A Weekend in Kastoria, Greece

Hello friends. I decided to spend this weekend in Kastoria, Greece. I often visit Greece because of its proximity to my home country. When my children were young, my summer vacations centered on this country, but now I also enjoy discovering the beauty and sights of Greece.During a two-day stay in Kastoria, a city in northwestern Greece, he focused solely on visiting the area's natural and cultural-historical sites.
The city is located on a peninsula surrounding Lake Orestiada. This lake covers an area of about 28 square kilometers with a maximum depth of up to 9 meters. About 200 birds live on the lake and it is protected by law. I spent Saturday in a tour of the city, found accommodation in a hotel, asked the locals where the locations I want to visit are. After lunch, I headed towards the Dragon's Cave. There is a path right next to the lake, and it led me to the cave.Venturing into the cave, I passed through 10 chambers, 5 tunnels, and 7 underground lakes. The path is 300 meters long, and the temperature is bearable. There was no lighting, so I brought a flashlight. According to legend, gold was once kept here—guarded by a dragon—which is how the cave got its name.

I returned to the hotel full of impressions. I planned to spend Sunday visiting cultural and historical monuments and museums. The Folklore Museum is housed in a well-preserved 18th-century house that once belonged to the Nerantzis-Aivazis family. It showcases the authentic layout of the rooms and furniture, traditional costumes, and historical tools used for fur processing—a key private industry in Kastoria's history.

I have a machine like this, too. I inherited it from my grandfather, who used to sew quilts.

In Dexamenis Square, I visited the Byzantine Museum. This museum stores a collection of about 700 icons and church objects created in the period from the 12th to the 17th century, collected from local city churches. I stayed there for 45 minutes and moved on. At a distance of 3 kilometers from the city center, on the very shore of the lake, is the church of the Virgin Mavriotise. The wall surfaces of this church contain preserved Byzantine frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries, which are visible on both the interior and exterior facades of the building.

Late in the afternoon, I set off for Serbia. Another adventure, and I am richer for having gained more historical knowledge.
