[ENG/ESP] The simple magic of a family Sunday
Happy start to the week, everyone. I sincerely hope you have a fabulous day—and, above all, a very productive one. A new week is beginning, and with it come new challenges. I’m sure mine will be very busy, because I have a lot of tasks lined up for the coming days.
Easter is just around the corner, and, as expected, our phone didn’t stop ringing all weekend. Everyone wants to be in top shape to welcome the tourists and seasonal visitors arriving on the island, and that means work, organization, and a lot of energy.
Luckily for me, I feel my energy fully recharged. Yesterday, Sunday, I spent time with my family doing various activities, and although not everything went perfectly, being with them has that magical power to transform any gloomy moment into a bright, luminous one filled with love. That’s what family is—a refuge where simplicity is truly beautiful.
We got up early because the quails had started hatching in the incubator on Saturday, and we had to prepare the cage that will be their nursery for the next three weeks. Since quails are very restless from the moment they’re born, we lined the cage with cardboard to protect them from drafts and prevent them from bumping into things when they jump. They’re small, fragile, and curious, so every detail matters.
Feliz inicio de semana para todos. De corazón deseo que su día sea fabuloso y, sobre todo, muy productivo, una nueva semana comienza y con ella nuevos retos. Yo estoy segura de que el mío será de mucha actividad, porque tengo muchísimas tares programadas para estos días.
Ya se acerca Semana Santa y, como era de esperarse, nuestro teléfono no dejó de sonar durante todo el fin de semana. Todos quieren estar en óptimas condiciones para recibir a los turistas y temporadistas que llegan a la isla, y eso significa trabajo, organización y mucha energía.
Por suerte para mí, siento mis energías renovadas al máximo. Ayer domingo estuve con mi familia haciendo varias actividades y, aunque no todas salieron perfectas, estar con ellos tiene ese poder mágico de transformar cualquier momento gris en uno blanco, luminoso y lleno de cariño. Así es la familia; un refugio, donde lo simple es muy hermoso.
Nos levantamos temprano porque desde el sábado estaban comenzando a salir las codornices en la incubadora, y teníamos que preparar la jaula que será su cunero durante las próximas tres semanas. Como las codornices son muy inquietas desde que nacen, forramos la jaula con cartón para evitar que el aire les afecte y para que no se golpeen al saltar. Son pequeñas, frágiles y curiosas, así que cada detalle cuenta.
Then we place a lid from a jar of Chinese rice as a feeder and a special waterer that my husband makes using two lids and some mesh. He does this because, when they’re so small, they get into the water and can get sick. We learned that from other chicks we’ve raised; every experience teaches us something new. Finally, we install a heat lamp to keep them warm, which is essential for them to grow strong.
Luego colocamos una tapa de pote de arroz chino como comedero y un bebedero especial que mi esposo fabrica con dos tapas y una malla. Lo hace así porque, cuando son tan pequeñas, se meten en el agua y pueden enfermarse. Eso lo aprendimos con otras crías que hemos sacado; cada experiencia nos enseña algo nuevo. Finalmente, instalamos un bombillo para mantener el calor, indispensable para que crezcan fuertes.
To move them from the incubator to their nest, I placed them in a small box to keep them from getting hurt. They’re so tiny that it feels like you’re holding a handful of life pulsing in your hands. Once settled into their new home, they looked happy, active, and full of that energy that only newborn animals have.
Para trasladarlas de la incubadora a su cunero, las puse en una cajita pequeña para evitar que se maltrataran. Son tan diminutas que uno siente que carga un puñado de vida latiendo entre las manos. Ya instaladas en su nuevo hogar, se veían felices, activas y llenas de esa energía que solo los animales recién nacidos tienen.
This time, I laid nine quail eggs and twenty eggs from our laying hens, which are the ones that ensure we always have eggs at home. In that regard, we’re self-sufficient; we haven’t bought eggs at the market in years, and it’s incredibly satisfying to know that what we eat comes from our family’s hard work.
En esta oportunidad coloqué nueve huevos de codorniz y veinte de ponedoras, que son las que nos garantizan los huevos en casa. En ese aspecto somos autosustentables; hace años que no compramos huevos en los mercados, y es una satisfacción enorme saber que lo que consumimos viene del esfuerzo familiar.
After getting everything ready, we set out with the intention of filling up on gas because we have several activities planned for this week. On the way, a cup holder in the car came loose. It was a rather unpleasant moment, but my husband, with his patience and his tools, fixed the problem. We were able to continue on, fill up on gas, and return home without any major setbacks.
Después de dejar todo listo, salimos con la idea de colocar combustible porque esta semana tenemos varias actividades. En el camino, una copa de la caja del auto se aflojó. Fue un instante nada agradable, pero mi esposo, con su paciencia y sus herramientas, solucionó el problema. Pudimos continuar, cargar combustible y regresar a casa sin mayores contratiempos.
When we arrived, I felt like we needed to unwind from the stress of the moment, so I decided to make a meal that my husband and son love: fried chicken. While I was cooking, my son hopped on his motorcycle to go get a soda to beat the heat and go with our lunch. In the end, we wrapped up the day with laughter, stories, and that delicious chicken that always brings us together around the table.
Al llegar, sentí que necesitábamos compensar el estrés del momento, así que decidí preparar una comida que a mi esposo y a mi hijo les encanta; pollo frito. Mientras yo cocinaba, mi hijo salió en la moto a buscar un refresco para aliviar el calor y acompañar el almuerzo. Al final, cerramos el día entre risas, cuentos y ese pollo delicioso que siempre nos une alrededor de la mesa.
