A few years ago, more than a decade, I went to this beautiful Caribbean island, not as a tourist but to take a film course, but as it was my first trip to this enigmatic country, I was anxious to get to know as much as I could in the free time I was going to have for the two weeks I was going to be there. The course was at the International Film and Television School (EICTV), which is located in San Antonio de los Baños, a town about 35 km from Havana.

Hace algunos años, más de una década, fui a esta hermosa isla caribeña, no como turista sino para hacer un curso de cine, pero como era mi primer viaje a este enigmático país, estaba ansiosa por conocer todo lo que pudiera en el tiempo libre que iba a tener durante las dos semanas que iba a estar allí. El curso era en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV), que se encuentra en San Antonio de los Baños, una localidad a unos 35 km de La Habana.

Classes started on a Monday, and I left Venezuela just a day before, on Sunday, plus my flight was delayed and I arrived at José Martí International Airport at almost midnight. Between getting a cab to take me to school at that time and getting there it was about 2:00 in the morning, so my first impression of the country was nocturnal, although I actually saw very little during the drive down the highway because it was dark. Obviously I slept almost nothing, when I arrived I was assigned my room in the apartments that the school has, I was told that from 7:00 am there was breakfast in the dining room and that at 8:00 I had to report to the classroom.

Las clases comenzaban un lunes, y yo salí de Venezuela justo un día antes, el domingo, además mi vuelo se retrasó y llegué al Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí casi a medianoche. Entre conseguir un taxi que me llevara a la escuela a esa hora y llegar allí se hicieron como las 2:00 de la mañana, por lo que mi primera impresión del país fue nocturna, aunque en realidad vi muy poco durante el trayecto por la carretera porque estaba oscuro. Obviamente no dormí casi nada, al llegar me asignaron mi habitación en los apartamentos que tiene la escuela, me dijeron que a partir de las 7:00 am había desayuno en el comedor y que a las 8:00 debía presentarme en el aula.

I met the other classmates, there were 12 of us in total from different countries, we were introduced to the teachers and then we were given a tour of the school facilities, which is huge, and so began my stay in Cuba. Classes were Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:00 (with a lunch break), and to explore I was only going to have two weekends off. I would have liked to stay more days on the island, but I had to get back to work.

Conocí a los demás compañeros del curso, éramos 12 en total de diferentes países, nos presentaron a los profesores y luego nos dieron un tour por las instalaciones de la escuela, que es enorme, y así comenzó mi estancia en Cuba. Las clases eran de lunes a viernes de 8:00 a 5:00 (con descanso en la hora del almuerzo), y para explorar sólo iba a tener dos fines de semana libres. Me habría gustado quedarme más días en la isla, pero debía volver a mi trabajo.

Well, the classes started quite intense from the first day, lots of interesting content to understand and process, and when I thought I would have to wait for Saturday to go for a walk and that the first place I was going to visit would be Havana, the teacher surprised us on Wednesday when he told us that we were going for a walk in the afternoon as part of an exercise.

Bueno, las clases empezaron bastante intensas desde el primer día, muchísimo contenido interesante que entender y procesar, y cuando pensaba que tendría que esperar al sábado para salir a pasear y que el primer lugar que iba a visitar sería La Habana, el profesor nos sorprendió el miércoles cuando nos dijo que nos íbamos de paseo en la tarde como parte de un ejercicio.

At about 2:00 in the afternoon we got on a small bus from the school, all super excited, and left for Playa Baracoa, a coastal town in the province of Artemisa which is about 32 km from where we were.

Como a las 2:00 de la tarde nos montamos en un pequeño autobús de la escuela, todos súper emocionados, y partimos hacia Playa Baracoa, un pueblo costero de la provincia de Artemisa que queda a unos 32 Km de donde estábamos.

The course was about film screenwriting, both for short and feature films, and on that outing we were going to observe the location and then create characters and scenes with whatever caught our attention there.

El curso era sobre escritura de guiones cinematográficos, tanto de cortometrajes como de largometrajes, y en esa salida íbamos a observar el lugar y luego crear personajes y escenas con cualquier cosa que nos llamara la atención de allí.

It was very hot that afternoon, we knew we were going to a beach and we also knew we were not going to be able to swim 😄, but the fact that we could explore a little bit of Cuba, see how this town was, the people, the movement and other things, predicted that we would have an excellent time.

