Colon Market: Modernism & Modernity

avatar
(Edited)

Hello archi lovers!

Sometimes you don't have to go very far to discover impressive constructions, buildings or monuments... we have them close by and we can enjoy and admire them anytime we pass by.

This time it has been like that, without traveling far away, just an everyday day in which I was in downtown of what has been and still is my city Valencia, Spain. It is very pleasant to walk through those streets and we can also enjoy iconic elements that the inhabitants of the place normally enjoy and the visitors enjoy with more amazement.

It is about the Mercado de Colón or Colon Market (it would be the Columbus Market literally…) and I am also amazed when looking at its façade on a typical sunny day. The modernist style is evident, and the beauty of its details too. For example, in the upper left part, the mosaic shows the typical Valencian woman dressed in the regional costume (fallera dress) and there are orange trees, typical of this area where the best oranges in Europe are grown. A true symbol that is combined with the city's coat of arms and other smaller adorable details.

And if we look to the sides, the same thing happens, more curious details and decorations also in different parts, even in the internal part of the old ceiling. Due to the style of this building, it must be from the beginning of the 20th century, for many years it had to deteriorate, I barely remember it many years ago, to be honest, but I do remember when it was decided to restore it and reopen it, although this was also years ago.
The best thing is that the iconic façade and also the structure have been preserved, formerly it would be a market for merchandise, but now it is much more.

And this is where the modernist style converges with the current avant-garde modernity, that is, the combination of elements from the past and the present, making it acquire a futuristic air but with essence.

Upon entering we discover an immense open space and the columns with forged details lead us to look up. The structure is spectacular, it has been maintained, let's say that the skeleton is nothing more, but it is everything. And as if it were a big open church, they form three different spaces, the central one with an empty space that leads to a ground floor through escalators, where there are more stores, and the bathrooms, for example. But there are also two side areas, one on each side where there are currently small restaurants to have a drink, a soft drink, a beer, a wine, a coffee or an "horchata".

Yes, "horchata" is the typical Valencian drink, (a sweet drink that is made with a small dark tuber called “chufa”) and there are several places here, and it is very pleasant to sit in the shade when it is hot, and have an horchata in this environment. I recommend it.

During the Christmas holidays, all this is decorated and between the premises and the local space, in the black metallic arches with lighting they put craft stalls, the space acquires another character, endearing and appropriate to the moment. City life and this place are synchronized.

We continue looking at the ceiling and also in front, because you can go out or enter from the other side, where in each corner there are overhangs with the same characteristic style, flowers are usually sold here (unfortunately not on this day) and among flowers some they drink a wine even sitting outside in the sun. Look how beautiful decorated columns!

And outside we look again at the facade on the other side, similar but not the same, is it the main door? Perhaps it is this one, although both are beautiful, in this one there is an ad hoc roof with the building, structure and mixing styles, that is a modern design.

The surrounding buildings also seem to want to stand out and shine with their beautiful and elegant facades, but we will pay attention to them another day, perhaps in another post…

For the moment we are left with the feeling of having traveled through a different and original space in which we can feel that modernist magic of the past and that modern emotion of the present. A place where time stands still, and we enjoy drinking something there. Cheers!

Valencia, Spain ❤️ Europe

Thanks so much for reading! Have a beautiful and amazing day.

Thanks! Yeah the facade is unique, very nice and special. 😊👍

The construction is dual. On the one hand the facade speaks of possibly an ancient construction with the bricks and the engravings on the walls, however upon entering it is another story. The high ceiling and the large interior space with those modern cafes or restaurants. It is a beauty, it is like the union of two forces.

Exactly! It's a very interesting mix of styles and times. It was a very nice renewal, the best parts remain and just it has been adapted to new times, uses and people 😉
Thanks for the great comment!

Wow! You're truly blessed dear @duvinca to experience incredible architecture up close and personal within your Spanish homeland of Valencia! Despite being a market, that landmark is clearly a meticulously crafted masterpiece with design details that captivate our senses. Amazing! 👍

FUN FACT: Did you know that Colon is also the name of the oldest street in the Philippines? 😊

Thanks! Yes very happy because I can enjoy walking around here in this nice city with many interesting places. I have traveled but also here I can see beauty and inspiring architecture and impressive buildings so sometimes I like to share these close familiar wonders.
Ah well maybe there is a street there due to the Spanish influence somehow we are connected 😉

Exactly, the Philippines had tremendous Spanish influence in the past, spanning more than 3 centuries. Hence, our similarities in food, culture, religion, and language. I look forward to discovering more about your city's built treasures. Cheers! 😊

Your photographs look really professional, as usual.
I don't like to read, but I'll read this one...
You got them close by, well, that's an understatement. There's an entire cluster of incredibly beautiful cities: Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, Niebla, Huelva, Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada (!), Cartagena, Toledo, Segovia!
And I didn't even mention Salamanca, Barcelona, Santiago de Compostella, Burgos, Donostia, ... I could go on nearly forever... Badajoz, Lleida, Tarragona, Teruel, Requena, Caravaca de la Cruz, et cetera et cetera...
And Valencia of course 😉
I know Málaga better than I know Amsterdam. Amsterdam is beautiful too, but it's not in Spain.

