Beer Saturday: tasting two African beers

avatar
(Edited)

Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!

Since I quit my regular Saturday upvote giveaway series, I have more time to post about what I want on this day and after some time again, I´m happy to come with a contribution to one of the oldest and most popular regular initiatives on Hive and that´s the Beer Saturday run by @detlev.

It may actually seem a bit weird that I post about beer so rarely, considering that I come from the Czech Republic aka "the beer capital of the world" and a country that holds a number of beer related primacies such as the world´s largest beer consumption per capita, the world´s largest number of breweries per capita, having some of the oldest and most popular beers in the world etc.

Moreover, just like a vast majority of my Czech fellows, I´m a big fan of beer indeed and I drink this iconic beverage, well, let´s say quite often :D But the thing is that unlike many of my Czech fellows, I´m not a beer gourmet :) My friends often make fun of me for not having a beer taste and thus liking all beers equally and they are actually kind of right :D When it comes to beer, I´m definitely not picky. That might be good for me as I can easily enjoy even beers that many others wouldn´t but on the other hand, that´s probably the reason why I cannot really write about beer very often as the reviews would all be very similar and boring :D

So why am I writing about beer this time? Well, because I recently tried some beers that I´m pretty sure many people from the Beer community of Hive haven´t tasted yet! As those who check out my blog regularly know, I recently visited Zanzibar, an amazing archipelago that is a part of the East African country called Tanzania. During our time on Zanzibar, I got to try two local beers. Actually, to be 100% correct, I should say African beers because just one those two was from Tanzania and the other one was from the Republic of South Africa.

Let´s start with the Tanzanian one. It´s called Kilimanjaro and it looks like this.

IMG_20221223_144808.jpg

Now as I already mentioned, I don´t do these elaborate beer reviews where people describe the taste of the beer in several long paragraphs. All I can say about Kilimanjaro is that it was not bad :D But as I just said, I usually like my beer, no matter what brand it is, so the "not bad" review coming from me actually means that most beer fans wouldn´t probably like it at all :D The label said the beer had 4.5% of alcohol but it actually felt like much less. It was quite watery and I couldn´t feel any significant taste or flavor in it. But like always on Zanzibar, the weather was super hot that day so I just chugged it and thought: "Hmm, not really good but not so bad either".

The other beer that I tried on Zanzibar was Savanna Dry. Here is my picture of it. Pretty cool composition, isn´t it? ;)

IMG_20221227_171312.jpg

This beer was really good. I mean by my standards. That means that even some real beer gourmets might actually like it while some others probably not. Savanna Dry contains 6% of alcohol and it does feel like that. The taste was really full with some nice fruit notes. The place where I got this beer looked amazing too. It was at this lovely little restaurant at the end of the wooden pier :)

We ordered some cocktails too. It was our last night before going home. Sweet memories :)

IMG_20221227_171429.jpg

So yeah, that was my little contribution to the Beer Saturday. Hope you enjoyed it :) Maybe I should also mention the prices of the beers. As far as I remember, Kilimanjaro was some 3 USD but I had that beer at a pretty expensive beach bar, I guess it can be cheaper at some other places. Not really sure about the price of Savanna but I think it was something like 5 USD. In my country, beer is still super cheap (you can get a decent beer in the supermarket here for as little as 0.50 USD) but I know that beer is much more expensive almost everywhere in the world so I was not really surprised about the prices.

So that´s it I guess. Thanks for your attention guys and thanks @detlev for running this legendary beer series. It was a pleasure to come up with a post for your community and I hope to make some more soon. As one of my beer loving friends says: "Beer you soon!" :)

Right :) Here in my country though, we really have a special relation with this beverage as most people here drink beer every day :D It´s funny how many nations think that they are the biggest beer drinkers in the world, you know, the British, the Germans, the Americans... But in fact, we have been dominating this "discipline" for decades :D :/

I can imagine you chugging that beer and thinking that it is refreshing and cooling and not caring too much about the quality on a steaming hot day. I am happy that the SA beer was better though and what a location to enjoy it. That alone would make the beer taste better.😀.

