Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well.
Today, I’d like to share some photos of the stone carvings at the Nanda Devi Temple in Almora. Dedicated to Goddess Nanda, the patron deity of the Kumaon region, this centuries-old temple holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for the people of Uttarakhand.

When I visited, I found myself completely drawn to its walls. Every corner seemed alive with stories—graceful figures of gods and goddesses, wild animals, scenes carved from ancient myths, and even subtle erotic imagery.

It made me realize these details weren’t just carved in stone. Rather, they were carved with intention. In traditional Indian temple art, such depictions weren’t meant to shock or decorate; they spoke of life itself. Fertility, creation, and human intimacy were seen as sacred expressions of existence. In a way, these carvings also worked as a form of ancient sex education—teaching through art that sexuality wasn’t something to hide, but a part of nature and spiritual balance. They remind us that the path to the divine often flows through the essence of being human.

It was amusing to see these fresh leaves sprouting near these ancient carvings. 😄

As I walked along the temple walls, my eyes were drawn to other fascinating carvings—this time of animals, with a floral motif placed at the center or somewhere nearby.

I couldn’t quite understand the meaning of these motifs, and even my online research didn’t help. I wonder if anyone here might be able to shed some light.

Yet, standing there, it truly felt as if the stones were whispering stories from long ago. It’s incredible how something so ancient can still hold so much life and spirit.
