Over the years I have learned to “read the weather in my town” and today at 4:00 AM when I woke up and peeked my head out of my bedroom window, I immediately realized that this would be a good morning for street photography, as there was a light mist on the streets but the air felt static and slightly warm, which here is a typical harbinger of a cloudy dawn but without rains... And so I ended up heading for the streets right after feeding my pets and leaving coffee ready for my wife and daughter who were still sleeping... I took my old 100mm fixed lens (a macro and portrait lens, which I also use for street photography when I want to use wide apertures and take advantage of the low light in the morning)... I wandered the streets freely as usual, until I reached an area east of town where my friend Elio's blacksmith shop is located, known by many as “Elio the Blacksmith” or also “Elio the Vespa”, the first nickname for the occupation he does obviously, and the second nickname because years ago he had several “Vespa” brand scooters 🛵... And that is the context of this little story which I share with you today on #Hive... I invite you then to continue on this post and enjoy my passage today in the blacksmith shop of my friend Elio... 😃📷

Con el paso de los años he aprendido a "leer el clima en mi pueblo" y hoy a las 4:00 AM cuando desperté y asome mi cabeza por la ventana de mi habitación, me percaté de inmediato de que esta sería una buena mañana para hacer fotografías callejeras, pues había un ligera niebla en las calles pero el aire se sentía estático y ligeramente templado, lo cual aquí es típico presagio de un amanecer nublado pero sin lluvias... Y así fue como terminé yendo hacia las calles justo después de dar de comer a mis mascotas y dejar café preparado para mi esposa y mi hija quienes aún dormían... Llevé en mi cámara mi viejo lente fijo de 100 mm (un objetivo para macros y retratos, el cual también uso para fotos callejeras cuando quiero usar aperturas amplias y aprovechar la poca luz matutina)... Deambulé por las calles libremente como siempre, hasta llegar aun área al este del pueblo en donde está el taller de herrería de mi amigo Elio, conocido por muchos como "Elio el Herrero" o también "Elio el Vespa", el primer apodo por el oficio que hace obviamente, y el segundo apodo porque años atrás tenía varias motos scooter de marca "Vespa"🛵... Y ese es el contexto de esta pequeña historia la cual comparto hoy con ustedes en #Hive... Les invito entonces a continuar en este post y disfrutar de mi paso de hoy por la herrería de mi amigo Elio... 😃📷

My friend's blacksmith shop is located in one of the newest areas of town and also one of the most visually chaotic (📷 01)... I noticed Elio's presence at his work site while still about 50 meters away, so I took a couple of pictures of Elio preparing some of his tools while sitting on one of the many iron stuff he always has in the street (📷 02 and 03)... Once Elio noticed my presence, he looked at me thoughtfully and said: "Go inside, I need you to take a picture of me with a sign! 😂... That's how Elio is, he rarely says hello or goodbye, he always talks as if one had been all the time there beside him!.... But I felt lucky, because the inside of the place looks like anything but a blacksmith shop and there are quite a few interesting things to photograph. Elio is also a musician with a strong devotion to Bob Marley and everything that has to do with the Reggae music genre...

La herrería de mi amigo está ubicada en una de las áreas más nuevas del pueblo y también una de las más visualmente caóticas (📷 01)... Me percaté de la presencia de Elio en su sitio de trabajo estando aún a unos 50 metros de distancia, entonces hice un par de fotos de Elio preparando parte de sus herramientas mientras estaba sentado en uno de los tantos fierros que él tiene siempre la calle (📷 02 y 03)... Una vez Elio se percató de mi presencia, me observó pensativo y me dijo: "¡Ve hacia dentro, necesito que me hagas una foto con un letrero! 😂... ¡Así es Elio, rara vez saluda o se despide, siempre habla como si uno hubiese estado en todo momento allí junto a él!... Pero me sentí afortunado, pues el interior del lugar parece cualquier cosa menos una herrería y hay bastantes cosas interesantes para fotografiar. Elio además es músico y con una marcada devoción por Bob Marley y todo lo que tiene que ver con el genero musical Reggae...

As I said, the place is a paradise for taking pictures, especially if you are thinking about processing them in black and white... As soon as I enter I see the painting with Bob Marley's face (Elio also paints in oil) and that strange ugly mirror (📷 04) underneath the painting in which Elio says one can see Marley's face 😕 when his music plays in this place... Elio walks past me grumbling (📷 05) and I say, “I'm wanting to see Marley's face in the mirror” and Elio replies, “You'll have to smoke a lot of weed to see it, plus sing reggae!” 😂😂😂... I couldn't avoid laughing my head off thanks to his comment as Elio entered behind a thick curtain and then returned with a metal sign in his hands....

