STREET ART #150 - «Los Madres de Mayo / Mothers of Plaza de Mayo" (Argentina)
In the centre of Buenos Aires, on Avenue de Mayo, I passed this huge mural on my way to the El Congresso (the Congress). The theme is the mothers whos children disappared during a period of political unrest in Argentina. I did not understand this mural while I was looking at it. It was first the next day when I was in the district of La Boca, where I saw a mural with the same theme. In La Boca I did a guided tour, therefore we got an explanation to that mural. It was first when I went through my photos I noticed this mural has the same theme as the one in La Boca.
The women are motheres wearing white scarfs on their heads. I recognize these as «los Madres de Mayo».( like the mural in La Boca). What these mothers have in common is that they have children who disappeared when the military took over in Argentina in 1976. Tens of thousands of people were abducted and killed. The mothers of the disappeared have since gathered at Plaza de Mayo, the central sqaure in Buenos Aires as a protest and demontration to find out what has happened to their sons and daughters. A way to make them selves known to each other, was to put on the white head scarf. These mothers became known as the" Mothers of Plaza de Mayo".
The mural in La Boca refers to what happend in the year 1976 after a military coup. Brutal methods were adopted by the authorities in order to make sure that everyone who opposed to the regime was eradicated. During this «dirty war» thousand of people disappeared. From my guided tour in La Boca, I learned that it is assumed that as many as 30.000 people had disappeared during this period. I quess the same part of history goes for this mural as well.

Great mural my friend @digi-me, which brings with it a story from many years ago that apparently still holds true today.
