At The Christmas Market

No matter how shocking this may look, for me, the Christmas market is not an event I'm looking for with joy. Markets and fairs are my favorite, usually I make sure to visit as many as possible, but this one is more like a disappointment for me and I'll explain why.

At The Christmas Market.jpg

The variety of interesting and useful products is mind blowing, you see so many goodies you can hardly choose, but don't worry as when you see the prices, your dilemma goes away in a split second. Two weeks ago I wrote a post about what is going to happen and Saturday, when the biker Santas came to collect the gifts for the less fortunate kids, I had the chance to see if I was right. Of course I was.

My primary goal was to hand over the gifts, take some photos for my post and enjoy the event. Buying anything was not planned, but I said to myself, it there will be something calling my name, I'll think about it.

This was the first trap, one very hard to resist as who doesn't want Christmas candies, candy canes and all kinds of chocolate? To give you an idea about the prices, you can buy similar Christmas candies 65% cheaper in the supermarket.

Gingerbread. For those of you, who are not familiar with Christmas in Europe, let me tell you, that there's no Christmas without gingerbread. Back in the day, when my maternal grandmother used to still spend Christmas with us. she used to bake small gingerbread figures and hang them on the tree. The tradition is going on I can say, but I don't hang them on the tree as we're eating them anyway. However, not this year as I'm continuing my diet and Christmas sweets, cookies and cakes will be limited. None for me I mean.

The gingerbread you see here is not just any gingerbread. The decoration on them equals any artwork. You buy one and literally have no heart to eat it, as it's so beautiful.

This was a stall that I would be willing to spend money. There weren't many to tell you the truth as prices were sky high, but seeing those beanies, hats (whatever you want to call them), sewn and crocheted toys, so many cool products made of canvas and organic materials ... makes you want to have them.

Another cool thing that I have to share with you is the kid with the Santa hat. He arrived on his bicycle, fully decorated for Christmas and had a Santa bag with him, full of goodies, that he donated to the kids from the orphanage. He is old enough to know how the whole Santa thing work and was willing to give away what he doesn't need anymore. How cool is that? At his age! I can appreciate parents who are teaching kids to do these things. Sorry to say but in this day of age, kids grow up being rather selfish. That's the sad truth.

Enamel cups and flasks, something I always look at and never buy any. If you don't use such items, then why buy them, right? But damn, they look so nice :)

20251213_155958a.JPG

This was the place where you could buy (almost) everything for the biggest event of the year, from different decorations to different oils, to make your house smell like Christmas.

20251213_162308a.JPG

If you were short on Christmas gift ideas, this lady could help you choose plenty, I'm sure of that.

20251213_162338a.JPG

Handmade jewellery and wall decorations.

20251213_162400a.JPG

Wooden toys and chopping boards, way better and healthier than plastic ones. The good thing about these markets is that you can find them at different events and if you don't buy something you like because you're hesitant, there's always the next one.

20251213_162421a.JPG

This is the place where I take the photo and leave as far away as possible, as fast as possible. It's lavender and I can't stand the smell.

20251213_162457a.JPG

Handmade jewellery, again. How often you give or receive jewellery for Christmas?

20251213_162509a.JPG

This was another place, where I would have spent some money. Those hand painted wooden items are lovely and the funny wooden globes are always a good idea as a gift, if you want to make someone smile or even laugh. These are durable as well, not to mention environment friendly.

20251213_162524a.JPG

No, it's not my lavender business, but it looks great :)

20251213_162544a.JPG

There's no Christmas without honey. I was looking to buy a jar of rapeseed honey, as that's my favorite, but as I'm on a diet, no honey for me :(

20251213_162553a.JPG

The lady had gingerbread as well and looking at the price, these were actually at a reasonable price. There's still time to go back and buy some, but what about my diet? That's the question.

So this is it today, my market presentation ends here. Now tell me, is this market different than what you have in your country? Also, let me know, what would you buy from here?

almost identical to the markets we have here 😄 lavender, honey, hand made jewelry or crochet... i'd say here there is more food stuff, like bread, cakes, vegetables and fruits... same as your case, a lot of interesting stuff but when you see the prices any intention to buy goes away lol but it's still good for a walk or look at what there is

Wait as I haven't posted the food photos yet 😅 but it's coming 😎

Looks like the stuff sold is similar, I bet it's not just in your country and mine.

I think this is the problem of all Christmas markets, the price. There are beautiful things, endless variety but the prices make you run away!

