The Farm of the Mills: A Journey Through My Memories [eng/esp]

Hello friends, today I want to share with you a visit to a place that takes me back many years. I'll tell you about The Farm of the Mills (Quinta de los Molinos), a beautiful place steeped in history.
Walking through this lovely entrance brought back very fond memories of my childhood when my mother would bring me here on Saturdays because she worked at the Faculty of Agronomy, which was located within the village.

This farm is located in the heart of Havana, surrounded by buildings and avenues. It's a lush, verdant space, formerly the first Botanical Garden, and boasts a great diversity of plant species, many of which are endemic to Cuba. Exotic plants are still preserved here, which can only be appreciated and studied in this garden. This garden is very important because it truly is one of the city's green lungs.
It's interesting to know the origin of its name. It turns out that this was the farm for rest of the Captains General during the Spanish colonial period in the 19th century. There were also watermills powered by the water from the Royal Ditch to grind tobacco. For this reason, the locals began to call it Farm of the Mills, and this name has survived to the present day.
Upon arriving at the main mansion, one is greeted by a large garden and a striking fountain with three dolphins. A spacious park with several sculptures was being landscaped by gardeners.

This beautiful house also served as the residence of General Máximo Gómez of the Liberation Army, and is therefore now a museum dedicated to this important hero. The museum displays photographs and documents related to the War of Independence. It is an important resource for teaching history to children in an engaging and educational way.

We can still see the remains of the Royal Ditch, through which water flowed with great pressure, enough to power the watermills used to grind tobacco. There are also remnants of a small waterfall.

At the back, we can see an innovative project related to renewable energy sources. They have created a demonstration park showcasing different forms of energy: photovoltaic panels that use solar energy to produce electricity. An old watermill, like the one used to grind tobacco in ancient times, is on display.
It's interesting to know that the fence around this pond is made of a material called Ecomadera (Ecowood), which is made from recycled plastic waste of all kinds. It looks very strong, and its ecological value is significant. This material is highly durable and resistant; furniture can also be made from it.

Educational workshops are also held here, primarily for children and young people, focusing on environmental care, the conservation of flora and fauna, and the recycling of various products.
It was very pleasant to walk through its gardens again and step back in time, but the best part is seeing that its history has been preserved and new projects have been developed for environmental care, involving young people who are the inheritors of this legacy.

See you soon!

It’s good to see a space that has preserved history while teaching young generations the importance of caring for the environment.
That's right my dear friend. This place plays an important role in environmental protection. Thanks for your nice comment. Best regards 🤗
You're welcome my friend! Happy weekend!😍
I don't see many people in your photos, but maybe you just avoided taking photos with them... It would be a pity that such a beautiful place isn't more visited by locals and tourists... If you ask me, these kinds of places are my favorites! A lot of nature, peaceful surroundings, and a lot of history among those trees and walls!
Currently, I live in a part of Spain where we have many old mills that were used for making tobacco paper, which was then exported to Cuba, and probably South America too!

Thank you so much, @ph1102 , for the support. It's a pleasure to read your comment.
I also love this kind of place because of the lovely atmosphere surrounded by nature. I actually went very early on Sunday and we were the first to arrive, but more people come later. And on school days, there are frequent activities with the schoolchildren where they teach them about caring for the environment.
It's interesting what you say about the windmills where you live; our countries have a very close relationship.

Thanks so much my dear friend @jlinaresp. Thank you for the appreciation and support! Best regards!
The Farm of The Mills is indeed big not only in size but in relevance. From statues to gardens to museum, this place holds important information that must have shaped the city's character. It is full of history that provides further insight of the origin of the place. I like how you emphasized this place's history, since most of tourists overlook this part of a destination. Not only this holds great history, it is also shaping young minds. Those lectures and educational workshops held must be a gateway to enrich the place and the inheritors of it. Good thing it focuses on environmental awareness which is very relevant and useful today. I hope everyone who visited there learned what it is like to have a clean environment. Thank you for sharing this to us @mayramalu ❤️
