For almost eighty years, the land where this place is known locally as "The Settlement" has belonged to my friend Gerardo's family. In fact, he's the current owner, having inherited it from his father, who passed away some years ago. So, when I pass by and see the old blue Toyota FJ-40 from the 1980s parked in front of the large brick structures that were once used to bake and dry tobacco leaves, the sight is like stepping back in time to my childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. Gerardo and I have been friends forever, and I grew up coming here often to spend time with him and his family, who are like family to me, as we share years of friendship, as I mentioned.

Desde hace casi ochenta años atrás las actuales tierras de este lugar a el que simplemente llaman aquí "El Asentamiento", han pertenecido a la familia de mi amigo Gerardo, y de hecho, el es el actual dueño del lugar, puesto que lo heredó de su padre fallecido hace ya algunos años atrás. Así que, cuando paso cerca de ese lugar y observo el viejo vehículo Toyota FJ-40 Azul de los años 80, estacionado en frente de las grandes estructuras de ladrillo, las cuales años atrás eran utilizadas para hornear las hojas de tabaco y secarlas; para mi toda es visión es como "volver en el tiempo" a mis años de niñez, adolescencia y juventud. Pues Gerardo y yo hemos sido amigos desde siempre y yo mismo crecí viniendo a este lugar con mucha frecuencia a compartir con mi amigo Gerardo y toda su familia la cual en parte es también como mi familia, pues nos unen años de amistad como ya lo dije...

Whenever I can, I come to this place and stop by to say hello to my friend Gerardo, who we call "My Compadre" here, since I'm the godfather of his youngest daughter. We also went to high school together and were inseparable party buddies during our youth. And although my friend doesn't like being photographed (he might even punch me if I tried to take a picture of him from the front 😂), I always manage to snap a photo of him without him noticing (in this post, by the way, he's wearing a gray & black sweater while supervising a field and moving an irrigation hose towards it 😂)... But the truth is, besides just saying hello, I always come here to walk around a bit and take some photos, because even though I come frequently, there's always something new to share photographically...

Siempre que puedo entro a este lugar y paso a saludar a mi amigo Gerardo, quien además es lo que aquí llamamos "Mi Compadre" pues yo soy padrino de bautismo de su hija menor, además estudiamos juntos en secundaria y fuimos compañeros de farra inseparables durante nuestra juventud. Y aunque a mi amigo no le gusta ser fotografiado (en realidad podría incluso darme un puñetazo si se me ocurre hacerle un retrato de frente 😂) siempre acostumbro a hacerle alguna fotografía sin que él se percate (en este post por cierto, aparece con un suéter negro y gris mientras supervisa un sembradío y mueve una manguera de riego hacia el lugar 😂)... Pero lo cierto es que, además de pasara a saludar, siempre vengo aquí a caminar un poco y a hacer algunas fotos, pues a pesar de venir con frecuencia, en este lugar siempre hay algo nuevo para compartir fotográficamente hablando...

Since my friend's father died, they no longer plant tobacco on the plantation, as my friend (unlike his father) is completely opposed to smoking. Furthermore, tobacco cultivation is becoming increasingly unprofitable due to its high planting and harvesting costs. As a result, the plantation has diversified its crops, and it's now common to see areas planted with cucumbers, corn, beans, cilantro, and even fruit trees like passion fruit and bananas. In addition, the higher, drier parts of the land are used to raise cattle and occasionally sheep. All of this makes the place look even more interesting than in previous years...

Desde la muerte del padre de mi amigo, en la plantación ya no se siembra más plantas de tabaco, pues mi amigo (a diferencia de su padre) es totalmente contrario al habito de fumar. Además, ese cultivo (tabaco) cada vez tiene menor rango de beneficio dados sus altos costos de siembra y cosecha. Todo esto ha traído como consecuencia que los cultivos se han diversificado en la plantación y ahora es común ver áreas de tierra sembradas de pepinos, maíz, frijoles, cilantro e incluso frutales como la parcha real y bananos. Además, las partes altas y más secas del terreno se han destinado a criar algunas vacas y ocasionalmente ovejos. Todo esto hace que el lugar luzca incluso más interesante que en años anteriores...

My friend's eldest son has inherited the family's passion for working the land, so he's usually helping with the planting and harvesting. This is a source of joy for my friend, who hopes the property will remain in his family's hands for many more years. Two of my friend's sisters and some nephews live on the property and also depend on it financially, so there's always enough labor available. They also hire people from nearby hamlets when needed.

El joven hijo mayor de mi amigo ha heredado la pasión familiar por el trabajo en el campo, así que usualmente está también ayudando en las labores de siembra y cosecha. Esto es un motivo de alegría para mi amigo, quien pretende que la propiedad siga por muchos años más en manos de su familia. Dentro de la propiedad viven dos de las hermanas de mi amigo y algunos sobrinos, quienes también dependen económicamente del lugar, así que siempre hay "mano de obra" suficiente y además se contratan personas de caseríos cercanos cuando en necesario...
