STREET ART #193 – Operation Rosario presented in street art in Buenos Aires, Argentina

(Edited)

A walk to some of the parks in Buenos Aires, made us discover street art on our way. When we passed these, we understood that the theme is the Falkland War. When looking at it, I slightly recalled the conflict between Argentina and United Kingdom. Argentina started an invasion on the 2nd of April 1982 that lasted ten weeks (had to google to find the exact date), when Argentina surrendered and the British kept control of the islands. The conflict was a despute over the sovereignty of the islands. These islands are located close to Argentina's coast, in the south. When looking at a map, it will be natural to assume they are part of Argentna. The two countries declared the islands a war zone. It was not really defined as a war.

The conflict started when Argentina claimed that the islands belong to them. The military action was a reclamation of their own territory. But the British saw it as an invation of their territory. Since 1841 the islands have been part of the British Crown as a colony and most of the people living there, are of British origin. At that time (1982) Argentina was ruled by a military government. Because they «lost» the islands, they experienced protests from the Argentine people. This helped the domocratisation process of the country. A civil president was wlected in 1983. Even though they have declared the islands fro being Argentine, I believe the Falkland are still a self-governed British Territory.

Around the corner we saw these. The walll had lots of graffiti, but most of them quite damaged.

It's always interesting when StreetArt immerses us in history. I think that these islands are still an issue in the relations between the two countries. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Have a lovely weekend
