A Walk to Forget

avatar

My wife heard about a "forest light walk" not too far from us and we decided to take Smallsteps, as it is ending tomorrow. We took her last year to a winter one with ice sculptures which she enjoyed and since we have very little else to do, this seemed like something.

It was... something.

Let's Disco.

image.png

It is not that it was bad, but it was just kind of well, a few random lights in the forest, with many looking more like Christmas decorations bought from a warehouse store. Yet, it is lucky that we got there early, because we had to wait for about 15 minutes to get in, but as we were leaving around 45 minutes later, there were literally thousands of people queuing.

image.png

It is kind of endearing what Finns are entertained by, but hey, we were there too.

I guess no one had much else to do on a Saturday night.

There was also a projection show onto a building close by, that was quite underwhelming, but Smallsteps enjoyed seeing some butterflies and ladybirds - and I got a picture of this bee.

image.png

And these spiders, which might make for a decent Halloween cover image.

image.png

But yes - following worksite LED ropes to see random lights in the forest doesn't really constitute an exciting experience.

image.png

Look at this!

2005 string lights found in their natural habitat!!

image.png

And another that escaped from the group and is being chased down by solar garden lights.

image.png

But really,

I jest....

It wasn't all bad, because at least it got us out of the house and I was able to use my camera for more than taking pictures of a half-done kitchen.

image.png

Even if it was to see colored floodlights lighting tree trunks.

image.png

And more of that industrial LED rope, but this time, fashioned into ants.

image.png

And a large Christmas light bunny.
(I saved you from the reindeers)

image.png

But hey, out of the house, fresh air and

image.png

10,000 steps for the first time since August, which goes to show how much I have been sitting around the house, either behind the PC screen working, or renovating the kitchen. Not too many steps needed. I need to change that. But, I am also having my first glass of wine for a few months also tonight, and that is good for my heart ;)

Tomorrow, the organizing of the new kitchen continues in earnest, after what will be our first meal cooked in there.

Bacon and eggs.

Smallsteps favorite.

Luckily, there aren't many days she has any less than 20,000 steps.

All photos are awesome and creative. I like neon light decoration and led light decoration too.Walking is good for health and you made a big number of steps. Curious to see your first meal on the kitchen. Enjoy and share!

I don't think I will take images of the bacon and eggs, we don't even do toast ;)

The best bit was after we finished the walk - we had a grilled sausage - Grill might be Smallsteps' second favorite.

This looks pretty cool. As you know, we have Christmas light things here, but I don't know of one in a forest. I'd like to see that.

I can picture small's face when she eats dem B & E's. The other day on our video call her face lit up when I mentioned bacon and eggs! It was hilarious.

Everything is pretty low-key here, which is actually nice. It is all a bit more down to earth for this kind of thing - just something to do, nothing to Instagram about :)

She loves em! She'd eat bacon for every meal. Last weekend we got pizzas and when asked what she wanted on hers it was "well, bacon of course".

Her cousin is the same.

Last night I did a video call and asked what he had for dinner: Pizza.

I said I did too and he asked what one I had and when I said vegetarian he didn't know what I meant...I explained it's just vegetables and he screwed his face up at me and rolled his eyes as if I was the biggest nutbag that ever lived. Bloody four year olds.

Maybe for adults it wasn't top notch but hopefully Smallsteps was enchanted. I am a nerd and I would have enjoyed it LOL. Any excuse to get out in nature a bit is a good thing.

She liked it, but it was the grilled sausage from a stall after that was the highlight :)

It’s good to have those fun experiences not too far from the house, even if it was a little lame. We’ve done a few of those things with the little man and he enjoys it well enough and is appreciative of being brought somewhere. I think some of the only times he’s been bored is when we went to an amusement park and there were lots of roller coaster rides. His favorite? A toy excavator! Lol

Not gonna lie I was on there tearing shit up for a good 30 minutes myself lol.

The local things are always my favorite, because it doesn’t take a lot to get there and if it’s lame or not as cool, it was only a 5-10 minute drive (nothing is a walk where we are sadly) and hurts a lot less. We’ve done something where we drove 90+ minutes and it was horrible lol but that’s what we do as parents, try to give the kids as much enjoyment as we can!

Bacon and eggs is an epic first meal to cook on that shit man, love it!

I have always wanted one of those excavators!! :D

With some of these things there ends up being too much expectation and like you say, the longer the drive, the more painful. Finland is okay for this, as expectations can always be held in check :D

btw, did the backsplash in the kitchen make sense now that there is a better image?

That actually looks like a nice walk XP though I know for a fact that middle child would have hated the spiders XD Also good thing you got in early, as nice a walk as it is, I can't tell from the photos if it would have been one worth waiting ages to get into.

It wasn't all bad - but I didn't mention the worst part - the people behind us with annoying, screaming children....

The spiders are awesome in Finland! I have arachnophobia, but after living in Finland it is mostly gone, as they are just so lame. Nothing is poisonous enough to do any damage and they are tiny. One benefit of very cold climates. Snakes are the same, only two here and one is poisonous, but is only dangerous if allergic pretty much.

It's not the bitiness or the size she's scared of, it's the weird way that they move as far has I can tell from her common complaint of WHY DO THEY HAVE TO MOVE XD and also the fact that a couple of times J has had to go and deal with spiders he has told me that he had to get his glasses so he could see them XD

A reason to get out and walk, the lights may have been, well, somewhat boring, at least it was a walk, and reading the remarks, looks like it was worth it after for grilled sausage.

Yeah and it was nice to get out. I feel trapped inside of late, with far too much work keeping me inside day and night. And the sausage was pretty good even! :D

Our local zoo does something much similar to that. The first year they had it my son invited me along with his family to go. Yeah it was quite unadventurous. On the way out I said to the security guard I am glad it wasn't my twenty bucks that got me in here and he laughed.

spiders look quite real.

Thats a lot of steps. I thought that kids these days spend their entire day in the phones.

Smallsteps doesn't have a phone, she is an anologue kid and barely watches anything from the TV. Instead, she can read and write and does arts and crafts :)

10,000 steps is good, 10,000 steps in the forest is even better, 10,000 steps in the forest with the family is just wonderful.

Yeah it is nice. WE are lucky that nature isn't too far away from us (normal in Finland), but we don't walk outside together nearly enough of late.

Do you get out often?

Every day I walk the streets and parks, 2-3 hours, 7-10k steps. Not always with the family, schoolchildren have a lot of school assignments.

10684 steps, it seems Smalsteeps has recently not been making you tired as much as before :)
