Street Art in Portugal

avatar

I've been gathering and saving these street art photos for some time now and I think that I'm about due to share them. I haven't taken part in CCC's Street Art Contest in a while either so that makes me doubly due... Is that a phrase?

The pieces that I'm showcasing were spotted in Portugal in various places during our trip to the country back in may of 2022.

This first piece (above) is a very unique collaboration between the American artist Shepard Fairey and a locally based Portugese artist by the name of Vhils. I saw it in Lisbon Portugal and really loved the colors done by Fairey and the unique chisel design of Vhils. I've seen a few other pieces done by Vhils and his carving style of art is always super recognizable.

This next one was also seen in Lisbon and was completed by Add Fuel. I don't know much about the artist but this piece definitly looks Portugese. The artwork is made to look as if the building is made up of layers and layers of Portugese tiles called Azulejo. If you were to peel back one layer of tiles another one would be there just below its surface. I think that is pretty clever.

Another mural spotted in Lison was created by a female street artist by the name of Tami Hopf. It's a very feminine piece in a nice setting with a view of the water. Its a great location choice by the artist, no doubt about that.

This next one is a a squiggly face, tag style piece that I saw in Porto Portugal and I actually really liked it despite its super simple design. I don't know the artist for this one but like the placement on the colored background.

The one above was also seen in Porto while we were wondering around the streets. I wasn't overly thrilled or inpressed by it but the color palette is nice so I decided to snap a photo.

My last find was in Porto agaun and it's by an artist named Fredrico Draw. He mostly creates human focussed realistic life-like images, like this one. It doesn't speak to my particular taste in street art but I can appreciate the work. It's quite good.

Well thats it for now. What do you think of the art? Which is your favorite? Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

was it painted right when the buildings were under construction or after they were built?

I don't know specifically but I imagine they were painted long after the buildings were built. Most of the buildings looked quite old and generally street art isn't painted on new builds

When I think of Portugal, the street art first comes to mind. They really have indeed a lot of those things and nice that you captured them :D

I had no idea that Portugal is such a beautiful and artistic place. It's on my wishlist. Loved it

Streetart adds always so much value to a city! The first one is my favourite, love the colors!

I like that first one. I have always wanted to see someone do these super big side of building ones. In my head I like to think it's an urban guerrilla type instead of a licensed person with scaffolding and time :0)

Yeah that's true. I've never seen anyone working on them but likely the large ones like this are commissioned by the city or building owner or someone.

Hmm, I see I have to go back!

We saw in Lisbon a few murals but missed taking photos of them, and Porto - we just saw the city during the night as the next day a heavy rain chased us away. These you showed are all nice, but the first two are superb!

Both cities are great to visit so if you ever go back you might be able to see the murals, or others. I'm sure that there are lots of great street art murals in each city.

I like the first one the most, because I like art that contains the human form.
The second one is pretty amazing with the layered effect.
I think I could replicate the squiggly face, even after a bottle of red wine.

The one you're not so fond of looks like a kind of 70's design. My sister-in-law has a lot of fabric and wallpaper that looks similar...It's not my fav either.

Good spot of that feminine piece in the water:)
You've got the 👁

I hope to visit there one day, and I remember some of your previous travel ones that I'd refer back to:)))

So true about the squiggly face

Awesome street art. I´ve seen works from the artists of the first two paintings as well as the last one in Lagos on the Algarve and on the Azores. Very talented artists.

The good artists really get around. Often they are all over the country or across Europe or even the world. It's nice when you stubble upon a piece and recognize the artist.

Great selection of Street Art. Lisbon and Porto are "Street Art cities", on every corner there is something to see. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Yeah there was a lot of good street art in the cities. Just one more reason to visit them. We really enjoyed both places.

Yeah apparently the artist of the first mural uses mild explosives to create his work. Quite a unique way of doing things. Lol

'mild explosives' sound strange to my ears. what it could be?.. (or I did understand you not correctly) I'd rather suggest it could be 'abrasive paper', smth of this kind... hmmm

carving the billbords, the walls, scratching the walls... now I heard all the legend behind. he did invented something new, his result attracts and impress -- but that is crazy, ruining the house to leave his artistic mark, dont you think so? I think I cant agree with that... 😨

@digi-me, check this. you may find the info about this street artist intresting! 😏

Yeah it's interesting but I agree that the damage to the building isn't right. Exposing the bricks and such could allow water to get into the walls and do damage. On the old unoccupied buildings it would be fine but if it was my house or shop I'd be pretty angry

I'll check Tami Hopf...

....Just did! Apparently she is also a tattoo artist. Very cool style, I can see that the French are eating that up like it was croissants.

Nice tour buddy, thanks!

Her style does seem tattoo like so that's not surprising to learn. Cool!
