Getting to know Victoria Lodge No. 9 from the inside / Conociendo la Logia Victoria Nº 9 desde dentro

Last year, I posted about the Masonic Temple of La Victoria, in Aragua (Venezuela), talking a little about its history and what Freemasonry is, but I only stood in front of its facade because the door was closed and I didn't dare knock.

El año pasado hice una publicación sobre el Templo Masónico de La Victoria, en Aragua (Venezuela), en la que hablé un poco sobre su historia y qué es la masonería, pero sólo estuve frente a su fachada porque la puerta estaba cerrada y no me atreví a tocar.

A few months later, in December, I received a message on one of my social media accounts. Someone from the Lodge had come across my article on X, shared it with other members, and one of them contacted me to invite me to see this place from the inside, it was a big surprise for me.

Unos meses después, en diciembre, recibí un mensaje por una de mis redes sociales. Alguien de la Logia se topó con mi artículo en X, lo compartió con otros miembros y uno de ellos me contactó para invitarme a conocer este lugar por dentro, fue una gran sorpresa para mí.

I had planned to publish this experience at the beginning of the year, but for one reason or another, until now I hadn't had the time to sit down and organize all the information and present it here in the best possible way.

Tenía pendiente publicar esta experiencia a principios de año, pero por una cosa u otra, hasta ahora no había tenido tiempo para sentarme a organizar toda la información y presentarla aquí de la mejor manera posible.

The date was December 21, the winter solstice, a day that Freemasons celebrate with a White Meeting, which means that the lodge is open to the general public, something that, according to what I was told, happens only twice a year. In addition, there would be a Masonic ceremony recognizing civil marriage.

La cita fue el 21 de diciembre, solsticio de invierno, un día que los masones celebran con una Tenida Blanca, lo que significa que la logia está abierta al público en general, algo que según me dijeron, sucede sólo dos veces al año. Además, habría una ceremonia de reconocimiento masónico de matrimonio civil.

The event began at 9:00 a.m., but I was told to arrive an hour early so I could take photos of the spaces at my leisure and also interview some members of the lodge. I was welcomed by Luis Enrique Feo Colombo, Worshipful Master of the Respectable Victoria Lodge No. 9, who had invited me, and then during the course of the morning I spoke with several other people while they gave me a guided tour of the place.

El evento comenzaba a las 9:00 am, pero me dijeron que llegara una hora antes para poder hacer fotos de los espacios con más calma, y también para entrevistar a algunos miembros de la logia. Me recibió Luis Enrique Feo Colombo, Venerable Maestro de la Respetable Logia Victoria Nº 9, quien me hizo la invitación, y luego en el transcurso de la mañana hablé con varias otras personas mientras me hacían la visita guiada por el lugar.

Let's take a look inside this Masonic lodge. Upon entering the front door, there is a hallway or vestibule, and in the middle of it stands a statue representing the apprentice, the first degree received by those who join the order.

Veamos entonces el interior de esta logia masónica. Al atravesar la puerta de entrada hay un zaguán o vestíbulo, allí en el medio se encuentra una estatua que representa al aprendiz, el primer grado que reciben los que ingresan a la orden.

The apprentice has a chisel in one hand, and with it he is shaping a rough stone. The chisel is the tool that symbolizes wisdom, and the rough stone symbolizes the primitive, the uneducated human being. With guidance and intelligence, the apprentice carves his rough stone, that is, he discovers his potential to improve individually and become a useful part of society.

El aprendiz tiene un cincel en una mano y con él está dando forma a una piedra en bruto. El cincel es la herramienta que simboliza la sabiduría, y la piedra en bruto simboliza a lo primitivo, al ser humano sin instrucción. Con orientación e inteligencia el aprendiz va tallando su piedra en bruto, es decir, va descubriendo su potencial, para mejorar individualmente y convertirse en una pieza útil para la sociedad.

Around the statue there are several areas for socializing, activities, and meals. There are also many objects related to Freemasonry and antiques that are part of the history of this building.

Alrededor de la estatua hay varias áreas para socializar, realizar actividades y comidas. También hay muchos objetos relacionados con la masonería y antigüedades que forman parte de la historia de esta edificación.

This part of the lodge is like a small museum. In addition to the various objects on display, several of its walls feature historical information and portraits of prominent Venezuelans who were involved in Freemasonry.

Esta parte de la logia es como un pequeño museo. Además de los diferentes objetos exhibidos, en varias de sus paredes hay información histórica y retratos de venezolanos destacados que estuvieron involucrados en la masonería.

Apart from what can be seen, there is also what cannot be seen, such as an important archive full of historical documents, this lodge is one of the oldest in the country.

Aparte de lo que se puede ver, está también lo que no, como por ejemplo un importante archivo lleno de documentos históricos, esta logia es de las más antiguas del país.

Let us now move on to another area, the Secretariat, located to the right of the entrance. In this small office filled with books and documents, there are also many items representative of the fraternity.

Pasemos ahora a otra área, la Secretaría, ubicada a la derecha de la entrada. En esta pequeña oficina llena de libros y documentos, también hay muchos objetos representativos de la fraternidad.

There is the square and compass, the chisel, the candlestick, and everyday accessories such as aprons, bands or necklaces, among others.

Está la escuadra y el compás, el cincel, el candelabro y accesorios de uso cotidiano como mandiles (delantales), bandas o collares, entre otros.

It is through the Secretariat area that one can access the temple itself, the main space for ceremonies and rituals, a place full of symbols that I found dazzling.

