's arrival.
There she was at the right on the water, and as the mob arrived, she had to flee with her score.
I love this old historical jetty, as in its prime, many years ago, many boats used it.
But now as you can see, it has become derelict, and the sea is eating it up.
These White-breasted Cormorants sat at the far tip of the jetty.
Back to the birds, and here below another fight was in progress.
A juvenile, at the left, was also grabbing a piece and the one above it shouted the alarm, "Attack guys, attack".
Just general mayhem on show.
And the rush was on to try and grab it.
Finally, there was peace for a while until the next boat comes in.
Like I said, it is great fun to watch the birds, and I have posted scenes like this a few times before. When the fishermen unload their catch from their boat in nets, then they take the fish into a fish cleaning station on the beach and after the fish are cleaned, they place it on tables for the public to buy. Many species of fish from Red Roman to Yellowtail, Tuna and Snoek, to name a few. Fresh fish, caught on the day, is the best to eat and the taste is so different from shop bought fish in the freezers. Two fresh fillets in a pan, or on a barbeque, is an ideal meal for us two. There are regular inspections by the health department of the fish, and the fishermen ensure that they go out far in their boats to get the best fish, as they make a living from it. It can get very dicey on the sea in the Cape of Storms, but these guys are all experts, and they know how to keep themselves safe.
Such is a fisherman's life.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures and story.
