A Morning Encounter with a Cute Fox

I love foxes very much. I think they are one of my totem animals. I feel a deep connection with foxes, especially in snowy countries. A fox is such a clever, smart, and playful animal, even though many folk tales describe them as tricksters or cheeky figures. I don’t see them that way, but I believe I need to maintain a healthy boundary with them.

One day last autumn, I saw a female fox in our garden who was probably looking for food. She looked like she was pregnant. She seemed so scared when she bumped into my dog. My dog was very curious and wanted to play with her. He was especially attracted by the scent of her pregnancy. She tried to protect herself and scratched my dog. I couldn’t stop my dog from barking loudly, because he was so excited and trying to get closer to her.

Finally, my husband called him in a powerful voice, and my dog stepped back from her. She ran away and hid under the shed for a while. We had to block off our shed because I didn’t want her to be scared in our yard again. I didn’t mind having her there, but I needed to be careful about disease. We also needed to take my dog to the vet just in case. He had to receive some early vaccinations.

Later in the story, we saw a male fox in the big field this early spring, after all the snow had disappeared. He was peeking at us from a distance. He looked curious and seemed to be looking for his dinner, I guess. I wanted to talk to him, but I knew my dog might not be able to stop himself from getting too close.

Furthermore, this was also a very happy story. When I was walking in the forest early in the morning, after my early shift, I saw a young fox jump out from the forest on the right side of my dog and me. The fox looked like a male with a white-tipped tail. He didn’t notice us at first and skipped across the road.

To me, he looked like he was whistling and skipping. I guess he had just left his mother and siblings that spring. A fox’s life is quite tough after they grow up. Even though they want to play with their siblings for a long time, they have to become independent and live on their own. The young male fox looked like he was enjoying his solo life.

I enjoyed watching the moment. My dog was very quiet. We paused for a while, then the fox noticed us. He jumped off the road and immediately made a sound like “Eek!” and ran quickly into the forest on our left. The sound of his voice sounded almost human! I was so happy to hear it. My dog became excited by his scent. Luckily, I was using his leash, so he didn’t chase after him. The fox completely disappeared into the deep forest. I basked in the afterglow for a while.

I didn’t bring my phone, so I couldn’t take a photo of him. Instead, I made a shadow puppet of a fox with my hand. I used to make fox shapes like this when I was a child. Making shadow puppets is such a classic and joyful play.

The sunset was so beautiful that day. I love taking photos of sunsets from my window. I hope to meet the fox again someday soon.

かわいい狐に出くわした朝

私はキツネがとても好きです。キツネは私にとってトーテムアニマルの１つだと思っています。特に雪国にいるキツネには、深いつながりのようなものを感じます。

キツネはとても賢く、頭が良く、遊び好きな動物だと思います。民話ではずる賢いトリックスターや小悪魔のように描かれることも多いですが、私はそうは感じません。ただ、彼らとは適切な距離を保つ必要があるとも思っています。

昨秋のある日、庭で雌のキツネを見かけました。おそらく食べ物を探していたのだと思います。そのキツネは妊娠しているように見えました。

そのキツネは、うちの犬と鉢合わせしたとき、とても怯えているようでした。犬はとても好奇心が強く、彼女と遊びたがっていました。特に妊娠の匂いに強く惹かれていたようです。キツネは身を守ろうとして、犬をひっかこうとしました。犬は興奮して激しく動いていたため、私は止めることができませんでした。

最終的に、夫が力強い声で犬を呼び戻し、犬はキツネから離れました。キツネは走って逃げ、その後しばらく物置の下に隠れていました。

もう二度とキツネに怖い思いをさせたくなかったので、私たちは物置の隙間を塞ぎました。来てくれること自体は嫌ではありませんでしたが、伝染病などの病気のこともあるため注意が必要でした。念のため、犬も獣医に連れて行き、早めのワクチン接種を受けました。

その後、今年の早春、雪がすべて解けた頃に広い野原で雄のキツネを見かけました。彼は少し離れた場所から私たちをうかがっていました。好奇心があり、食べ物を探しているように見えました。話しかけたい気持ちもありましたが、犬がまた近づいてしまいそうで、それはできませんでした。

さらに、とても楽しい出来事が起きました。早朝のシフトの後、森の横を散歩していたときのことです。右側の森から、若くて可愛らしいキツネが飛び出してきました。

そのキツネは白いラインが入った尻尾の雄のキツネのように見えました。最初は私たちに気づかず、道を軽やかに跳ねながら横切っていきました。

私には、まるで口笛を吹きながらスキップしているように見えました。おそらくその春に母親や兄弟から離れたばかりだったのでしょう。キツネは成長すると単独で生きなければならず、幼い頃のように長く兄弟と遊んではいられません。それでも、その若いキツネは１人の生活を楽しんでいるように見えました。

私はその瞬間を見て、とても幸せな気持ちになりました。犬もとても静かでした。しばらく立ち止まっていると、そのキツネはこちらに気づきました。

彼は道から跳び上がり、「きゃーっ！」といった声を上げて、すぐに私たちの左側の森へと走り去っていきました。その鳴き声はまるで人間のようで、とても印象的でした。私はその声を聞けたことが嬉しかったです。

犬はそのキツネの匂いに興奮しましたが、私はリードを付けていたので追いかけることはできませんでした。キツネは深い森の中へ完全に姿を消しました。私はしばらくその余韻に浸っていました。

その日は携帯を持っていなかったので写真は撮れませんでしたが、代わりに手でキツネの影絵を作りました。子どもの頃からよくやっていた遊びです。影絵遊びはとても懐かしく、楽しいものです。

その日の夕日はとても美しかったです。私は窓から夕日を撮るのが好きです。またいつか、キツネに会えたらいいなと思っています。
