Visiting the Gem of Miramar: The House of Green Tiles [eng/esp]

Hello, my friends in this community! Today I'm sharing a visit I'd been putting off for a long time—a visit to a mansion that is an icon of Miramar, in Havana. Although I've admired its facade many times, I had never been inside. I'm talking about the famous House of Green Tiles.

I had heard so much about it; its name evokes legends and mystery. But nothing compares to the experience of standing in front of it and then touring its restored rooms.

From a distance, the first thing that catches your eye is its roof covered with green tiles, with its small, conical tower standing out. It's not just any green; it's a deep green, contrasting with the bright blue of the Havana sky.

The house, designed in 1926 by architect José Luis Echarte, is the only example of the German Renaissance style on the island. It's like visiting a small European castle in the Caribbean.

I was struck by its well-maintained gardens and the wide, circular porch that wraps around the house. But what moved me most begins when you step inside.

The guide told us that the City Historian's Office undertook a monumental restoration. I shuddered to imagine those cracked walls, the water leaks, the peeling moldings, and the damaged woodwork. The restoration team researched, sought out original plans, and studied old photographs to restore its original splendor. It was a truly dedicated effort that earned it the National Restoration Award in 2010.

In the entrance hall, what I like most is the spiral marble staircase with its iron and wood railing. The guide explained that the original layout of the ground floor and first floor remains intact, which allows me to imagine what life was like for its former inhabitants.

The living room is charming, combining modern furniture with antique pieces, achieving great visual harmony. I lingered for a long time, admiring the collection of vases, the beauty of the furniture, the chandelier, and a piano, which is regularly used for concerts in this warm and welcoming atmosphere.

However, two things particularly struck me. The first were the paintings by the Cuban artist Carlos Guzmán, created specifically for the mansion. In them, the female figure represents the former owner, Luisa Catalina, who lived here for more than five decades. They are beautiful, vibrant works, but upon closer inspection… I discovered the most fascinating detail! The artist had embedded real objects in the paintings: buttons, candles, small items that create a unique texture and dimension. It's a subtle touch by the artist, only revealed to those who take the time to observe closely; it seemed to me a metaphor for the house itself, which holds secrets and surprises that not everyone can uncover.

The second was a small detail that demonstrates how much thought was put into every single element: an ornament with "cat's eye" motifs, a tribute to the owner's passion for these felines, which once roamed these very halls.

The dining room also has a very beautiful ambiance; its decorative objects, the glass cabinet with glasses, and the paintings all harmonize beautifully with the rest of the house.

Through a spiral staircase, which connects all the floors, I reached the attic, now converted into a unique conference room. From the small terrace, I could appreciate a beautiful view of Havana: the city stretching out in the distance and the entrance to the tunnel that connects Miramar with Vedado.

Getting to know the House of Green Tiles and its history filled me with joy and admiration. It's not just a beautiful house; it's a testament to the fact that it is possible to preserve our architectural heritage with respect, care, and talent.

This mansion now opens its doors, but not as a museum, but as a cultural center and a study of modern architecture. Concerts and art exhibitions are also held there. There's no better way to pay tribute to his legacy and showcase this gem of Cuban architecture. If you're in Havana, don't miss the opportunity to visit it. Visitando la Joya de Miramar: La Casa de las Tejas Verdes

Hola mis amigos de esta comunidad, hoy les comparto una visita que había postergado desde hace mucho tiempo a una mansión que es ícono de Miramar, en La Habana. A pesar de que muchas veces he admirado su fachada nunca había entrado. Les hablo de la famosa Casa de las Tejas Verdes.
Había oído hablar mucho de ella; su nombre evoca leyendas y misterio. Pero nada se compara con la experiencia de pararme frente a ella y, luego, recorrer sus habitaciones restauradas.
Desde lejos, lo primero que captura tu mirada es su techo cubierto de tejas de color verde, donde sobresale su pequeña torre en forma de cono. No es un verde cualquiera; es un verde profundo, que contrasta con el azul brillante del cielo habanero.
La casa, diseñada en 1926 por el arquitecto José Luis Echarte, es el único ejemplo del estilo renacentista alemán en la isla. Es como visitar un pequeño castillo europeo en el Caribe.
Me llaman la atención sus jardines cuidados y su amplio portal que recorre de forma circular la casa. Pero lo que más me conmovió, comienza cuando traspasas su umbral.
Supe por la guía que la Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad emprendió una restauración monumental. Me estremeció imaginar esas paredes agrietadas, las filtraciones de agua, las molduras desprendidas y la carpintería dañada. El equipo de restauración investigó, buscó planos originales, estudió viejas fotografías para devolverle su esplendor original. Fue un trabajo muy consagrado que le mereció el Premio Nacional de Restauración en 2010.
En el recibidor lo que más me gusta es su escalera helicoidal de mármol con baranda de hierro y madera. La guía explicaba que la distribución original de la planta baja y el primer piso se mantiene intacta, lo que me permite imaginar cómo transcurría la vida de sus habitantes.
La sala es encantadora, combina muebles modernos con piezas de época, logrando gran armonía visual. Me detuve mucho rato, admirando la selección de jarrones, la belleza de los muebles, la lámpara de techo y un piano, que se usa habitualmente para conciertos en este entorno cálido y familiar.
Sin embargo, hubo dos cosas que me impactaron profundamente. La primera fueron los cuadros del pintor cubano Carlos Guzmán, creados específicamente para la mansión. En ellos, la figura femenina representa a la antigua dueña, Luisa Catalina, quien vivió aquí más de cinco décadas. Son obras preciosas y de mucho colorido, pero al acercarme… ¡descubrí el detalle más fascinante! El artista había incrustado objetos reales en la pintura: botones, velas, pequeños elementos que crean un relieve y una textura únicos. Es un guiño del autor que solo se revela al que se toma el tiempo de observar de cerca, me pareció una metáfora de la casa misma, que guarda secretos y sorpresas que no todos pueden revelar.
La segunda fue un pequeño detalle que da cuenta de cómo se pensó en cada simple detalle: un adorno con “ojos de gato”, un homenaje a la pasión de la dueña por estos felinos, que alguna vez corretearon por estos mismos pasillos.
El comedor también tiene una ambientación muy hermosa, sus objetos decorativos, vitrina con copas y cuadros, todo tiene gran armonía con el resto dela casa.
A través de una escalera de caracol, que conecta todas las plantas, accedí al ático, ahora convertido en una peculiar sala de conferencias. Al asomarme a la pequeña terraza pude apreciar una vista muy hermosa de La Habana: la ciudad extendiéndose a lo lejos y la entrada del túnel que une Miramar con el Vedado.
Conocer la Casa de las Tejas Verdes y su historia me llenó de regocijo y admiración. No es solo una casa bonita, es un testimonio de que es posible rescatar nuestra herencia arquitectónica con respeto, cariño y talento.
Esta mansión hoy abre sus puertas, pero no como museo, sino como centro cultural y estudio de la arquitectura moderna. Se hacen también conciertos y exposiciones de arte. No hay mejor manera de homenajear su legado y dar a conocer esta joya de la arquitectura cubana.
Si están por La Habana, no dejen de visitarla. Es una experiencia que, estoy segura, también les robará el corazón.
