Occasionally photography is purely casual. In recent days I was checking my Tokina ATX-PRO 100mm f/2.8 d MACRO lens with the idea of verifying that the fungus that once attacked it was still absolutely dead... I did this using the light from one of the few lamps in my house in which we still use incandescent bulbs (almost all of them have been replaced by LEDS bulbs).

De vez en cuando las fotografía es algo puramente casual. En días pasados estaba revisando mi lente Tokina ATX-PRO 100mm f/2.8 d MACRO con la idea de comprobar que los hongos que una vez le atacaron continuasen absolutamente muertos... Esto lo hice valiéndose de la luz de una de las pocas lamparas en mi casa en las cuales seguimos usando bombillas incandescentes (casi la totalidad han sido sustituida por bombillas que usan LEDS).

In fact, while doing this review, it occurred to me to mount the lens on the camera and take a couple of pictures as a purely hobby... And then, surprise surprise... I was delighted with what I saw on the camera's screen!

Lo cierto es que haciendo esta revisión, se me ocurrió montar el lente en la cámara y hacer un par de fotos a modo de puro pasatiempo... Y entonces ¡sorpresa!... ¡Quedé encantado con lo que vi en la pantalla de la cámara!.

So I immediately decided to take more pictures right then and there and mentally went through which lamps were still using incandescent bulbs at home... It turned out that there are only three: A reading lamp in my bedroom (which I was using at the time of checking my macro lens), another small table lamp in the dining room with a small candle type bulb and another bulb in the old storage room in the backyard, which is rarely used.

Así que de inmediato decidí hacer más fotos en ese mismo momento y mentalmente repasé cuales eran las lámparas que seguían usando bombillas incandescentes en casa... Resultó que solo son tres: Una lampara de lectura en mi cuarto (la cual estaba usando al momento de revisar mi objetivo macro), otra pequeña lampara de mesa en el comedor con un pequeño bombillo tipo vela y otra bombilla en el viejo depósito del patio trasero, el cual se usa muy pocas veces.

So I set to work and tried to have a nice time taking close-up and almost macro shots of these bulbs.

Así que puse manos a la obra y procuré pasar un agradable rato haciendo fotos de acercamiento y unas prácticamente macros de estas bombillas.

I did all this trying to take full shots of the bulbs, some a bit closer and some close enough to take advantage of the 1:1 ratio of the lens to appreciate the "innards" of the bulbs and their lovely filaments.

Hice todo esto procurando hacer fotos completas de las bombillas, otras un poco más cercanas y algunas lo suficientemente cerca como para aprovechar más la relación 1:1 del lente y poder apreciar esas "entrañas" de las bombillas y sus encantadores filamentos.

Obviously, I wanted to avoid any unnecessary risk for my eyes when focusing so I decided to take my sunglasses out of my drawer (I rarely use them) and use them as protection to be able to observe as comfortably as possible through the viewfinder of my camera and perform the focus management as comfortably as possible.

Obviamente, quise evitar algún innecesario riesgo para mis ojos al enfocar así que decidí sacar de mi gaveta mis lentes para el sol (rara vez las uso) y usarlas a modo de protección para poder observar lo más cómodo posible a través del visor de mi cámara y realizar la gestión de enfoque lo más cómodamente posible.

Focusing was a bit tricky, especially when focusing specifically on the bright burning filaments, so there I had to use manual focus and be guided by the focus indicator in the viewfinder of the camera... For the more open shots it was enough to use single-point autofocus and I did it all with camera in hand... I still have a good hand despite the passing of time hehehehehe :-) Also the very high shutter speeds avoided any kind of camera shake.

El enfoque fue un poco complicado, en especial al momento de hacerlo específicamente en los luminosos filamentos ardientes, así que allí tuve que usar enfoque manual y guiarme por el indicador de enfoque del visor de la cámara... Para los planos más abiertos bastó usar enfoque automático de punto simple y todo lo hice con cámara en mano... Aún tengo buen pulso a pesar del paso del tiempo je je je :-) Además las velocidades de obturación tan altas evitaban cualquier tipo de trepidación.

Regarding the settings, it has to be said that this lens is very bright and under these conditions (aiming at lit bulbs) I would have to make some effort to achieve a good underexposure, which would allow me to get pictures dark enough to generate the desired "drama" and visual eloquence. Because after all, what I wanted to achieve was a relatively abstract type of photo and not a simple "light bulb burning the whole visual plane"...

Con respecto a los ajustes, hay que decir que este objetivo es muy luminoso y bajo estas condiciones (apuntar hacia bombillas encendidas) tendría que hacer algún esfuerzo para logar una buena sub-exposición, la cual me permitiese obtener fotos los suficientemente obscuras para generar el "drama" y la elocuencia visual deseada. Porque después de todo, lo que deseaba lograr era un tipo de fotos relativamente abstractas y ni una simple "bombilla encendida quemando todo el plano visual"...

When there is plenty of light and you are going to do something out of the ordinary, it is best to try the full manual mode (M) and poke around with a few test shots until you get the "winning combination".

Cuando sobra luz y se va a hacer algo fuera de lo acostumbrado, lo mejor es probar con el modo absolutamente manual (M) hurgar con algunas fotos de prueba hasta lograr la "combinación ganadora".

In this case, that combination was quite easy to achieve... Actually there were two combinations:
(1) -For normal close-ups: ISO 100, Shutter speed 1/8000s and aperture F/8.
(2) -For the macros: ISO 100, Shutter speed 1/5000s and aperture F/10.

En este caso, esa combinación fue bastante fácil de lograr... En realidad fueron dos combinaciones:
(1) -Para los acercamientos normales: ISO 100, Velocidad de obturación 1/8000s y apertura F/8.
(2) -Para los macros: ISO 100, Velocidad de obturación 1/5000s y apertura F/10.

Regarding processing, all photos were captured in RAW format and processed with Adobe Camera Raw where sharpness, light, temperature and clarity adjustments were made.... The resulting JPGs were processed for minor retouching in Photoscape CS6 XE and watermarking and horizon adjustment with PhotoScape 6.3.1.

Con respecto al procesamiento, todas las fotos fueron capturadas en formato RAW y procesadas con Adobe Camera Raw en donde se realizaron ajustes de nitidez, luz, temperatura y claridad... Los JPG resultantes fueron procesados para retoque menores en Photoscape CS6 XE y la marca de agua y ajuste de horizonte con PhotoScape 6.3.1.
