STREET ART #221 – Beautiful art in Comuna 13, Medellin, Colombia

The city of Medellin was maybe the city that suprised me the most when it comes to street art. No matter which part of town, the streets, stairways and narrow alleys looked like open-air art galleries. I managed to find out about some of the artists. Many are locals, but many international artists have contributed as well. The district that seemed to have the highest consentration is Comuna 13. I went on a guided walking tour, which turned out to be a good idea. Not only to get information about the murals, but also the story they tell about resilience. The district is a must visit if you want to learn about the history of Medellin. Once this district used to among the world's most dangerous places. Violence and crime was widespread. In resent years this has changed. The district has gone through a transformation that has led to it becomming a vibrant area where you will find amazing street art and young street dance performers.

The Comuna 13 was once a poor neighborhood noone payed any notice. Pablo Escobar was one of, or maybe the most famous drug lord the world has seen. During the 1970s the Comuna 13 came under his control. In the 1980s Comuna 13 was known as a dangerous place.

Amazing street art is what you will find now. From being a neighborhood dominated by violence and crime, Comuna 13 is now a place where the creativity of the inhabitants dominates. Since I went on a guided walking tour we learned some facts about Pablo Escobar and "Operation Orion". This operation came into being by the president in October 2002. It took two days with guns, tanks and helicopters to end this era. But a lot of people were killed during the operation. I found this visit to Comuna 13 one of the best experiences in Medellin.