Heh, that´s pretty much exactly how I felt about it :D You are from South Africa? Cause you seem to be cheering for that Savanna :D

Thanks buddy! You know, when you are sitting on a beach in Africa, just a few degrees of the equator, anything cold feels refreshing :D But yeah, that Savanna was good ;) Almost like an average Czech beer :D

Almost 500 craft breweries here plus the big ones like Pilsner or Budvar of course. Not bad for a country that is home to just some 10 million people :D Who can blame us for being the" world beer drinking champions" (sounds a bit better than "world biggest alcoholics"), right? :D

I thought Poland was the world's place for beer because we drink too much of it here hahaha. I even have to confess that I drank more beer here than I drank in my whole life in Venezuela haha. The photo with the Savanna beer looks spectacular and the prices of the beers sound more expensive. Greetings!

Whatever its price is, the heart of a person buys it, drinks it and enjoys it and forgets the sorrows of life. Enjoy your day.

Thank you my friend! :) Actually, I tried uploading these pictures on ShutterStock and to my surprise, they got accepted (most of my photos got rejected by them lately because of insufficient quality) so it´s possible that they will show up in some advertisement :D

Thanks for your support and curation! Cheers!

Vážím si toho, ale nemusíš to dělat, žádný payout z toho stejně není a akorát si snižuješ voting power ;) Nějaký vlastní post náhodou neplánuješ? :)

Wow, ten campervan zní skvěle! To moc držím palce, ať ho zprovozníte co nejdřív a můžete vyrazit :) A vsadím se, že za chvíli vám bude Irsko malé a začne regulérní Eurotrip :D No a když budete mít ten van ještě Hive-themed, tak to bude teprv paráda! :D

Well, I´m glad you enjoyed your beer no matter what brand are they hahaha, I didn´t know that the Czech republic is the beer country, wow! I thought it was Germany or the United States hahaha, in venezuela beer is very popular, too, very popular hahaha, people love to buy boxes of beer when they go to the beach, I personally don´t like beer, I have never try, it has a smell that disgustes me hahaha. Now I know that I can send you a box of Venezuelan beer hehehe

So how can you know whether you like beer or not if you haven´t tried it yet? :)

I just looked at the official ranking:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_beer_consumption_per_capita

...and Venezuela is not mentioned there but when I googled "beer consumption in Venezuela", I found this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_in_Venezuela

...which suggests that the consumption of beer in your country is probably somewhere around 100 litres per capita per year, which would put you very high in that ranking indeed, wow! :) We all are learning new things thanks to Hive every day, aren´t we? :)

Hahaha, well, I´m like animals, if I don´t like how it smells I don´t eat or drink it ;-)
Really? hahaha, I thought Venezuela was between those countries, and I can see in that list that Germany is number 4 and the United States number 20, that´s weird hahaha.
Now, if you check the whisky lista, Venezuela is number 12, but for many years Venezuela was every year in the first place of the whisky consumption per capita.
Yeah, we learn a lot of things, that´s good, learn new things is always good ;-)

Interesting, I didn´t know that whiskey was so popular in your country :) Here, when it comes to liquors, people prefer homemade stuff made from plums, apricots, pears and other local fruits (but make no mistake, these drinks are very strong, usually between 50% and 60% of alcohol :D) and many also like vodka :D But we drink wine too. I think this picture explains everything:

Like I said in a comment below, just a nation of alcoholics :D :/

😂😂😂😂😂🤣 a nation of alcoholics? 😳😳 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭 I can see it 🤣
Yes, whiskey is very popular here, although since the economic crisis started and things turned so expensive the consumption of whiskey dropped a lot but don't worry, this is also a country of alcoholics hahaha and since they couldn't buy whiskey they began to drink cocuy a local drink made from a plant called agave, very strong and smells horrible 😬 hahaha, now economy is improving so on weekends people buy beers, rum, vodka, cocuy, whiskey, anise, etc etc etc 🥴🤣😂🤣🤷🏻‍♀️
I really don't like alcohol, I have try mojito, ouzo, rum, ponche crema and some other cocktail but I would like to try absinthe hehehe, I did a very long post about that drink (I loved doing that post, I learned so much) and there's so much mistery around her that I want to find out by myself 🤭🤭🤭 have you ever drink absinthe?

Good to know that we are not the only "alcoholic nation" in the world :D Glad to hear the economical situation is getting better in your country and that people can buy more than before ;)

Absinthe? Yeah, sure, we used to drink it at discos when we were kids, I mean teenagers :D It´s nothing special here :)
