The Tamarind Roundabout: a tribute to the city's four-hundred-year-old tree (Eng - Esp)
Hello, fellow nature lovers! It is a pleasure to greet you and wish you an excellent and blessed weekend. Today, Venezuela commemorates the birth of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, who—with the support of various heroes from different regions of the continent—achieved the independence of five South American countries. It is a national holiday marked by activities and parades in city squares. On this occasion, I am sharing my visit to the "El Tamarindo" roundabout, located on Arístiguieta Avenue along the Cumaná-Cumanacoa highway. This roundabout serves as a bus stop and a key meeting point and cultural landmark for the city, distinguished by a 400-year-old tamarind tree that has become a natural and cultural icon of the state.
As part of the city's beautification and landscaping program, the roundabout—now featuring gold and gray tones—was restored. A plaque placed near the tree's roots reads as follows: "El Tamarindo, sentinel of Cumaná. Designated a 400-year-old tree in 1974 and 1975 by Dr. Rafael Gómez during his tenure in the city government. It is a living symbol of perseverance, ancestral wisdom, and the natural wealth of our land. A natural and cultural heritage of Cumaná; to honor its presence is to honor our culture." I have passed by this roundabout many times, yet only now did I notice the plaque; I was amazed to learn the tree's age—it surely has many stories to tell! Nature is truly incredible, offering us beautiful gifts that endure through time.
Hola amigos amantes de la naturaleza, es un placer saludarles deseando que tengan un excelente y bendecido fin de semana, hoy en Venezuela se conmemora el natalicio del Libertador Simón Bolívar, quien con apoyo de varios próceres de diferentes regiones del continente logró la independencia de cinco países Sur Americanos, es un día festivo nacional , en el cual se realizan actividades y desfiles en las plazas de las ciudades; en esta ocasión les comparto mi visita a la redoma el Tamarindo ubicada en la avenida Arístiguieta carretera nacional Cumaná - Cumanacoa, este redoma es una parada de buses y constituye un importante punto de encuentro y referencia cultural de la ciudad, pues resalta por un árbol cuatricentenario de Tamarindo, que se ha convertido en una referencia natural y cultural del estado.
Con el programa de embellecimiento y ornato de la ciudad se restauró la redoma, la cual es de color dorado y gris, cerca de la raíz se colocó una placa donde se lee lo siguiente: "El Tamarindo, centinela de Cumaná.
Decretado árbol cuatricentenario en los años 1974 y 1975, por el doctor Rafael Gómez, ejerciendo la municipalidad de nuestra ciudad.
Es un símbolo viviente de la perseverancia, la sabiduría ancestral y la riqueza natural de nuestra tierra.
Patrimonio natural y cultural de Cumaná. Honrar su presencia, es honrar nuestra cultura.";
En varias ocasiones he pasado por esta redoma y hasta ahora fue que vi la placa, me sorprendió saber la cantidad de años que tiene el árbol, también muchas historias por contar je, je, la naturaleza es sin duda increíble y nos da lindos regalos que perduran en el tiempo.
A small plaza was built very close to the traffic circle—specifically on the traffic island at the intersection with Bermúdez Street, near the Guzmán Blanco Bridge. The tree located there is a significant part of the capital city of Sucre state and serves as a cultural landmark during the "Cumaná de Antaño" celebrations (marking the city's founding anniversary on November 27). This traffic circle is often associated with a colorful local figure known as "El Enano del Tamarindo" (The Tamarind Dwarf), a witty man who used to sell newspapers and coffee at this spot. Thanks to urban beautification and landscaping initiatives, the tree's area now features a protective wall and an identification plaque recognizing it as an emblematic cultural tree due to its great age.
A small walkway leads from the center of the planters toward the avenue. The plaza features a rectangular pedestal clad in reddish granite, set upon a base composed of two squares—one gray and one reddish. The planter itself is triangular with rounded corners. Also visible are the avenue leading to Cumanacoa, some colonial-style houses, and the flow of traffic. The garden's vegetation includes palm trees, the popular purple-leafed plants frequently used in local landscaping, and other recently planted small palms. Small purple-leafed plants also line the edges of the planter, complementing this beautiful natural setting that pays tribute to the "Sentinel of Cumaná": the Tamarindo Cuatricentenario (Quadricentennial Tamarind).
Muy cerca de la redoma construyó una pequeña plaza con dos jardineras ubicadas en la isla e intersección con la calle Bermúdez, donde se ubica el puente Guzmán Blanco, este árbol forma parte importante de la ciudad capital del estado Sucre y de hecho es un referente cultural en la celebraciones de Cumaná de Antaño (que corresponden al cumpleaños de la ciudad, el 27 de noviembre), se suele representar esta redoma con un destacado personaje como conocido como: **"El Enano del Tamarindo, quien vendía periódicos y café en esta parada y era muy ocurrente; con el programa de embelllecimiento y ornato y las nuevas estructuras, el área del árbol cuenta con un muro de resguardo y la placa de identificación donde fue reconocido como un árbol emblemático y cultural por su antigüedad.
En el centro de las jardineras hay una pequeña caminería que conduce hacia la avenida, en la plaza un pedestal rectangular cubierto con granito de color rojizo, la base es un la base está formada por dos cuadrados en los colores gris y rojizo, se observa la forma de la jardinera que es triangular con las puntas circulares, también se aprecia parte de la avenida que conduce hacia Cumanacoa, algunas casas coloniales y el flujo del transporte; entre las plantas del jardín destacan las palmeras, las conocidas plantas de hojas moradas que son muy utilizadas para el paisajismo y embellecimiento de la ciudad y otras palmeras pequeñas que han sido sembradas recientemente, en los bordes de la jardinera hay también pequeñas plantas de hojas moradas que complementan este hermoso entorno natural el cual rinde homenaje al Centinela de Cumaná, El Tamarindo Cuatricentenario.
Continuing along the traffic circle, we see that the next planter is V-shaped with rounded edges; the ground surface is concrete embedded with stones, and here we again spot purple plants, small palms in the center, and a lovely Ixora plant with red flowers. Next to this planter, one can partially see the Tamarindo traffic circle and the LED lights, which form a white rectangle.
A section of Comercio Street, notable for its colonial-style houses, is also visible. Next, we get a closer view of the planter and the surrounding streets, followed by a planter that caught my eye due to its octagonal shape; it features a beautiful Ixora plant in the center surrounded by smaller plants. Judging by the photograph, these were recently planted; in the near future, they will become part of this lovely natural setting, enhancing its beauty and creating a pleasant space for those waiting for transport at this stop—or simply for people running errands in the city center who pause to rest at the traffic circle. I enjoyed touring this area and seeing the plaque, the planters, and the beautiful natural environment taking shape around the Tamarindo traffic circle.
Continuando el recorrido por la redoma, observamos que la siguiente jardinera tiene forma de letra V, redondeada, el piso es de concreto con rocas incrustadas y aquí vemos nuevamente las plantas de color morado, pequeñas palmeras en el centro y una linda planta de Ixora, con flores rojas, al lado de esta jardinera, se observa parcialmente la redoma del Tamarindo y las luces LED que son un rectángulo de color blanco.
También se aprecia parte de la calle Comercio que destaca por sus casas de estilo colonial, seguidamente tenemos una vista más cercana de la jardinera y las calles circundantes, luego una jardinera que llamó mi atención por su forma octagonal, en el centro hay una linda planta de Ixora y pequeñas plantas alrededor, según lo que se ve en la fotografía, fueron sembradas recientemente y en un futuro cercano formarán parte de este hermoso entorno natural contribuyendo a su belleza y creando un espacio agradable, para quienes esperan el transporte en esta parada, o sencillamente realizan diligencias en el centro de la ciudad y se detienen a descansar en la redoma, me gustó el recorrido por esta zona, conocer la placa las jardineras y el hermoso entorno natural que se está formando en el área de la redoma del Tamarindo.

