The Dark Side

As I said yesterday in my post, it was the day to visit some of the newly opened exhibitions and one of them was a solo photo exhibition, called by The Dark Side, by Claudiu Szabó, an exceptional talent in my opinion and not only regarding photography.

I visited this textile exhibition, a photo exhibition that is coming tomorrow and a sculpture exhibition and literally blew my mind. I'm just laughing how so many are calling themselves photographers, artists and so on, while photographing weed at the side of the road and posting blurry photos that you can't even see what it is (no offense) and have no idea what real photography or art is.

This is what I said yesterday in my post and today you're going to see why I said it.

Today I decided to post only the best (considered the best by me) photos of the exhibition, or the most appreciated by me.

The particularity of this exhibition was how the photographer matched the photos with a short story. The stories are in Romanian and at first I thought I'd translate them for you, but that would mean spending the rest of my life translating these texts and most likely the meaning would be lost in translation. So instead, I'll try to share my thoughts and maybe the meaning of the text, if it's not too long.

Recipe For Kitsch

The title of this photo, or the title of the text is Recipe for kitsch and the you get the description of how to create a kitschy photo, in a sarcastic way. If you look at the photo, nothing is kitschy here, on the contrary. You rarely see such original idea and execution. Simple, yet perfect in my eyes.

Stockholm, The Syndrome

For those of you who don't know what Stockholm syndrome is, and are lazy to look it up, here it is:

Stockholm syndrome is a proposed condition or theory that tries to explain why hostages sometimes develop a psychological bond with their captors. Emotional bonds can possibly form between captors and captives, during intimate time together, but these are considered irrational by some in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims.

Most likely we don't see the same thing, or don't read the photo the same way, and that is fine, but I see a very dominant and possibly abusive mother and his son. I love the simple setup, the simple background, the walls, which in a way symbolizes captivity. Look at the expression on the face of the woman and her fist on the table.

The story is (possibly) about the author, who hit a girl in school for taking his place. The next day the girl gave him water, then she started to share her lunch with him, which became a daily habit. Later they met in high school, stayed in the same bench and she helped him every time he needed. He says he only noticed her beauty later. Is it true? Who knows. I hope not.

Interview With Myself

It says: "I had the kindness of replying to one question: Why are you acting? (To be understood as acting in a theater) After denying it twice and giving some evasive answer, she admits maybe it's a way of resisting, coping with life I suppose.

In any case, the photo, or the look on her face says a lot. She's deep in her thoughts and this is an important question. I suppose we are all acting at times as we need to resist, cope with many situations, regardless if we like it or not.

Marginal Universe

Heartbreaking photo, but it is reality at some parts of the world.

I'm going to translate this:

He doesn't know where his mother is. He doesn't know his father either. He doesn't know he has the sky all for himself. He doesn't even know there are others like him. For him, people are all the same, they are those who are passing by him. It's a leap year, same lies, same dramas, same deceiving happiness, the actors are different each time, those who drew the short straw. Only the ice cream is pink.

I'm not sure if the meaning gets through or it is lost in translation, but the description/text is prefect. It describes perfectly the world of this poor kid and the other world, which is not his.

Feeding The Wolves

He says:

An old Indian man has thought him to listen to himself. The Indian man has also told him to be careful with the two wolves who live inside him. They say one is going to win and is going to dominate him. He can't come to term with the idea, but he wants to postpone the moment for as long as possible. Now his own pain and physical sacrifice covers the screaming of the black wolf and the belief that he's special is feeding the kindness of the white wolf. However, trying to trick them, is contrary to existence. I think I'm heading towards addiction, the addiction of feeling!

Tell me this is not beautiful. It's scary though and sad as well, but it's extraordinary and describes the photo well.

The Perfect Trap

Without knowing what the text says, you can see perfection on the photo I suppose, although (no offense), some of it is fake, or artificial.

I know what I want. There's no need to choose, it's not my style. I have chosen to not have to choose. It's simple. I have the the safety of a determined person, no one can change me ... on the other hand I don't think I'd want that, the offer is complete. ... says her, knowing that the free referee actually do not exist.

I keep saying after each exhibition that I've never seen anything like that, and it applies here too. Unbelievable how well those texts go with the photos. They make you think deep and see the connection between the text and the photo. This is what I call exceptional talent.

Regarding the title, yes, there's always a The Dark Side, contrary to appearances.

Unfortunately I struggled a lot with aligning lines as these photos were printed on cardboards, were not straight and the hanging was done ... well, it wasn't perfect. The size of the boards were also bigger than usual and sometimes the wall behind them was not the size of the photo, so ... I did what I could. What I'm asking you is look at the photos and the text, don't try to find perfection in my photos as I did what I could.
