PhotoFeed Contest - Cityscape - The Cathedral of Lisbon.

Hi everyone!

Bonus post featuring another location in Lisbon that I completed forgot to upload. This time I found a tiny paved area with a few benches nestled in the streets on the way up the hillside to the castle, east of the city.

The Cathedral of Lisbon was built in 1147 and has been rebuilt throughout the following centuries after sustaining damage in wars and The Great Lisbon Earthquake.

The building in the foreground is the church of Saint Anthony. The iteration we see today was built in 1755 after the earthquake destroyed the original building from around the 12th century- a large home where the saint was born which was converted into a chapel.

Towering over the city atop the valley is São Jorge Castle (Saint Georges Castle).
Excavations at the site over recent years have found evidence of occupation from around the 8th Century BC with Roman, Ancient Greek, Moorish and Celtic remains found.
It was the seat of King of Portugal from 1255 onwards until 14th Century. After his reign, the castle had fallen into decay after King Manuel I deemed it unsuitable for his tastes. Whereas King Sebastian ordered the rebuilding of the royal apartments in the castle.
Forces from Castile (part of modern day Spain) attempted to invade a few times throughout the 14th Century and failed.

The castle has seen expansion, demolition, and rebuilding after changes in ruler and/ or earthquake. Today, the castle stands as a monument of Portuguese independence. The current iteration appears similar to how it was originally and the core structure was refurbished by the government.

Even from this drone perspective, the castle is hidden by the foliage of the trees when looking at the hill from the south!

Editing the photos after shooting directly into the sun was tough but the sunset was too good to miss!

Lastly, a kings eye view of the city and river that would have likely offered a tremendous advantage against incoming forces. This position is just on the edge of the rectangular restricted zone over the Pomnballine Baixa, a national monument of Lisbon.

This is the end of Lisbon posts as far as the drone goes, however I am currently writing a #Wednesdaywalk post so keep an eye out for that!

Hope you enjoyed this seeing the city from a different perspective.

Until the next time!