I love the wooden things for example, the mugs, all those little things are beautiful, but it seems that at Christmas they cost more.

I liked the little boy dressed for Christmas which made all the difference.🤗

Unfortunately, price reflects not just the price of the products, but the additional costs too and you're paying more for the place and not just for the products.

It would be interesting to know how much profit they are able to make, but you can't just ask them directly as that's private.

There were some lovely things but when you think you're paying 2x, 3x what the product costs ... you think twice, if you want to buy or not. 🤗

It is true that they are handmade things and that is expensive, it is real and valid but it is true that the place makes things more expensive. You should think about whether it is really worth it.

Knowing these vendors are present at most of the fairs, you can make a smarter decision by buying at a different fair, or contacting them at home and buy there. They are open to suggestions, good solutions. I spoke to a few and told me they can even deliver orders. So you need to be smart.

Surely in other fairs... the products are cheaper, wait and be patient!

I've got the same feelings over here, too. In fact, it's been a month already since the Christmas Market opened in town, and I still haven't visited it. Zero enthusiasm or interest, really.

It seems like the only one making profit here is the municipality, for renting out those spaces. My brother told me, the people selling lángos & kürtös paid 17,000€ for the place for 30 days. This doesn't include electricity, gas and water.

Beautiful photos of those Christmas kiosks 😀, but I almost burst out laughing reading what you wrote! For a moment it was almost like reading something I had written myself! 😂 I won't go into details, but here in my country, that kind of price gouging also happens at themed markets, and not just Christmas markets, but also markets for crafts and art, or even at something they used to celebrate in my town called "The Corn Fair"—everything was much more expensive! But there were so many lovely things! Well, lately the economy of our municipality has been very weak, so we have fewer and fewer of those kinds of events... But, as always, I loved seeing your photos and reading your always interesting post, dear friend! I would buy gingerbread there, even if it were expensive! 😀🙏

What was so funny? I'd like to know 😂😜I'm glad though, especially when I read it resembles to something you'd write yourself.

Without pretending I'm an expert in life in your country, I know quite a lot just by reading posts on Hive and can imagine how difficult it is and mot likely everyone grabs every occasion to make an extra buck.

we have fewer and fewer of those kinds of events...

I can say the exact opposite here. There are so many events you can't even imagine and what is even better, they are trying to keep tradition going, to bring back old habits and what is even mote important, there are so many activities for kids, to give them an occasion to try things out.

Thanks for stopping by and sorry for the late reply.

Have a nice weekend my dear friend!

😂 Awwww, dear @erikah friend, ever since I joined #Hive, I've enjoyed reading your posts and the way you express your thoughts. I always feel a strong connection to your opinions and how you express yourself... I don't know how things are going for you there, but here some people tell me, "You're excessively honest and unconventional" 😂 and I reply, "We always need people like that!"😂... I'm sending you a big hug and wishing you stilll having a wonderful December, and thank you so much for always being on #Hive. What you do here is truly wonderful!...

And yes, making a little money here in my country is difficult 😐, and we always have to seize every opportunity. At least, that's how it is for ordinary people without connections to the ruling elite 🤷‍♂. But we do our best, and we've learned to always help each other 😀🙏...

👋

What a coincidence 😆

This week I had a chat with one of my friends here on Hive and he told me:

You don't play and are direct. Straight up you say bullshit

To which I said:

why waste time?

The truth is, life teaches you to not waste time with bullshit, just get to the point and most of all, be honest.

Actually, there's a post coming up, that you're going to laugh about 😂, but I feel like I need to write it.

Thank you so much for always being you and the way you conduct yourself here. I really appreciate it. Big hug to you too :)

Greetings
Those photos of the handmade crafts are beautiful. The story about the boy on the bicycle donating gifts was a cool representation of the season spirit.
Thank you

Your photos are absolutely stunning, Erika! It's tough to resist those unique pieces! But delivering gifts for the kids must have felt so rewarding. Thanks for sharing 🎄❤️

Thank you @trexdon, I'm glad you liked them. You're right, what counts is to help those poor kids who have no one to rely on. At least they have one good day to enjoy.

I also sponsor a child through a charity program, contributing a small amount every month to support an orphan I've never met. Even though we've never seen each other, it makes me really happy knowing that a portion of my money is automatically deducted each month and going toward something truly meaningful 🥰

That is a really lovely thing to do. I wish there were more people willing to help.