It’s lovely to see the importance recognised of these ancient trees, which form part of a city’s culture or serve as landmarks within it, or as a transition to another. I also really like the story you tell about the Tamarindo dwarf, those simple stories that become part of the local folklore.

This tree has witnessed important stories and events in the city; at over 400 years old, it has seen quite a lot! It was also the favorite spot of the popular "Tamarind Dwarf"—a witty, unique local character who became part of the city's culture. Even though I’d passed through this area many times, I hadn't realized the plaque was there.
I was surprised to see it, and even more so when I learned the tree's age. It’s amazing how nature surprises us, and it’s incredible that this old friend has endured through the years.

Este árbol es testigo de importantes historias y acontecimientos de la ciudad, con más de 400 años es mucho lo que ha presenciado jeje, también era el lugar favorito del popular enano del tamarindo, un personaje muy ocurrente y único en la ciudad que pasó a formar parte de la cultura local, aunque había pasado muchas veces por esta zona no sabía que la placa estaba allí.
Me sorprendí al verla y más aún cuando supe la cantidad de años que tenía el árbol, es increíble cómo la naturaleza nos sorprende y este amigo aún se conserva en el tiempo.

What an amazing blog! I just learned about the 400-year-old "El Tamarindo" in Venezuela. It's amazing how the city preserves its natural and cultural heritage through plaques and the arrangement of the roundabout. I think this could be an example for my country.

Wuaoo estoy muy impresionada por lo que cuentas sobre el árbol de tamarindo, y me da felicidad que rindieran homenaje a este arbol en su ciudad. Es increible que tenga tantos años y se ve aun pequeño y joven pues lo comparo con un árbol enorme de tamarindo que existía en la casa de mi abuela, de pequeña comia tanto su fruta que me daba dias de diarrea 🤭, la cuestión es que ese árbol era enorme y daba frutos todos los años, lamentablemente tuvo que ser cortado de raiz ya que colindana con el patio de una vecina, pero si el de su foto tiene 400 años entonces el que era de mi abuela superaba ese tiempo, 😪.
Me encanta como describe lo que vé dandole valor e importancia a los que nos rodea, la naturaleza. Gracias por su aporte @belkyscabrera
Hola bella, también me impresioné al ver la cantidad de años que tenía el árbol y sin perder tiempo consulté con algunos de los señores encargados dei ornato del lugar, quienes me explicaron que estos árboles, con las condiciones óptimas pueden vivir muchos años; desconocía que estaba la placa allí y al ver la cantidad de años que tenía dije wow!
Me da risa lo del árbol de tamarindo en tu casa, es decir tenías tu purgante 😂 sin necesidad de gastar, de pequeña también comía mucho tamarindo cerca de la casa habían varias plantas y se me irritaba la encía, aunque sabía que al comerlo esto pasaría, igual comía su sabor agridulce es agradable y el jugo también es muy bueno. 😋
