The Cliffs of Moher!

avatar

In the last post I took you on a tour on top of Croagh Patrick and today we’ll be exploring the Cliffs of Moher!

The Cliffs of Moher, located on the western coast of Ireland, are quite an amazing place to visit, especially because we do not have many cliffs in Europe that are this high. They run for 14 kilometers across and rise to a maximum height of 214 meters above the Atlantic Ocean. The cliffs themselves got their name from an old fort called Mothar or Moher, which once stood on the southernmost point of the cliffed coast.

It’s a popular tourist site and is best seen from below with a boat that passes the cliffs every hour or so. In fact, I think if you don’t see them by boat you only see very little of them as all of the details of which one of them are the lively bird colonies can only be experienced from the ocean. The cliffs also have a beach, but it is generally only very narrow located at few spots and it is hard to get to. So boat it is… Oh, and there are also surfers here which struck me as somewhat odd since the waves did not seem to be very high

You can really get a scale of these cliffs by looking at the thin sliver of houses on top of them. Since their roofs have the same color as the cliffs it might be hard to spot them! You can also see the famous isolated rock in front of the cliffs on the second picture as well as an old tower which again gives a sense of scale.

A close up of the tall standing rock where you can see the same texture/composition as the cliffs. In other words, erosion carved a path between the cliffs and the rock and it is only a matter of time that the rock tower will vanish into the sea…

Here are some more close ups of the cliffs and the “beach”. Can you spot some wild life?

Did you get opportunity to climb the cliff? I would've loved to see you there on top with some great snap. Nevertheless this place is beautiful.

Thanks for sharing friend

no I didn't 😅 Not even sure if that is a thing there, but would be amazing I guess. Although it would be very challenging as it is wet and slippery
