Street Cat Photography from Pokhara, Nepal. Three Cat Stories about Pure Love, Wisdom, and Reproduction

I already posted images of an amazing cat from Pokhara (along with her tabby admirer). This kitty:
Since then, I have met more cats on the streets of Pokhara, and it's time to show them to the audience here (as well as on Reddit in my street cat photography community).
Love
Tabbies with slight orange shades dominate in Pokhara. So meeting a graybie was surprising and joyful.
The kitty didn't get scared of me, was confident, and obviously was on his way to adventures in the nearby corn field, and, despite my attempts to attract, he didn't want to change his plan, showing purposefulness developed beyond his years.
Soon he jumped down into the sea of greenery and dived into the world of scents and bitter herbal tastes.
And I continued watching him until he disappeared in the corn thickets.
2-3 weeks later, I spotted him a couple of times on my way to a grocery shop and back to the guesthouse; however, each time I had no camera with me. Recently, I saw him again through a gap in the yard gates. Soon, I noticed a man in the yard, to whom I explained I wanted to photograph his amazing pet... And the man couldn't help boasting with his gray treasure:
Look how the graybie is obeying his human and, at the same time, how calm he is... He has a great family, this graybie!
And look at the man's face...
We really underestimate the connection between humans and pets - this type of love is maybe the purest on Earth. Zero social coercion, zero pragmatic calculations, just pure joy of living next to another living being.
Wisdom
A bulky camera is sometimes an annoying thing. You have it with you and you don't see any cats on your way; then you leave it at home, you meet cats... 😡 But in this story it was slightly different.
I decided to have a walk in the area where cats live and mounted a bulk telephoto lens on my camera. And I didn't meet cats, lol. I went to a shop to buy groceries, bought a ton of veggies, eggs, 2 bottles of water.... and I was coming back with hands holding bags, and then I noticed her:
😡 I was just mad with this shit - I see this cat only when I am loaded as a camel, and my camera is in the backpack, buried under 2 kg of tomatoes and eggs (slightly exaggerated, lol!) I dropped my bags on the road and started quickly getting prepared, hoping the kitty wouldn't leave too soon.
And here we are:
Yes, these are South Asian kitties - graceful and elongated - quite a common type of body.
She was calm with every cell of her body feeling safe on the roof, enjoying the vibes of the beautiful evening, while a dumb inferior creature 🐕 was hysterically barking because he was thinking a human with a bulky camera was a threat.... Or more precisely to say the doggy wanted to prove to his owners that he was useful and saving them, while actually he dared to be aggressive against the human (me) only because the owners were near, and he felt safe... Doggies are so doggies, noisy, silly sycophants. And that's what cats are:
I left this beautiful kitty only because the barking was annoying for everyone else in the neighborhood, and the dog was silent only when her owner was holding him and whispering something, probably, "it's fine, it's fine, my baby, it's fine."
Reproduction
That was what I spotted: a male was following a female kitty.
He was either following her like a shadow or galloping in her footsteps. And when she stopped, he also stopped and was watching her.
When I appeared on the stage, the female approached me as if she was confused by Romeo's behavior, and wanted to escape his insanity in the hands of a human. A passer-by noticed us and joined:
The bride thus was stolen by hoomans, and the reaction of Romeo was hilarious:
He was patiently waiting, looking absent-minded and even upset. I tried to pet him but he didn't want to know me and stayed fully focused on the female.
Eventually, I took the female and stretched her out to Romeo - feeling remorse for splitting the couple for so long.
And they kept playing the same game - she was walking, sort of avoiding him, and he was following her. But at some point, she recognized him as a friend, here:
She was approaching him with much trust and liking, while the tomcat was tensely watching her and was seemingly aiming to grasp her scruff. The next minute, he seemed to get scared of his own thoughts and ran away from the kitty, lol.
I hope they'll be fine. I often cross that area, and promise to share on my blog if I learn something more about the romance between these young cats. 🙂
More street cat photography from Nepal is ahead! Stay tuned, dear friend! 😎
The photos were taken with a Nikkor 70-300mm on a full-frame DSLR Nikon D750 in April-May 2026 in Sedi, Pokhara, Nepal
Hi, I like cats because they are very agile and also have 7 lives; they are very exotic animals.😀
Hi! This is an unusual reason to love cats but... it's legit too, why not. 😄
Aww haha, you really have been tracking them, that’s very entertaining. I like that graybie too, it almost looks like a snow bengal with those beautiful markings and colouring. And the owner’s face looks so peaceful. What a lucky kitty (and owner), getting so much love.
Looks like tabbies are very popular there too. Nice shots.
And a beautiful community on Reddit, r/StreetCatsOfTheWorld. It definitely makes me more aware of spotting kitties in the streets, lol. 😆
He was flattered after I praised his gray beast. That was so good to see.
They just have them from relatives and neighbors - there is no culture of buying unusual cats at stores here.
Btw, tabbies are the oldest coat pattern; they are the foundation, cats closest to the Great Cat Spirit than any other 😁 And also many of tabbies have features of cat populations that had lived in Asia before European kitties arrived on ships and mixed with the local felines. So, they are super interesting.
Yes, thank you. What is especially cool, real Reddit people joined who enjoy contributing. This niche was empty (r/notmycat is the only big one that is close but not the same) - because, as it turned out, Americans see strays and ferals as cats in trouble and normally photograph them when they are in awful conditions and need help, while people in Cetral and Eastern Europe, Turkey, Greece, as well as China, Korea, and Japan (as I know) enjoy free-roaming cats as part of life - part of urban landscape, history, and culture. I believe this difference is a reflection of a broader philosophy.
What is surprising is that the fur looks good, overall they look like house cats, very good shape... The only thing is that some are really thin, but besides that they are fine
Some good encounters you do there
Thank you!
Yes, the gray cat looks not just slim (as it is supposed to be in a hot climate) but thin. However, he doesn't behave like a hungry cat at all. Idk...
That cat is the same cats here in our hone , the stray cats . Often times I used to feed them . Everytime I open the door outside , they run towards me because they condition their mind that I give them foods .
Wow, you are a lucky one to have so many cat friends, lol.
Yes , a lot of stray cats at home and they increase in population. But few of those cats are closed to me .
😍 🙏Good heavens!... What adorable creatures cats are!... Beautiful photos!... Thank you for sharing this, it has substantially brightened my morning, my dear, talented, and "never-stopping" @x-rain friend!!!
