Rusty Beauty

I'm sharing some of my photo collection titled Rusty Beauty. I often seek the beauty of life through rusty things. Of course, there are some melancholy feelings, heavy history, and deeper emotional layers in rusty objects. However, we are often drawn to that sorrow.

In Japanese culture, there is a concept of beauty called Wabi-sabi.
Wabi-sabi is a traditional Japanese aesthetic and philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity. Wabi refers to a humble, rustic beauty, appreciating the simple, quiet, and modest things.
Sabi is about the beauty of age, the graceful wear, patina, and transience of things. Together, wabi-sabi values what is natural, weathered, imperfect, and fleeting. It's like a cracked tea bowl, falling leaves, or fading colours.
It reminds us to accept and appreciate life as it is: incomplete, impermanent, and imperfect.

Yes! I think I’m drawn to rusty things because I see the Wabi-sabi spirit in them.

Also, there’s something about ocean life, near the sea, everything rusts and becomes "shabby chic" so quickly. I enjoy capturing those textures and colours in my daily life.

The other day, I went for a drive with my husband to the countryside, a bit farther from where we live. That’s when I saw this rusty, classic-looking truck sitting in a field. The view was stunning. It caught my eye right away.

The colour of the truck was just perfect.

Of course, people can’t drive it anymore. But just look at the body shape, door handles, roof, window frames, front face, tires, everything looks so cool. I imagined someone driving it for many years.

Even after its life as a car ended, it still captivates people, now just sitting in nature like this.

These anchors are so inspiring. They are real pieces of ocean life. I can almost read the history in them, how fishermen used these anchors for their ships over the years. They now look like art on the beach.

This railroad sits on the edge of town, even though no train runs anymore. It feels sad, sorrowful, and deeply emotional to witness this. I sometimes enjoy walking along the tracks.

This is the same spot where my dog posed in the first photo. The monument isn’t actually that old. I think the town built it as a sightseeing attraction. Still, being near the ocean naturally adds a rusty coating to it, year by year.

This barn also tells the story of farming history. I’ve taken a photo of it before, but every time I visit, I feel the presence of the past. The building next to it isn’t that old, but this barn has been here for a long time, I believe. You can tell from its rusty colours.

錆びる美しさ

「錆びる美しさ」と題した写真コレクションを投稿します。錆びたものが美しいと感じることが多々あります。もちろん、物悲しく、重たい歴史、深い感情などが錆びから垣間見られることがあると思います。それでも、やっぱり哀愁のようなものを感じるのが錆びの良さなのではないかと思います。

日本には侘び寂びを重んじる文化がありますね。侘び寂びは、不完全さ・無常さ・簡素さの中に美しさを見出す、日本の伝統的な美意識・哲学です。

侘びは質素で控えめな美しさ、静けさや素朴さを愛でる心を表していて、寂びは、時を経たものの美しさや、古びていく中でにじみ出る風情を意味するのだそうです。この２つが合わさった侘び寂びは、たとえばヒビの入った茶碗や、色あせた木の柱、落ち葉など、自然な経年変化や不完全さにこそ美があるという考え方です。人生の「不完全・無常・不均衡」を受け入れ、それを慈しむ心でもあります。

その通りだと思います。錆びに侘び寂びの概念を感じるから、錆びたものが美しく思えるのでしょうか。

さらに、海辺の暮らしも関係していると思います。海の近くでは、あらゆるものが錆びていきますし、あっという間にシャビーシック的な色合いになります。日々の暮らしの中でそういった色合いを見つけると、自然とワクワクします。

これは、先日、田舎の方まで少し遠出をしてドライブに出かけたときに目に飛び込んできたトラックです。錆サビのクラシックカーが野原に停車していました。とても素敵な眺めでした。一瞬でこれは！と目が惹かれました。

トラックの錆の色の感じが最高ですね。

もちろん、もうこのままでは運転することなどできないと思います。車体、ドアノブ、屋根、窓枠、車の顔、タイヤ、すべてが完璧な形です。はるか昔にこのトラックを運転していた様子を想像します。

車としての人生を終えたとしても、こうして自然の中でオブジェとして人々を魅了しているのではないかと思います。

このイカリは素晴らしい。これこそ海辺の生活そのものといったイメージがします。長年、毎日のように船を出して、このイカリを使用していた漁師さんの姿が目に浮かぶようです。今は、海辺のアートになっているようです。

この線路は町の外れに残されたものです。もう列車は走っていないので、ひっそりとそこにあります。物悲しく、哀愁が漂っている感じがしますし、そんな深い感情を目撃しているような気がします。ときどき、線路の上を歩くのが好きです。

これは最初の犬がポーズをとっている写真と同じ場所です。このモニュメントは特に古いわけではないです。町が観光用に設置した新めのアートです。ただ、潮風が、年々色合いを変えて、錆に磨きをかけています。

この納屋も歴史を感じます。この納屋の写真は以前撮ったことがあるのですが、この場所に行くとやはり気になって写真をとってしまいます。納屋の隣に建っている建物はそこまで古いようには見えません。この納屋はかなり古いもののように感じます。屋根の錆び具合から歴史を感じるのではないでしょうか。
