Me + Tennis = Injury... my training diary entry from June 6 2026

(This is what the terrain looked like as we began the final ascent towards the Wendelsteinhaus.)
Hi Actifitters,
it happened! I injured myself! Yesterday, I stepped onto the tennis court for the first time in about three years and immediately got injured. It was the first short ball I tried to chase down. Right as I burst into a sprint, a sharp pain shot through the area between my glutes and the back of my thigh. At this point, we haven't even played for 15 minutes. It was immediately clear to me that the injury was not a torn muscle fiber or a strain.
Smart as I am, I didn't stop playing. After all, I could still hit balls, I just couldn't run for them anymore. Walking still felt ok. So I kept playing for around 90 minutes.
Afterwards, we went to the beer garden for a bite to eat, followed by a walk with an ice cream sundae to round off the outing.
Over time, I found it increasingly difficult to move, and it also became significantly more uncomfortable and painful. It probably would have been a good idea to go straight home. Once I was home, I lay in a warm bath for half an hour.
The warmth felt good. However, getting out of the bathtub wasn't all that easy. After all, standing up, lying down, or sitting down is the most painful part of the whole process.
When I finally found a reasonably comfortable position on the sofa, I consulted Dr. Google. I had a few "aha" moments in the process. For quite some time, I had felt a sort of blockage in the affected area - something that often became apparent when stretching. Now, I think it’s quite likely related to my sciatic nerve. I’m curious to see what my orthopedist has to say about the whole thing.
Keep your fingers crossed that I can get an appointment for tomorrow. That’s not so easy in Germany these days if you don’t have private health insurance.
Since normal walking doesn't hurt and I've read that it's actually good for maintaining normal muscle tone, I'll see how far I can get with my steps. Otherwise, exercise is out of the question.

Getting injured while playing is not a good experience
How strange, it’s supposed that with beer everything would be sorted, and then ice cream would be like the seal of quality… (joking). I hope you recover soon. And that you find an appointment so you can get the right treatment.
Thanks ;)
