Paris seen from the Arc de Triomphe (Part 1)

I had already visited the Arc de Triomphe, but it had been so long that my memories were pretty hazy. I really wanted to go back and experience it again.

So I arrived fairly early at the underground passage leading to the monument. Good surprise: no waiting line! That’s pretty rare in Paris, especially with all the tourists around. Everything was going smoothly… until the security check. Access was suddenly stopped at the metal detector. After several minutes of waiting, we were told that someone had fainted on the stairs leading up to the platform.

The result: 1 hour and 15 minutes of standing around with no access to restrooms, which were inaccessible. Not ideal. But as I often say: when it starts badly… it ends well. And indeed, my patience was well rewarded by the stunning view from the top of this monument, originally built in memory of the Grande Armée and later dedicated to the glory of the French armed forces.

J’avais déjà visité l’Arc de Triomphe, mais ça remontait à tellement longtemps que mes souvenirs étaient flous. J’avais vraiment envie d’y retourner, de revivre l’expérience.

Je suis donc arrivé assez tôt au passage souterrain qui mène au monument. Bonne surprise : aucune file d’attente ! Plutôt rare à Paris, surtout avec la foule de touristes qu’on y croise. Tout s’annonçait parfait… jusqu’au contrôle de sécurité. L’accès a été bloqué net au niveau du détecteur de métaux. Après plusieurs minutes d’attente, on nous a annoncé qu’une personne avait fait un malaise dans l’escalier menant à la plateforme.

Résultat : 1h15 à piétiner, sans possibilité d’aller aux toilettes, qui étaient inaccessibles. Pas idéal. Mais comme je dis souvent : quand ça commence mal… ça finit bien. Et effectivement, ma patience a été largement récompensée par la vue imprenable depuis le sommet de cet édifice, construit à la mémoire de la Grande Armée, puis dédié à la gloire des armées françaises.
