Istanbul, secretly run by cats?
The cats of Istanbul or Istanbul of the cats.
Walking through the streets of Istanbul, I couldn’t get around noticing the numerous amount of stray cats strolling through the streets. They occupy every corner, steps and benches you’ll find them squatting empty chairs and tables.
They are everywhere!
But hold on if you are imagining starved, sad animals abandoned in the streets, you aren’t getting the right picture!
Most of those animals are very well fed, and looked after, by essentially everyone.
Maybe by countless tourists passing by each day. Or maybe by shop owners and grandma’s in the quarters.
People are even building them little huts and feeding “stations”.
Mostly the kittens will get a lot of love and attention from people passing by.
Be careful where you sit down, there might be a cat jumping up on to your lap, asking for some cuddles!
Did you know cats are bookworms?
At first you might be surprised or you might find all of that just cute. Until you ask yourself wheather it is the humans tolerating the cats or the cats tolerating humans.
Surely you are expected to leave them sleeping on their books, doesn’t matter what. If you want to read the books, come back later when the siesta is over!
And if you want to feed some of those strollers, don’t you dare offering anything else than the best!
Anything but meat or fish is not going to be accepted.
"Just bread? Pfff..."
You want to sit down at a terrace? Sorry we are full!
How on earth could you chase them away? One glance and you are bewitched!
Suddenly they all jump up, quickly running in the same direction. What is going on?
Looking down the narrow cobblestone street you’ll understand the turn of events. An old lady is walking down the street, her head covered with a colourful headscarf showing little flowers. In her hands she’s holding a bag full of cat food. They are all following her, sweeping around her legs, while she is telling them to be patient for just one more moment.
Is it cats that are secretly running this town?
I was wondering, if there is a specific reason, why stray cats are that accepted and looked after in most parts I crossed here in Turkey. It is surely a pleasure to see well feed and happy animals strolling the streets, than skinny and sick ones, breaking your heart each time you see one and know you can't really help them. @corvidae Suggested the movie Kedi Where they say: "Cats are said to see or be aware of the presence of "God"". That could be an answer...? If you know better let me know!:)
Thank you all for passing by, have a wonderful week!

Catlightful! How interesting the way cats are treated there. I love all your photos and descriptions. I'm cat biased, so there is that.
From what I'm aware, cats are guardians of the gates of the underworld. There is a reverance towards cats in that perspective. I'm not sure if that's the situation in Istanbul. Wonderful way of being towards cats though. I noticed in the photo showing the feeding station, there's an image of what looks like a cat and a dog. I wonder if dogs are also cared for in the same manner there.
Cats always let you know you're the one being tolerated. 😂
Hmm that is interesting, I didn't know that bout the guardians of the underworld. Though I feel like it would probably be an explanation that cats are playing a role in stories/mythology/religion. I just don't know which story it is around here, giving the cats all that space and respect...
Dogs are different indeed!! In Istanbul I saw maybe three, meanwhile outside there was much more and they where still looked after a bit but not as much as cats. Most of them do have tags in the ear though, to my surprise, so there seems to be quite a thing going on around stray animals in general here..
😂😂 Indeed!!
I think there are probably multiple reasons for the cats and the way they are treated. I'm still feeling fascinated by this. Seems there's a very different attitude animals, one that I like.
😂
Yes!! It is similar actually towards humans, or at least how I experience, as someone traveling through/by, I also get feed and welcomed very warmly😁
I like that. 😂
That is very beautiful, dear @kesityu.fashion : the feeding station is a brilliant idea - I'm imagining that the public is invited to just tip some biscuits into the tray, but it keeps them all cleaner, rather than wee tubs around the place. It is very good to know that there are cities like this who comprehend the value of cats.
Yes, guardians of the underworld, as @nineclaws was saying, and cleaners of towns from vermin. Plus their karmic radiance, the amazing vibes of watching a cat stretching, relaxing, sleeping in a funny place in the middle of the street - this is like getting a warm hug, just seeing a cat do what it does naturally.
I always stop to greet cats, and to have a wee chat with them (and dogs, of course): I love living in a town where everyone knows the names of all the animals, and they all love all of us; they are so happy to get a wee stroke or a pat or a tummy rub, and go about their business. Here where I live, they do have some darker elements in regards to animals, which is very rooted in their disrespect for the feminine and for Nature and soil, but we are balancing it out with all our love for the animals, and their reciprocation 🤗
There is plenty of different feeding stations (now I am thinking I could have took some photos) some are little wooden hut built for the cats, or just a lot of plastic containers. They even have feeding stations where you put some coins and it drops cat/dog food into a bowl at the bottom...
It is, there is such a joy in watching them just being themselves!:)
I imagine, that's a wonderful way if there is animals around without necessarily being "the animal of someone". It makes it feel like just one big garden every one on two or four legs is sharing with each other...😊
YAY!!!!!
😊
OMG how far you arrived!
Damn, wow! :D
Istanbul is well known as cat inhabited, locals adore them (but you already notice that fact), bring me the last orange one on your way back! :D
Hahah, isn't it, I am surprised myself😅
I could bring you a whole bunch of adorable little cheeky cats!!🙃
Nah, just the orange one, seems like she already know how to pose :D
Quite photogenic indeed!!:)
