Finally Warming Up Around Canada Day

Waking up in the foggy mountains every morning, I finally feel the warm breeze surrounding me when I go outside with my dog. I usually wear rain boots when I go out in the morning because of the cool, damp air and the fog. Over the past few days, though, I've started wearing sandals and no longer need an extra jacket. I said to myself, "Yes, this is the temperature I've been waiting for!"

Actually, I don't mind the summer fog in the mornings. The fresh, gentle air feels wonderful. I can hear many different kinds of birds, and the trees in my yard and the little forest nearby are barely visible through the mist.

As I mentioned in the title, today is Canada Day. Canada Day is celebrated on July 1 every year, marking Canada's birthday. People enjoy fireworks, parades, concerts, and picnics, even in my neighbourhood. Many people wear red and white, Canada's national colours, and many communities hold outdoor events.

Last year, one of my students invited me to a Canada Day event held at our local community museum surrounded by nature. It was a wonderful experience. This year, however, both my husband and I are working on Canada Day. We don't mind working on the holiday, though. I can still feel the excitement and celebration all around us. I used to have Canada Day T-shirts when I worked at schools, but I don't have them anymore. I don't even own a red-and-white T-shirt now! Instead, I drew the Canadian flag on my whiteboard for my lessons.

Now, let me tell you about my garden. Beautiful flowers are beginning to bloom here and there almost every day. Flowers are fascinating. If I stand there watching them, they never seem to open. But the moment I get busy doing something else, they suddenly bloom as if they had been waiting for me to look away!

This is my grapevine, which is recovering very well after a major pruning. Last year, I harvested delicious ripe grapes from the first and second grapevines. The third vine, which is the youngest, hasn't produced any grapes yet. I think all of them will need new support posts and ropes this year.

Here are my potatoes. They look so healthy this year compared to last year's dry season. Last year was very difficult for everyone who grows vegetables. After adding fresh, nutrient-rich soil, they look much healthier and more stable.

As you can see, the wooden vegetable bed needs to be repaired. It was originally built by the previous owner. Unfortunately, he didn't use untreated wood for most of his projects, so much of it has rotted over time. For several years, we've been renovating the property, cleaning everything up, and gradually replacing the rotten wood.

My husband has many maintenance and rebuilding projects to tackle, and this vegetable bed is one of them. Hopefully, we'll be able to build a sturdy new bed for our vegetables. I can't wait to make homemade curry with these potatoes. Keep it up, little potatoes!

カナダデーの頃、ようやく暖かくなってきました

毎朝、霧に包まれた山の中で愛犬と一緒に外へ出ると、ようやくあたたかい風が吹いてくるのを感じるようになりました。朝は気温が低く、霧で湿ってひんやりしているので、いつも長靴を履いて外へ出ます。ここ数日は、上着を一枚羽織らなくてもサンダルで外へ出られるようになりました。そうそう、この気温を待っていたんだ！と、心の中でつぶやいてしまいました。

実は、夏の朝霧は嫌いではありません。やわらかく澄んだ空気がとても心地よく、いろいろな種類の鳥たちのさえずりが聞こえてきます。庭や小さな森の木々は霧に包まれ、ぼんやりとしか見えませんが、その幻想的な景色もまたいい感じです。

タイトルにも書いたように、今日はカナダデーです。カナダデーは毎年７月１日に祝われる、カナダの誕生日ともいえる祝日です。花火やパレード、コンサート、ピクニックなどを楽しむ人が多く、私の住む地域でもお祝いムードに包まれています。赤と白のカナダの国旗カラーの服を身に着ける人も多く、各地で屋外イベントが開催されます。

昨年は、生徒さんに誘っていただき、自然に囲まれたコミュニティにあるミュージアムで開かれたカナダデーのイベントへ仕事の後に行きました。とても楽しい時間を過ごしたのを覚えています。今年はというと、主人も私もカナダデーは仕事です。でも、祝日に働くことは特に気になりません。それでも、街全体から伝わってくるお祝いの雰囲気を十分に感じています。

学校で働いていた頃はカナダデー用に着るTシャツを持っていたのですが、今はもうありません。赤と白のTシャツも持っていないので、仕事用のホワイトボードにカナダの国旗を描いて気分を盛り上げました。

さて、ここからは庭のお話です。庭では、毎日のようにあちらこちらで花が咲き始めています。花って本当に不思議だなぁと思います。待っていると、なかなか花びらを開いてくれません。でも、少し目を離して別のことをしていると、いつの間にかきれいに咲いているのです。

こちらは、大きく剪定したあと、順調に回復しているブドウです。昨年は、１番目と２番目のブドウの木から、おいしく熟したブドウを収穫することができました。一番若い３番目の木は、まだ実をつけていません。今年は支柱やロープも新しくしてあげたほうがよさそうです。

こちらはジャガイモです。昨年の乾燥した夏と比べると、今年はとても元気に育っています。昨年は野菜を育てている人にとって本当に厳しい年でした。新しい栄養ある土を入れたおかげで、今年はとても安定して育っているように見えます。

写真でもわかるように、畑の木枠は修理が必要です。この木枠は前の家のオーナーが作ったものですが、残念ながら多くの場所で耐久性の低い木材が使われていたため、年月とともに腐ってきてしまいました。私たちは何年もかけて家や庭を整え、片付けをしながら、傷んだ木材を少しずつ交換しています。

主人には修理や作り直しをしなければならない場所がまだたくさんあり、この野菜畑もその一つです。丈夫な野菜用の木枠が完成するといいなと思っています。このジャガイモでカレーを作るのが今から楽しみです。ジャガイモたち、これからも元気に育ってね！