Hacía mucho calor esa tarde, sabíamos que íbamos a una playa y también sabíamos que no íbamos a poder bañarnos 😄, pero el hecho de poder explorar un poco de Cuba, ver cómo era este pueblo, la gente, el movimiento y otras cosas, auguraba que la pasaríamos excelente.

We got off the bus and the teacher told us that we were going to walk around the main areas of the place, like the center and of course the beach, the idea was that we would see, photograph, ask anything if we wanted to and thus make our imagination fly so we could then write and present something interesting to him in the next class.

Nos bajamos del autobús y el profesor nos dijo que íbamos a caminar por las zonas principales del lugar, como el centro y por supuesto la playa, la idea era que viéramos, fotografiáramos, preguntáramos cualquier cosa si queríamos y así hacer volar nuestra imaginación para luego poder escribir y presentarle algo interesante en la siguiente clase.

Apart from the professor, in the course group there was only one Cuban classmate, the rest of us the students were foreigners, from Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Spain, so for almost all of us, this environment was something new and stimulating.

Aparte del profesor, en el grupo del curso sólo había un compañero cubano, el resto de nosotros éramos extranjeros, de Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, México y España, así que para casi todos, este ambiente era algo nuevo y estimulante.

Like any coastal town on a Wednesday, there were not many people here for tourism, so we were able to observe the daily life with less interference. People working on their motorcycles and bicycle cabs, relaxing in a square, buying bread or working in the sea, fishing is one of the main activities here.

Como cualquier pueblo costero un miércoles, no había mucha gente por aquí en plan de turismo, así que pudimos observar la cotidianidad con menos interferencias. Gente trabajando en sus motos y bicitaxis, relajados en una plaza, comprando pan o en sus labores en el mar, la pesca es una de las actividades principales aquí.

We went for a walk along the coastline and found a beautiful and at the same time dramatic landscape, because in that part there are many ruins of houses destroyed by the constant cyclones that hit Cuba.

Nos fuimos a caminar por la línea costera y nos encontramos con un paisaje bello y a la vez dramático, y es que en esa parte hay muchas ruinas de casas arrasadas por los constantes ciclones que azotan Cuba.

Shortly after we arrived at the main beach of Baracoa Beach, with a postcard atmosphere, crystal clear and serene waters, refreshing wind, palm trees and some places to eat around.

Poco después llegamos al principal balneario de Playa Baracoa, con un ambiente de postal, aguas cristalinas y serenas, viento refrescante, palmeras y algunos sitios para comer alrededor.

Oh, who could dive in! But we were there for other reasons, and in front of that paradisiacal scenery we sat down to write down our impressions, ideas and other things to be able to do our homework later.

¡Ay quien pudiera zambullirse! Pero estábamos allí por otros motivos, y frente a ese paradisíaco escenario nos sentamos a escribir nuestras impresiones, ideas y demás para poder hacer luego la tarea.

Then we got thirsty and went to a restaurant or ranchón, as they say in Cuba, to buy a drink and also to browse.

Después nos atacó la sed y fuimos a un restaurante o ranchón, como le dicen en Cuba, a comprar alguna bebida y también a curiosear.

As you can see, rum rules here, but I ordered a cold malta, that yummy non-alcoholic barley drink.

Como pueden ver, el ron manda aquí, pero yo pedí una malta bien fría, esa rica bebida de cebada sin alcohol.

Some companions bought a bottle of rum to share and also ordered food: chicken, potatoes and salad. It was funny how they served all that in a cardboard box, it was the rum box 😂, I tried some potatoes and they were very tasty.

Algunos compañeros compraron una botella de ron para compartir y también pidieron comida: pollo, papas y ensalada. Nos hizo gracia cómo sirvieron todo eso en una caja de cartón, era la de los rones 😂, probé algunas papitas y estaban muy sabrosas.

We were in high spirits there and the dog from the ranchón came to see what we were up to...

Estábamos muy animados allí y el perro del ranchón vino a ver qué nos traíamos...

We all wanted to stay a little longer, but it was getting late, it was about 6:00, and we had to leave. No doubt this “academic” outing to Baracoa Beach left us all wanting to know more of the country, and that came on the weekend when we were able to go to Havana already in tourism mode, an experience that I will tell in another post, I hope you found this one entertaining, until the next #tbt!

Todos queríamos quedarnos un rato más, pero se nos había hecho tarde, eran como las 6:00, y teníamos que irnos.
