Gateway of Taj Mahal : "Drawaza –e – Rauza"
We might get multiple number of posts or blogs or contents over the internet, elaborating on the beauty of Taj Mahal. It is indeed one of the Mughals masterpiece, that showcase the architectural beauty. This what makes Taj mahal into the list of wonders of the world. Before I fell in love with the the Taj, I was mesmerized with the beauty of the gateway that takes to the Taj. The gateway, that will leads all the visitors close to the white mossouleum. The gate way in itself is a masterpiece, one of the most impressive features leading to the beauty of Taj mahal.
me right in front of the gateway, appreciating the beauty of the red snadstone standing tall, right in front of the Taj.
This gateway structure in 93 feet high and 150 feet wide. It was designed and constructed in the year 1632-1638 by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, who also happens to be the main architect of Taj Mahal. This gateway is also referred as Drawaza – e – Rauza, literally meaning ‘the gate of the mausoleum' i.e Taj Mahal. The stunning view of Taj Mahal from the gateway is one of the most sought after view of Taj Mahal. However, breaking the streotypes appeal, today I will showcase the gateway architectural beauty, which pulled my attention from a faraway distance.
The green sprawling garden leading to the gateway was too mesmirinzing. I went to this place in 2012 and the memory is still been fresh intact. I found these pictures while going through old drives. The gateway is rectangular in shapes. It is a double storied Red Sandstone building. The Gateway to the Taj Mahal is a unique piece of architecture in itself. The building is adorned with tombs, on the four corners and 22 chatris on two sides of it.
This gateway, separates the busy and the bustling outside world and the tranquil ambiance within the grounds of the Taj Mahal. The below image is from inside the compound view. Once you get past the gateway, you will be welcomed at this besutiful ground. This area allows visotor to take some stunning view of the Taj Mahal.
If we look closely at the gateway, there were some magnificent calligraphy work done on the walls. The walls were adorned with Arabic calligraphy from Quran inlaid in black stone. It is inscribed with Hindu motifs, which shows the evidence of Hindu influence in Mughal architecture. The motifs of flowers, red lotuses, leaves and vines ornament are foud everywhere on the walls makingthe gateway a masterpeice in itself.
Visiting Taj Mahal is not only about the white marble beauty but there are so many beautiful architecture to talk about. The gate way is one such example, which also help in protecting the Taj from rebels. It is a a masterpeice in itself.
