Fontevraud: a journey through time (Part 2)
In 1101, Robert of Arbrissel founded the Abbey of Fontevraud, a place designed to host a mixed community of both women and men — something rare at the time.
A visionary, he established from the start a unique way of life based on sharing, prayer, and mutual respect between the sexes. But what struck me the most is the decision he made before his death: putting this dual community under the authority of a woman, an abbess.
A bold and powerful move — especially for that era — that challenged the established hierarchies of the Middle Ages. I think it’s fair to say that Robert of Arbrissel was ahead of his time, particularly when it comes to recognizing the role of women in religious life.
C’est en 1101 que Robert d’Arbrissel a fondé l’abbaye de Fontevraud, un lieu destiné à accueillir une communauté mixte, composée à la fois de femmes et d’hommes — une rareté à l’époque.
Visionnaire, il a instauré dès le départ, un mode de vie original, fondé sur le partage, la prière et le respect mutuel entre les sexes. Mais ce qui m'a frappé surtout, c’est le choix qu’il fait à sa mort : placer cette communauté double sous l’autorité d’une femme, une abbesse.
Un geste fort et audacieux (surtout pour l'époque), qui remet en question les hiérarchies établies du Moyen Âge. Je crois que l'on peut dire que ce Robert d’Arbrissel était en avance sur son temps, particulièrement en ce qui concerne la reconnaissance du rôle des femmes dans la sphère religieuse.
