Visit to the Ruins of a Sugar Mill and a bit of birding (+ Video)

It seems this has been the longest distance I’ve covered this year… truth is, I really enjoyed it and loved documenting the day for you.

Yesterday @muhammadhalim and I agreed to visit two interesting sites in Santa Fe. This is one of the localities of Havana I truly enjoy cycling to, not only because the nearness of the sea adds its magic, but also because the ride is wonderfully relaxed and the roads are in good condition — something always appreciated by a road cyclist. Well, let’s be honest 😂 I’m not a cyclist, just a girl who enjoys pedalling and uses the bike as a means of transport.

So we arranged to leave our homes as early as possible. He would pedal about 14 km, just as I would from my place, and we met at a halfway point to head towards the ruins of a sugar mill dating back to the late 18th century. Its ancient walls hold many stories already told, and others… others perhaps are only legends and, according to the historian who was there and kindly gave us some of her time, should remain quiet, without making too much noise.

Being there for a while, taking photos and chatting with my friend, filled me with a lovely kind of energy. Going out, having new adventures, socialising — it’s all so necessary, especially when the situations we constantly face are so stressful and create such a sense of pressure that, without even realising it, you fall into a vicious circle that’s hard to break out of.

After we left the sugar mill, we took the Pan-American road to go down to the lower part of the Santa Ana River, the river’s mouth. There we found a little spot where we waited for a while to see if we could spot any birds, and I think I must have captured something with my 45–200 lens, though those images still need to be processed.

Making this video has taken me some time, even though it’s nothing extraordinary, and it’s done with a simple editing programme… still, I’ve had a great time throughout the whole process, filming and stitching together those little clips.

You’ll see the sudden change in the weather… and me, as always, messing about a bit — just being myself. What else can I say.

It makes me very happy to be able to show you our little world which, if you really look closely, is full of charms and moments worth keeping.

It’s not over yet… hahaha…

What I’m saying there is that I’m determined to ride 2026 km in this 2026, hahaha… and to the motorcyclist who overtook me I said: ‘You just had to splash me, didn’t you! You brute!’ 🤣

What a great trip! It started with incredible sunshine and ended with heavy rain, plus the motorcyclist was completely inconsiderate. I was wondering the same thing. Some people go cycling in freezing cold weather, even at dawn, and I wonder how they do it. What courage! The videos are excellent.

But the photographs are also beautiful, especially those of the ruins and then the change of scenery with that beautiful water and those views. Thank you for this trip, Nani! Hugs!

😂 Motorcyclists, truck drivers… drivers overall… they’re all inconsiderate. They don’t see things from a cyclist’s point of view.

Courage… well, I think that to do what one loves, one has to overcome obstacles, because otherwise you’ll never have those moments of happiness and fulfilment. For them, there’s no choice but to go out like that in the middle of a harsh winter. Speaking of points of view, it’s simply a different way of seeing things. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be any cyclists in cold climates.

😁 Thank you very much, Avecilla, por el apoyo.

You're absolutely right! In both cases, ha ha ha, there wouldn't be any cyclists in cold climates... yes, yes... they're all inconsiderate... all of them!

Did you manage it?

Select Spanns (Latijns - Amerika), then reopen the subtitles option and you’ll find “Auto-translate” at the bottom. From there, you’ll be able to choose whichever language you want…
