I left home a little before 7:00 AM and, surprisingly, the town's streets were busier than usual. I suppose it has to do with the fact that today, Tuesday, most public elementary and high schools are holding classes (due to teacher shortages and other issues within the profession, some schools don't hold classes every day of the week). But the fact is, this morning seemed quite busy. Also, the fog, as often happens, drifted gently through the streets...

Salí de casa cerca un poco antes de las 7:00 AM y sorpresivamente, las calles del pueblo estaban más activas de lo acostumbrado. Supongo que tiene que ver con el hecho de que hoy Martes, en la mayoría de las escuelas y secundarias publicas, se imparten clases a el alumnado (debido a la escasez de docentes y otros problemas relativos al gremio, no se imparten clases todos los días de la semana en algunos centros educativos). Pero el hecho es que hoy la mañana parecía bastante ajetreada. Además, la niebla, tal como en muchas ocasiones, se paseaba por las calles con parsimonia...

I grabbed my camera and wandered aimlessly through the streets... People were talking loudly as they walked, cycled, or even rode their motorcycles; I overheard that the town would be receiving visits from central government officials today, so I assumed that much of this activity was also related to that (here, "populism" dramatically permeates every social stratum, and the mere visit of an outside official creates all sorts of expectations among ordinary people)... I know this sounds strange, but it's part of our "political landscape" and can be felt on every street and even inside homes...

Tomé mi cámara y me fui a deambular por las calles sin rumbo fijo... Las personas conversaban en voz alta mientras iban a pie, en bicicleta o en sus motocicletas; así me enteré que el pueblo recibiría hoy visitas de funcionarios del gobierno central hoy, así que supuse que buena parte de esta actividad también tenía que ver con ese hecho (aquí el "populismo" es algo que permea de manera dramática todo el tejido social, y la simple visita de un funcionario externo, causa expectativas de diversa índole entre la gente común)... Ya sé que esto suena extraño, pero es parte de nuestro "paisaje político" y se puede palpar en cada calle y hasta dentro delas casas...

I thought it would be interesting to capture and share these photos of streets that I usually show as more deserted, now with more people coming and going... I also noticed, due to the fog and the kind of flat light it creates, I suppose, the accelerated deterioration of the town's streets, which seems to have intensified in recent months, resulting in more untidy streets, a lack of urban ornamentation, faded facades, and all that air of decay typical of urban spaces subjected to times of severe crisis...

Me pareció interesante capturar y compartir con ustedes estas fotos de calles las cuales por lo general muestro más solitarias, ahora con más gente yendo y viniendo... También me percaté, debido a la niebla y a esa especie de luz plana que esta genera, supongo, del acelerado deterioro de las calles del pueblo, el cual parece haber acelerado estos últimos meses, traduciéndose en calles más desprolijas, falta de ornato urbano, fachadas de colores deslucidos, y todo ese aire de decadencia típico de los espacios urbanos sometidos a los tiempos de severas crisis...

I walked the streets for over two hours, and the fog today conspired to make me do just that, lingering longer than usual and blanketing the town and its valley... Over the years, I've become "simply an observer," and this applies both to me walking down the street taking photos and to my thoughts and ability to interact with others and share opinions...

Caminé por las calles durante más de dos horas, y la niebla hoy conspiró para que hiciese eso, pues estuvo más tiempo del acostumbrado cubriendo el valle del pueblo y su casco urbano... Con el paso de los años me ido convirtiendo en "simplemente alguien que observa" y esto aplica tanto para el hecho de ir yo por una calle haciendo fotos, como para efectos de mis pensamientos y capacidad de interactuar con otros y compartir opiniones...

So, while everyone else is busy doing what they have to do, I appear around street corners, observing and clicking my camera. The same thing happens when someone stops and greets me, then tries to question me about current political and social events in the town and its surroundings; then I just give evasive answers, vague responses, sometimes even incoherent ones, or I simply change the subject. More than fifty years of living here have taught me that to be able to walk through the entire town repeatedly without problems or conflicts, you have to be relatively "colorless and transparent" to others... I don't mean that I don't have clear positions or opinions; I mean that it's a good "tactical" approach not to inadvertently blurt out what you think... We have a very common saying here: "Small town, big hell," and this phrase dates back to colonial times, so there must be some truth to it! 😂

Así que, mientras todos están activos haciendo lo que tienen que hacer; yo voy apareciendo por las esquinas callejeras observando y haciendo "clicks" con mi cámara. Otro tanto sucede cuando alguien se detiene y me saluda para luego interpelarme sobre asuntos que tienen que ver con el acontecer político y social del pueblo y sus alrededores; entonces yo solo cumplo con responder evasivas, respuestas vagas, incluso algunas incoherencias o procedo a cambiar de tópico. Más de cincuenta años de vivir aquí, me ha enseñado que para poder recorrer todo el pueblo repetidamente sin problemas ni conflictos, hay que ser relativamente "incoloro y transparente" para los otros... No me refiero a que yo no tenga posiciones ni opiniones claras; me refiero a que es un buen proceder "táctico", no poner lo que se piensa en oídos de todos incautamente... Aquí tenemos un dicho muy común y dice así: "Pueblo chico, infierno grande" y esta frase data de épocas de la colina ¡algo de cierta ha de tener! 😂
