Eleven Steps to Becoming a Witch
It's my eleven-year anniversary.
Happy anniversary, me.
Eleven years ago I voided my apartment of all unessential items. I packed two dogs, two cats, paints, clothing, instruments, and a few boxes of sentimentals into a 1997 Plymouth Voyager on its third transmission and drove all the way from San Diego, California to Portland, Oregon in one shot. At 4am on November 8th, 2012, I laid out a blanket on the floor of my new one bedroom apartment and fell asleep in a pile of snoring fur.
Eleven years ago I had this urge to move to the Pacific Northwest and become a witch. I didn't know what that meant, and I didn't have any delusional plans that involved magic wands, levitation, or licking toads. It was a deeper knowing, the kind of knowing without knowing and trusting the unknown, which pretty much meant not knowing wtf I was doing but doing it anyway.
I couldn't tell you the magic formula. There's not gonna be a book called Eleven Steps to Becoming a Witch. I still don't know what a witch truly is. What I do know is I live in this wicked beautiful sylvan paradise where I commune with crows, go on long quests into the wilderness, and heal people with my hands.
Sounds about right.
Sounds about witch.
Oh. And I can fly, too.

Any idea why "witch" seems to be the new trendy term for "independent woman?"
It's not new. Independent women used to be burned at the stake is all. We're reclaiming it.
Like Queer.
In north america, witches tended to be hanged. And the accused were more often the eccentric or downright disliked members of society, or people who earned the ire of the social "elite." Folk magic was often overlooked. Witch trials often arose as a desire to find scapegoats. Source: Our Fake History podcast episodes 187, 188, & 189 along with various other historical readings. It seems there's a fictional "witch" idea divorced from history driving this identity movement. [/mansplaining]
Ooooooo, interesting!!! I will check that out some time ahead of now, which is past my bedtime.
🤣
I can talk about what a witch really is! You are a brave soul, take your pick and pack and go to the unexplored place. You have confidence in yourself. You are a psychonaut. You live in nature, you absorb the DNA of life. So you are already a witch and have been since you were born.
I love this!!! Such a fantastic description.
Driven by a need, conquered through persistence, interesting to get away on a whim, finding your way as you go!
Amazing scenery with friendly clever crows to converse with.
Thank you!
And yes, me and the crows have some deep conversations even though I can't often tell what we are talking about.
Often contemplate whether they know more than they let on....
They probably do. I mean, almost everywhere that humans live, crows live, too.
We don't have too many in our region, they do let you know when they go through.
Perhaps your region is much better with containing garbage than many places!
Doubt it, the monkeys rip open everything! I simply don't think the birds come this way too often.
Ohhhh you live in monkey town, that does make a lot of sense! Sounds like they already fill the role of opportunist that crow would otherwise take.
Very much money town, crows fly straight down to the beach, we along their 'freeway.'
Oh maaaah gaaawwwwd what kind of a monkey is that??? I'm having such monkey envy right now.
This is our Vervet monkey, they go through the garden once or twice daily. Cute to see but can become a menace when too many breeding as is happening of late.
Oh, I bet! Monkeys are stronger than they look. And have no qualms about using their teeth.
They are a menace to bird life, I get close to them, never that close to make them feel uncomfortable. They will bite and attack pets when finding themselves in a bad situation.
Still have monkey envy!
But a little less now...
They are darn cute, how could anyone be angry with them for long....
Levitation sounds pretty cool, though. Just sayin ;)
All jokes aside, this is beautiful. Happy anniversary to you. May you wander the forest a long time to come <3
Thank you, @honeydue!!! 🖤🖤🖤
I'd be totally down with levitation if it did happen...
Just wanted to point out the flying..:)
...it sounds great, the crows, the walks, and the followed intuition, happy anniversary💜
Thanks!!!!
The flying is awesome. This time of year everyone is trying to fly, though, and it's a bit crowded.
😁😁...even better!! 🐦⬛
