Troodos Village & Mount Olympus

My Spanish girlfriend says that Czechs are surprisingly passionate mountain trekking lovers considering that our highest peak is Sněžka with mere 1,603 m. She’s right, I insisted on climbing up to Mount Olympus 1,952 metres (6,404 ft) even thought it cost us a day or two that we could spent swimming and sunbathing at a beach. The trek was definitely worth it even though reaching the peak did not meet my expectations. Just like during our last vacation in Mallorca, we did a two-day trek in one day. This post covers the first part to the peak, a stroll around it the way back to Troodos. By the way, getting to Troodos may be tricky, see my previous post!

T. tvrdí, že Češi jsou až překvapivě zamilovaní do horských túr, když vezmeme v potaz, že naše nejvyšší hora má pouhých 1 603 metrů. Ale má pravdu. Trval jsem na tom, že zdoláme Olympus s jeho 1 952 metry přesto, že nás to stálo jeden nebo dva plážové dny. Ta túra za to stála, i když vylézt na Olympus moc smysl nemá. Každopádně stejně jako loni na Mallorce, i tady jsme zvládli dvoudenní trasu za den. Tenhle post pokryje první polovinu, cestu na vrchol, okolo Olympu a pak zpátky do Troodosu.

Tohle je ve skutečnosti večer před naším trekem. Ale přišlo mi fajn začít touhle fotkou.

I am not sure if anyone actually lives in Troodos. It is a tourist and winter sports centre (yes, people actually ski in Cyprus!) with two hotels, several restaurants, a bunch of souvenir shops and few residential buildings. However, they most likely serve as a second homes.

Nejsem si jistý, jestli v Troodosu někdo opravdu žije. Je to centrum turistiky a zimních sportů (ano, na Kypru se opravdu lyžuje!) se dvěma hotely, několika restauracemi, pár obchůdky a sem tam nějakou obytnou budovou. Ty ale asi slouží spíš jako chalupy.

They are both a way to go, Atalante would be lets say a half-day trip as you keep your elevation most of the time. Artemis trail is just 6 or 7 kilometres long. And can you see the greyish area on the peak? It is the reason why not to go there… But lets see some pictures from the hike first.

Výstřižek z Mapy.cz, našinci asi není třeba doporučovat. Všimněte si okruhů Atalante a Artemis, oba dva stojí za procházku. Atalante zabere asi půlden, držíte se na vrstevnici a cesta je fajn. Artemis má asi jen 6 až 7 kilometrů. A vidíte tu šedivou zónu na vrcholu? Tak ta ukrývá důvod, proč tam nelézt... Ale napřed pár fotek.

I have to admit that Cypriot forests smell amazingly fresh and pleasant. Hard to describe, thought, you must visit them yourselves. I believe it is because some of the pines are almost one millennium old. We met several 500+ years old trees, that’s one of them.

Lesy na Kypru mají zvláštní vůni, a velmi příjemnou. Těžko se popisuje, musíte se tam vypravit sami. Myslím, že je to i proto, že některé z tamních borovic jsou staré skoro tisíc let. My narazili na pár více než pětisetletých stromů. Tohle je jeden z nich.

Definitely not an observatory, a military base… Cyprus still struggles with the division and there are several bases in the mountains. The entire peak area is restricted, and you can hardly capture some nice pictures there. That’s why I suggest anyone to take the round-trails instead.

Žádná observatoř, vojenská základna. Kypr stále trpí rozdělením ostrova a v horách je základen hned několik. Celý vrchol hory je nepřístupný a těžko tam vyfotíte nějaké hezké snímky. Proto každému doporučuju vydat se po okružních trasách.

We decided to return by the paved road and see the ski resort few hundred metres far from the peak. For somebody who skies since he was three years old, the ski areal looks funny. My girlfriend, however, hadn’t skid before she come to the Czech Republic and found the place nice.

Dolů jsme se rozhodli jít po silnici, abychom viděli lyžařské středisko pár set metrů od vrcholu. Pro někoho, kdo lyžuje od tří let, vypadá komicky. T. poprvé stála na lyžích až v Česku, v Krkonoších, a areál jí přišel fajn.
