Towers With No Shadows

ARCHITECTURAL GENIUS AT ALDGATE

I couldn't believe they could squeeze even more towers into the gaps between the new towers at Aldgate. Opposite Algate East Station, near Whitechapel, there used to be a small city park and open space area, as well as a round about, which I'm sure nearly nobody remembers (unless you're a local in the area). I remember this because it was one of they routes I used to go through to get to work in those days. I also took quite a lot of photos there on my way home. It was when I was really into street photography, especially using film camera.

I should dig out some of those photos and make a post about it one day. Sadly they are stored away in analog form, yet to be scanned, in storage boxes and I can't be bothered to go foraging through them just yet.

A few years ago the area was developed. Aldgate East got new exits, a few new buildings, including sky scrapers, were erected in the previously open space, and a mini town sprung up around the area. Being adjacent to Whitechappel and Shoreditch (Brick Lane), it was a mix of new and old London.

There's a lot of glass, even more than usual, on those towers. I wonder if it's on purpose because it reflects the sky in such a way that it makes the area seem less claustrophobic than it could be. It gives the appearance of a sky where there's none. It also reflects the rays of the fun back down to areas that would otherwise be in the shadows of these mighty structures. If that was on purpose, and not a mere coincidence, then that's architectural genius.

Peace & Love,

Adé

Fascinating, I haven't been there for a long, long time.

The way it's going, "the city" will merge with Stratford soon. both are expanding fast. All the bits in between; Bow, Mile End, etc, are seeing these towers going up one after the other.

Are they office or residential or both?

Both. These ones are offices so far, but I can say for the new ones that are currently going up

You made a mistype which I actually love: "rays of the fun back down"!

What an awesome phrase - maybe even a song title!

Hahaha. Thanks. I wonder how many songs were inspired this way 😅