Lo dicho, el lugar es un paraíso para hacer fotos, en especial si se piensa procesarlas en blanco y negro... Apenas entro veo la pintura con el rostro de Bob Marley (Elio también pinta al oleo) y ese extraño y feo espejo (📷 04) que está debajo en el cual Elio dice que uno puede ver el rostro de Marley 😕 cuando suena su música en este lugar... Elio pasa a mi lado refunfuñando (📷 05) y yo le digo: "Estoy queriendo ver el rostro de Marley en el espejo" y Elio me contesta: "¡Tendrás que fumar mucha hierba para poder verlo, además de cantar reggae! 😂😂😂... No pude evitar desternillarme de risas gracias a su comentario mientras Elio entraba tras una gruesa cortina y luego regresaba con un letrero metálico en sus manos...

The sign my friend was talking about was a Jamaican flag made of sheet metal. As a good reggae and Bob Marley fan, Elio loves Jamaica and has visited it a couple of times in the past, as far as I know... The first portrait was of Elio holding the sign while his face was ridiculously expressionless (📷 07) 😂 so I yelled at him: Come on man, smile, tomorrow will be Friday! 😂 (on Fridays Elio and his friends practice their music here).... So Elio ended up showing a “dubiously good smile” (📷 08) 😀 and I gave him a better portrait... Although then he lowered his arms and continued grumbling (📷 09) and saying he “hates smiling without a reason” 😂... That's how Elio is some times!....

El cartel del cual hablaba mi amigo era una bandera de Jamaica hecha en lámina de metal. Como buen fanático del reggae y de Bob Marley, A Elio le encanta Jamaica y la ha visitado un par de veces según sé... El primer retrato fue de Elio sosteniendo el letrero mientras su rostro estaba ridículamente inexpresivo (📷 07) 😂 así que le grité: ¡Vamos hombre, sonríé, mañana será viernes! 😂 (los viernes Elio y sus amigos ensayan su música en este lugar)... Así que Elio terminó por mostrar una "dudosamente buena sonrisa" (📷 08) 😀 y le hice un mejor retrato...Aunque luego bajó los brazos y continuó refunfuñando (📷 09) y diciendo que "odia sonreír sin un motivo" 😂... ¡Así es Elio algunas veces!...

Talking a little about Elio: He arrived in Montalbán in the early 80's and stayed here forever, he started his business as a blacksmith (a profession he didn't know at the time) and has become one of the best in the region. He is not only a blacksmith, he is also a sculptor, painter (as I said before), farmer, motorcycle mechanic, environmentalist and a person with a very high human quality, until the point where it is not uncommon to see him helping people in need by providing them with food, clothes, medicine or even repairing their houses in times of rain. In addition, Elio is one of the few people not born in our town officially recognized by the municipal government as “Illustrious Citizen and Character of the town”... In spite of his casual and carefree appearance, everyone here loves Elio very much and I don't think there is anyone in the municipality who doesn't know him...

Hablando un poco acerca de Elio: Llegó a Montalbán a principios de los 80 y se quedó aquí para siempre, comenzó su emprendimiento como herrero (oficio el cual desconocía entonces) y se ha convertido en uno de los mejores de la región. No solo es herrero, también es escultor, pintor (como dije antes), agricultor, mecánico de motocicletas, ambientalista y una persona con una altísima calidad humana, hasta el punto en el que no es raro verle ayudando a personas necesitadas proveyéndoles comida, ropa, medicinas o incluso reparando sus casas en tiempos de lluvias. Además Elio es una de las pocas personas de nuestro pueblo reconocido oficialmente por el gobierno municipal como "Ciudadano ilustre y Personaje del pueblo"... A pesar de su aspecto desenfadado y casual, aquí todas las personas quieren mucho a Elio y no creo que haya nadie en el municipio que no le conozca...

Elio kept grumbling as he always does 🤷‍♂, and after telling me: “Put my portrait on all your networks, I want my friends in Jamaica see it” he mounted his motorcycle and rode down the street, leaving me there in his blacksmith shop where I took the opportunity to take some more pictures (📷 10, 11, 12 and 13) and feeling very happy to have this new anecdote of my town to share with you in #Hive!...

Elio siguió refunfuñando como siempre lo hace 🤷‍♂, y luego de decirme: "Pon mi retrato en todas tus redes, quiero que mis amigos de Jamaica lo vean" montó en su motocicleta y se fue calle abajo, dejándome allí en su herrería donde aproveché de hacer algunas fotografías más (📷 10, 11, 12 y 13) y sintiéndome muy contento de tener esta nueva anécdota de mi pueblo para compartir con ustedes en #Hive!...
