In every country and region of the world, there are architectural heritages of great value and importance for those places, and that is the case of this basilica or catholic church, which regardless of the religious beliefs of all the inhabitants, is part as an icon of the city of Maracaibo, Zulia state - Venezuela. It has always been an architectural and cultural reference of the region, being part of the idiosyncrasy and regionality of the area.

The construction of this basilica dates back to 1685, when Captain Juan de las Nieves Andrade began with the first foundations of this church, which was initially built of mud and straw, within a context where Venezuela was colonized by the Spanish empire, and of course began to develop a greater influence of Catholicism in the country.

But through the years, many restorations and extensions of this temple began to be made, from the beginning with a style very marked by the colonial architecture, mainly by the influence of the Spanish, who were developing through the baroque architecture until after the independence of the country, the basilica underwent major reforms that gave it an architectural appearance with a republican and neoclassical style, making this structure more imposing and of a more significant architectural value.

Now, as can be seen in the photographs, the basilica is made up of 5 domes, 2 of which are located on the facade and function as bell towers, in addition to the conformation of the facade by a Greek pediment supported by 4 Corinthian columns and certain ornamental modifications throughout the structure of the church.

Undoubtedly, it is an architectural work that has left a mark from the first moment of its construction, going through its own evolution to become one of the most important architectural works of Venezuela. Having within its walls a great number of stories over several centuries.

Although I do not show you pictures of its interior, for reasons of time I could not formalize a permit to take pictures inside, if I can assure you that it is a marvel of design, perhaps the most impressive among all the churches I have been able to visit, which can be seen many photos on the Internet, but even so I could capture several postcard photographs of its exterior design, which at first glance is very striking when visiting the streets of downtown Maracaibo.

Downtown, where several structures of historical architectural value are kept, such as the Baralt theater, the legislative palace, the Bolivar square, the governor's office and among other works that are adjacent to the basilica, which is mainly a jewel for the inhabitants, who refer to this structure with a great sense of belonging.

On the other hand, for me it is a privilege to be able to visit and witness such structures, to have the opportunity to capture the majesty of its construction that is captured by the posteriority of our civilization, as an architectural record of our history.

All photographs are my own and were taken with a Canon T3i camera.

Greetings @wilfredocav, a building with many years, despite the various remodeling still retains some colonial architecture and have added new elements, the facade looks spectacular and sculptures in the central part make it stand out much more.

Blessings!

An icon not only of Maracaibo but of Venezuela. I have never been able to be inside it, I have only been able to admire it from the outside, lovely post, I did not remember in such detail its beauty, thanks for sharing it.

I went in quickly but they didn't let me take pictures, because I had to ask for permission and the truth is that I didn't have time for that, but another time I will go in more calmly. Greetings !

This is a small and iconic basilica, whose figure transcends the Zulian region limits and remains in our memory once we know it... Just as you say it in your lines, just as the effect that your explicit photographs achieve when observed... Good record of details, good publication... Thanks for sharing!...

It is that the cupolas are of Arabic influence and perhaps that is why they have some resemblance.

Fascinating church @wilfredocav! Looking at its present condition, who would have thought that the sacred landmark had humble beginnings - being constructed of mud and straw, right? And through the generations, its architectural style has evolved until embodying its current republican and neoclassical character. As a result, a truly imposing building stands today. 😊

I've noticed that the bell towers have clocks installed on the 4 sides. Have you heard of the superstition that the times on these timepieces are purposely set differently? This is rumored to confuse the evil spirits. I'm not sure about that church because it seems that the times are the same. 🤔

That is the impressive thing about this structure that evolved over time as you mention, and according to chroniclers the beginning of this structure was from mud and straw. And with respect to the clocks, one always hears superstitions of different churches and also architectural works of the colonial era, where spirits are involved. Even at some point I would like to review about the clock of Guigue, Carabobo state, where many mysteries have been spoken about that clock. Greetings !

That's true. Even though we try to stay away from superstitions by sticking to the facts, our human nature always tends to seek for answers. And that doesn't spare architecture and design because there are a lot of questions to be investigated in these fields. The clock of Guigue would be an interesting topic next time. Cheers! 😊
