From Monsoon Mist to Mountain Magic: A Pahalgam Memory
Last summer, around the peak of the tourist season, I had the chance to revisit one of the most breathtaking spots in Kashmir—Pahalgam. It was a trip long overdue, especially with how seldom my friends and I manage to synchronize our schedules. Everyone’s tied up with work these days, and opportunities to step away from the daily routine don’t come often. But back then, a rare three-day weekend gave us the perfect window to plan something refreshing together.
We set out on a warm Friday afternoon, leaving the familiar comfort of our village behind. The journey took roughly two hours, covering around 110 kilometers, with the landscape slowly transforming as we moved closer to the heart of the mountains. Just as we entered Pahalgam, an unexpected drizzle greeted us, giving the entire valley a fresh, vivid charm. The skies cleared up just enough to reveal the towering peaks, and the clouds hovered low as if dancing with the mountains. It was a surreal sight, unlike anything I had experienced before.
We had reserved our accommodation beforehand, so after checking in and settling our bags, we quickly stepped out to soak in the scenery. The rainfall had given the entire valley a renewed glow—the grass looked brighter, and the Lidder River gushed more energetically than usual, its flow echoing in the air as it cut through the rocks and hills. I couldn’t resist capturing a few moments, and those snapshots have stayed with me as vivid reminders of that memorable escape.
During our stay, we explored every corner we could—Aru, Betaab Valley, and the lesser-known paths that often go unnoticed. Daytime was for wandering and photography, while our nights were filled with laughter, card games, and soft music echoing through our room. It had been quite some time since all of us had spent such uninterrupted time together, and none of us wanted the nights to end.
On Sunday evening, with heavy hearts, we packed up and began the return journey. Reality awaited us back home—offices, duties, and the usual grind. Though none of us were ready to leave the calm of Pahalgam, responsibilities don’t wait. We made sure to reach home well in time to prepare for the coming work week, our minds still carrying the peace of the mountains.
Looking back now, that trip feels like a dream stitched into the fabric of last year—fleeting but unforgettable.
