STREET ART #218 – East Side Gallery in Berlin, Germany

This week I will continue with more murals on the historic wall in Berlin. The famous open-air gallery with paintings are located by the river. There is 1.300 meters of preserved wall still here. The wall that once divided Berlin into two parts , was demolished in 1989. People from both sides could then meet. The wall definitly has a historical significanse. Many people died when they tried to cross.

Today this piece of the wall stands as a monument from the era. It was on November 9, in the year 1989 that the wall was demolished. This happend during the revolution against the dictatorship in East Germany / GDR. In 1990 East Germany was reunited with West Germany. After the fall more than a hundred artists from around the world have been decorating the walls with a countless number of murals.

This mural is done by Andrej Smolák. It is a mural of some length. The chain is held by a white dove – the dove of peace.

This mural has a text underneath that says « Vergest Mir die Liebe Nicht» which means «Don't forget my love». The picture gives a completely different impression and depicts a completely different side of life than most of the others on the wall.
There are lots of murals all the way, but I only took photos of those that I found interesting. The wall is famous. Even though not all are actually well painting or interesting, I wouldn't have missed it.

It's cool to see this wall completely change its role, from separating and dividing people to displaying works of art. We would like to see more initiatives like this in today's world. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Beautiful murals. I can see a message about those wall arts at the latter parts.