Es a través del área de la Secretaría que se puede tener acceso al templo propiamente dicho, el espacio principal para ceremonias y rituales, un lugar lleno de símbolos que me pareció deslumbrante.

The design of Masonic temples is inspired by King Solomon's Temple, with a rectangular shape extending toward the light, from East to West. The entrance is flanked by two columns, J and B (Jachin and Boaz), representing the fundamental principles of the order: balance, light and darkness, progress and limits.

El diseño de los templos masónicos está inspirado en el Templo del Rey Salomón, su forma rectangular se extiende en dirección a la luz, de Oriente a Occidente. La entrada está flanqueada por dos columnas, J y B (Jakim y Boaz), que representan principios fundamentales de la orden, el equilibrio: luz y oscuridad, progresos y límites.

The first thing that caught my attention was the celestial vault, which represents the sky, the cosmos. In Freemasonry symbolizes the immensity of the universe and is a reminder to Freemasons that the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom is an infinite task.

Lo primero que me llamó la atención fue la bóveda celeste, que representa el cielo, el cosmos. En la masonería simboliza la inmensidad del universo y es un recordatorio para los masones de que la búsqueda del conocimiento y la sabiduría es una tarea infinita.

Then stands out the checkerboard on the floor, the black and white squares representing harmony and dissonance, good and evil. Together they also reflect tolerance.

Luego destaca el damero en el piso, los cuadrados blancos y negros que representan la armonía y la disonancia, el bien y el mal. Juntos reflejan también la tolerancia.

All the architectural and decorative elements seen in the temple have their meaning; nothing is placed there simply for aesthetic reasons or on a whim.

Todos los elementos arquitectónicos y decorativos que se observan en el templo tienen su significado; nada está puesto allí simplemente por razones estéticas o por capricho.

The chains surrounding the space are a symbol of the unity of all Freemasons.

Las cadenas que rodean el espacio son un símbolo de la unidad de todos los masones.

At the base of columns J and B lie the rough stone and the cubic stone. The former is a metaphor for the Freemasons in their early days, and the latter, polished and shiny, symbolizes the ideal of spiritual and moral perfection they seek to achieve.

A los pies de las columnas J y B yacen la piedra en bruto y la piedra cúbica. La primera es una metáfora de los masones en sus inicios, y la segunda, pulida y brillante, simboliza el ideal de perfección espiritual y moral que buscan alcanzar.

Swords are another of the objects we can see here. They are key pieces of Masonic regalia, important ceremonial instruments, symbols of the honor, courage, and dignity of all Masons.

Las espadas son otro de los objetos que podemos ver aquí. Son piezas principales de la investidura masónica, importantes instrumentos ceremoniales, símbolo del honor, valor y dignidad de todo masón.

Another decorative feature that stands out in the temple are the 12 columns that support the celestial vault. Here they are drawn on the side walls, six on each side, and each one has a sign of the zodiac.

Otro aspecto decorativo que destaca en el templo son las 12 columnas que sostienen la bóveda celestial. Aquí están dibujadas en las paredes laterales, seis a cada lado, y cada una tiene un signo del zodiaco.

The twelve constellations of the zodiac govern the universe and the beings that inhabit it. Each sign represents a stage that the Mason goes through within the order in the search for knowledge and wisdom.

Las doce constelaciones del zodiaco rigen al universo y a los seres que lo habitan. Cada signo representa una etapa por la que pasa el masón dentro la orden en la búsqueda del conocimiento y la sabiduría.

Let's continue looking at more details of the temple. In the center of the nave is the altar, the central altar of the temple, where oaths and rituals are performed. On the altar are the holy book, the square, and the compass.

Sigamos viendo más detalles del templo. En el centro de la nave se coloca el ara, el altar central del templo, donde se realizan los juramentos y rituales. Sobre el ara, el libro sagrado, la escuadra y el compás.

In the background, on the eastern wall, are the sun and moon, as a reminder of the original gods of the humanity.

Al fondo, en el muro Oriental, están el sol y la luna, como recordatorio de los dioses originales de la humanidad.

There, in the elevated area of the temple, under the canopy, is the throne, the seat of the Venerable Master, leader of the lodge.

Allí, en la zona elevada del templo, bajo el dosel, se encuentra el trono, el asiento del Venerable Maestro, líder de la logia.

There are many other significant elements that form part of the temple, it would take too long to describe them all, but if you are interested, I invite you to look for information both on the Internet and by visiting a lodge near you, all you have to do is knock on the door.

Hay muchos otros elementos significativos que forman parte del templo, sería muy extenso detallarlos todos, pero si están interesados, los invito a buscar información tanto en Internet como visitando alguna logia que tengan cerca, sólo tienen que tocar la puerta.

Victoria Lodge No. 9 has 18 members and meets one day a week, on Saturdays until noon. The women's lodge, Peace and Harmony, also operates here, consisting of 15 ladies.

La Logia Victoria Nº 9 tiene 18 miembros y trabaja un día a la semana, los sábados hasta el mediodía. Aquí también funciona la logia femenina, Paz y Armonía, conformada por 15 damas.

After visiting the temple, I was able to witness the Masonic recognition ceremony for civil marriage and the Winter Solstice celebration, which I will show you in another post.

Después de conocer el templo, pude presenciar la ceremonia de reconocimiento masónico de matrimonio civil y el ágape por el Solsticio de Invierno, de los cuales hablaré en otra publicación.
