Walk with me along the cliffs of the village of Saint Cirq Lapopie and the river Lot ~ France 🇫🇷

DISCOVER THE OTHER SIDE OF SAINT CIRQ LAPOPIE MOST TOURISTS MISS:
Walk with me through nature, along the cliffs of the village of Saint Cirq Lapopie and the river Lot ~ in France 🇫🇷
The village is literally perched on top of the steep cliff, but we won’t be visiting the village itself. We go… off the beaten path.
We will walk below it, along the river “LOT”, see some wildlife and pass by a lock. We walk over the footbridge and walls from the lock to enjoy the views of the beautiful old mill “Moulin de l’Aulanac”. As we walk further we walk along the cliff/ and the rock facade will tower high above us probably more than 200 meters. Where the town of Saint Cirq Lapopie is located, all the way on top. Our views along the way will show the village above us from below. We go through fields where we enjoy the birds singing and see hundreds of wildflowers.
Sounds interesting, come along!

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk #challenge. That is hosted by @tattoodjay every week on Wednesday.

Today’s photographic selection will be of 40 PHOTOGRAPHS
Date : 1 June 2025
The Photographs in this post are taken with my iPhone.
I will follow the time stamps on them. So it looks like you are experiencing my adventures on this walk to #discover everything what I saw, like the little #details seen through my eyes.

Location of Saint Cirq Lapopie in France we find on the following screenshot of Google Maps :
IMG_6604.jpeg
The route we walked from our overnight spot (see little van) you can see by the yellow route (line).

More information about the village you find on the following websites in English: Saint Cirq Lapopie - Cahors vallee du Lot and Wikipedia- Saint Cirq Lapopie

Shall we start our walk now, to discover the stunning beauty and nature this area has to offer?

Great… let’s go!

We start at the campgrounds where we parked our little van Beth.
The view along the river towards the bridge you see below.
IMG_9752.jpeg

There is a walking path along the river, overgrown but it was still visible to me going from the back side of the campgrounds towards it.
I hear a sound… water rushing… it must be a dam. Let’s check it out where the sound comes from. In the distance I see something.
IMG_9754.jpeg

Let me zoom in for you. A heron… sitting on a tree trunk waiting for fish to come by. Do you see him?
IMG_9755.jpeg

Zooming in further. There he is. He found a stunning spot to fish.
IMG_9758.jpeg

In front of the little island and heron we see a little dam. You hear the water rushing over it. This is where the sound came from.
IMG_9761.jpeg

As the path narrows we are still following the river Lot, we see in the distance a building. Maybe we will walk by.
IMG_9762.jpeg

The little dirt path ends up at the little road. We see the building and walk towards it to check it out.
IMG_9764.jpeg

Getting closer by we see it is an old mill. Moulin de l’Aulanac. We will discover more of it in a few moments as we walk further.
IMG_9765.jpeg

It has beautiful roses growing along the road. I had to capture them.
IMG_9767.jpeg

Although there is chopped wood 🪵 under a roof on the side, it looks #abandoned.
IMG_9768.jpeg

Just behind the old mill, we find this sign. A little path goes down towards the river again and the locks. Shall we check them out?
IMG_9770.jpeg

Walking down… and peeking out of the trees, stepping on the walls from the lock… we see:
Our view towards the left is breathtaking. I present to you the village of Saint Cirq Lapopie. Perched high on top of the rock / cliffs. We see its old and large church being the dominant feature. The village is behind it. Spread out.
IMG_9772.jpeg

The view towards the right is also breathtaking. The old mill.
IMG_9773.jpeg

It looks like a fairytale. Such a stunning location and mill. The green vegetation running down from the roof’s edge along the old walls. The little balcony and long chimney. So romantic, don’t you think?
My favourite photo of today.
IMG_9774.jpeg

We wander over the lock and its footbridge, walls. On the other side of the river we take a look at the village again. So beautiful.
IMG_9776.jpeg

Let me zoom in on the church. It is literally right on the cliff’s edge.
IMG_9779.jpeg

This little village is classed one of the most beautiful village in France. It has houses dating back to the 12th and 15th century with many historical monuments (as we could read on above’s website for more info), we won’t be visiting them though… as I want to show you the other side of this village… off the beaten paths.

We continue our walk and turn back one time as we walk on the little road again. We see the lock we walked over and along.
IMG_9780.jpeg

After a little while we find ourselves under the village, along the very high cliffs / rock facade. The Lot river is very close by now. A little wall runs next to the road.
IMG_9783.jpeg

On this little wall I see all different kinds of vegetation. I go and capture a few. The red colour of this succulent like plant is stunning.
IMG_9784.jpeg

Next to it we see these tiny little purple flowers from the ivy between the mosses.
IMG_9785.jpeg

As we walk in the shade of the cliffs now, there are two, very very very steep paths. One going up to the village and one going down. I won't be taking any of them for sure. Way too steep and slippery as it had rained. At the path that seems to be coming down the hill at the end of the village I see these signs.
IMG_9786.jpeg

We walk further and see forest appearing on the right. Between the river and the little road we walk on. Only small cars can drive on it in one way. A wider car isn’t recommended haha
IMG_9787.jpeg

As I always look for details. I see while walking past the forest… a little path. Of course I had to check out where it is going to.
Add the end the forest opened up and one can see the river again. But to my surprise… I am standing at a large vegetable plot.
I guess villagers from above cleared this space and planted vegetables here.
IMG_9788.jpeg

It does look well kept and recently planted.
IMG_9789.jpeg

Unwanted visitors kept out by an electric ⚡️ fence that runs all the way around it.
What a nice find.
IMG_9790.jpeg

We find a little dirt path again and follow it further. Following the river that is on our right. We see fields… and some houses in the distance. The village is wayyyyyy towards the left. Not visible from here. As we walked a long while.
IMG_9791.jpeg

We pass by a few farms.
IMG_9793.jpeg

In the fields I see hundreds of wildflowers, even wild garlic or is it onion?
IMG_9795.jpeg

Beautiful daisies everywhere.
IMG_9797.jpeg

And purple flowers in the undergrowth. We hear many birds singing in the trees around us.
IMG_9798.jpeg

We are very close to the edge of the river again. We see a building on top of the rock.
IMG_9801.jpeg

And below it a viaduct. Do you see it?
IMG_9802.jpeg

We are walking back now, the loop on the map above in yellow.
Those houses have such a beautiful location. Looking over the fields towards the river.
IMG_9803.jpeg

Once back at the campground. We make a cappuccino and rest a bit after our long walk.
IMG_9808.jpeg

Our views for the evening.
IMG_9809.jpeg

Here you can see, we are parked right on the river.
IMG_9810.jpeg

A very peaceful location. This was day 2 of us sleeping / living in the van. Literally camping next to it because inside is only a mattress on the floor and our camping gear.
IMG_9811.jpeg

When I left my friends and family in southern france, I prepared some one pot dinners and froze them. During our first 2 days these defrosted… and I could easily warm them up for dinner in the evening. Are you staying for dinner?
IMG_9812.jpeg

Such a lovely spot to relax… and camp 🏕️
IMG_9815.jpeg

At night we say bye bye… until next time. Are you joining me again for a walk?