Let me add some appropriate music to my comment. Triana is a barrio (neighborhood) in Sevilla.

Recuerdos are memories, for those who do not know. Memories of an evening.
Meanwhile, I'm not reading...
I can confirm your statement about going for a walk in Spain. It's hardly possible to get used to the relief of the Montes de Málaga, but still, they were great walks. The walks were even better when I lived near the center of Málaga, slightly to the east of the center, in el Barrio de la Victoria.

I met a dog today. The current 'owners' think it would be better for the dog to come live with me. They need a little more time to say goodbye, one of the daughters mainly, it's very hard on her.
So, that hurts, but I'll be going for walks again soon. 😃
But that, that hurts. To take a dog away from a young girl who's really attached to him. Ouch!

You are right about the oranges. I like the way you spelled façade; the only right way.

Those escalators don't belong there. They could have built wide marble stairs. Franco should have built at least one escalator though, in Rincón de la Victoria, up la Calle Limonero, and he should have built it a long time ago! I tried it on a bike, I couldn't do it, not in one go.

I like the old ceilings.
Have a great evening!

How can I sign in red?
Dead entity, better known as 'person', signs in blue.
Living human beings sign in red.
Perceived royalty signs in purple.
'King' Turd signed in black, which is even more dead than a person. 😁

Wow many things... about cities in Spain, as you have mentioned many are beautiful 😍 I think citizens don't know really how lucky they are living in this country that you know 😉
The dog story is touching, hope you can enjoy many nice walks but I understand the feelings about the little girl but she will understand (maybe) one day that you will take care well of the dog.
And about the market yes very modern but the "hole" is deep and a marble stairs not very easy for old people it should be long really... some elevators but also less aesthetic. Bit in general it's a pleasant place where to be.
And you are right about the color of the signature, we should also keep in kind the capital letters (for slaves since Roman times, "capitatis diminutio" or something like that).
We are humans with red heart ❤️ (although not easy to sign), not them, not the purple nor the black.
Be happy with the dog.

The dog is not here yet.
And there was another one interested in this particular dog, said the website where I found him.
They said they would bring the dog to me when they are done saying goodbye, when they are ready to give away their dog, for the dog's best interest. And my best interest.
But they may still decide they like the other interested 'person' better. So, yeah, it feels like I got a dog, but the deal ain't done yet.

I pulled some cards before I decided to want to 'have' this dog, have his companionship.

Otis Tarot spread.JPG

So, maybe he's not the right dog for me. Although, he did choose me. He was all over me.

Otis.jpg

And I had the impression that Otis, which would become Xerxes because there is something about names that start with an O - I don't know what, it's intuitive - so... I had the impression that Otis knew exactly what we came for.
Dogs are so much smarter, animals in general, are so much smarter than humans give them credit for.

I'll let you know when he lives with me.

Otis looks like cute, and the sight shows he is smart. Yeah let me know how all this is going on...

They are gonna bring him here, on Thursday at noon, local time.
I got some cleaning up to do. I haven't done anything for 20 months.
Bonito died 20 months ago.

I think my next blog entry will be all about Otis. Whose name won't be Xerxes, because numerologically it's the same as Sexrex, and we don't want that. Rex is king, we want no sex for him. So his name would become Wodan then. Otis becomes Odin, which then becomes Wodan or Wotan.

Good, yeah Otis or Wodan will be very happy there, have a good cleaning day 😉

That is Grant Ellman. His stage name is Grant Prezence. His dog is called Fozzie Bear.

I first saw him in the show of Max Igan, and in the show of Jeff Berwick. They both featured his video in their show, the song Grant had been working on, this one:

That was his first (not his first) small breakthrough. Since then, he collected only more fans. This was him 16 years ago:

So, his first breakthrough was at a really young age. But the people forgot, and he started all over, for himself, with some friends.

I made a playlist featuring most of his videos:

I never thought to do in on a screen, well in real life also difficult because we all used to use blue pens not red... but it's good to keep it in mind 😉
Maybe I can create a new banner not black but pink (pink is a soft red version, it suits better jajaja) I need to think about this better 😅

Wow! What an incredible construction @duvinca, the façade is spectacular, it has elements of modern and traditional architecture that converge perfectly, I liked the structure of the roof and the location of the stairs, the decoration is rich in details that embellish the place.

Greetings!

Thank you @belkyscabrera I'm glad you like it. This is a very special place, they kept the essence of the old times, the façade mainly, that style is really nice and beautiful but at the same time some modern elements have been added (stairs, modern coffees, etc...) to make this place very functional and pleasant. 🤗
