One of the oldest and busiest streets in Old Havana is Mercaderes. This block, which extends from Tacón Street (near the Cathedral of Havana) to the emblematic Plaza Vieja, is one of the first chosen to tour the city. Surrounded by tourists and locals, it is an experience full of surprises.

Mercaderes is one of the oldest and busiest places in Havana, a prelude to the Cuban city. One of its and the best preserved Old City. Its four blocks can be seen with the naked eye starting in Tacón and culminating in the historically innumerable Plaza Vieja. The presence of culture is visible, artistic doors, roofs and lamps that by following the layout of the street take us a hundred years in the past, going back to the eighteenth century. Today, these thirty-nine years are recombined, setting up museums, shops, canteens and projects so that the people of Haban know in detail the origin of their trade.

Now, we are struck by the emblematic Mural of the Personalities that pays tribute to the enlightened of the nineteenth century; this set of art and nobility revives the old “Artistic and Literary High School of Havana” that was located near the Plaza de Armas. All this gave particularity and amount of joy to the habaneros of that time. There, with the walking scenarios, we see the imposing figure of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the father of the Homeland, the Sword Bishop, the Countess of Merlin or the poet Plácido among other relevant in history; an endless number of figures painted on the Mural, designed by the artist Andrés Carrillo with advanced material for the time of the City.

This one consists of 300m², composed of 52 panels, with 13 tones representing 67 figures, it also had the help of the architect Jaime Rodríguez, the sculptor Nicolás Ramos Guiardinú, several students of the School of San Alejandro and some institutions for its creation. This mural completes its construction on December 27, 2000.

In this way, Mercaderes gives us the possibility of being before the guardian of our history, unprecedented in Cuban muralry. Inviting us to go through his legacy and remember the work and detail with which it was created.

If you’re in Havana, don’t miss the opportunity to come and admire this great work in the streets of Old Havana
