Mysterious Lichen

Symbiotic Relationship Between Fungus And Algae

Science in the true form can be proven incorrect information over time, now I know little to nothing about lichen except I find it fascinating, it grows everywhere in my garden. Rocks and trees over the years I have stopped to photograph these unusual forms of life, time to learn more!

IMG_6129.JPG

Lichen On Cycad

Lichen is an association of one or two fungus species and algae (cyanobacterium), what I found most interesting watching video then more research, it is possible more than two fungi are found depending on the make up in variants found.

Lichen Clinging/Growing On Rocks

Some say two or more algae with fungus, irrespective they arrive in all shapes and forms found almost everywhere I have visited, these complex organisms a sign of our air conditions, quietly absorbing the bad from the good to my understanding.

Lichen Tree Truck Growth

With moss often seen in close proximity in shaded conditions especially after rain led me to delve deeper learning this is a true plant and not fungi related. Nature always teaching, moss is flowerless green plant with no roots, reproducing via spores on stalked capsules, sounds similar to fungi but not related at all.

Not to feel uninformed this remark makes me happy, learning more then share into Hive, ‘Nearly half of all SA lichens are still mysteries to science we’ve been taking on the challenge and already found two new genera!’

Places I sourced information about this outlandish growth that is fungi related with a slight twist!

Hello there
Seems new things of fungi for me. Thank you for sharing

The moss seems beautiful. I see some people use green moss for tiny garden art in the glass

After rain we have moss appear in the most unusual places normally on rocks or on the tiled roof.

Lichen growth is constant year round, reminds me of undersea plant life.

I have researched a couple of years ago since we have a variety around our garden, never realized they are partially/more fungi.

America alone there are around 3600 different varieties explained in one piece of research, they haven't scratched the surface as to how many are over here already over 3000 so most interesting to learn more.

Algae plants can also make our place cool. Mushroom or fungi and Algae plants have a perfect combination specially when it both grows in one place.

From my biology lessons many years ago I was always under the impression algae grows in water, more like seaweed or similar plant life.

Wiki definition: "Algae is an informal term for a large and diverse group of photosynthetic, eukaryotic organisms."

This life form is quite unique in mix, thanks for sharing what you find in your region.

I agree rather outdoors for all plants and other living entities. Wish I could keep gecko and cockroaches permanently outdoors as well, no luck there!

Interesting stuff, not an organism most of us pay attention to in our surroundings, always nice to get curious, we learn all the time, especially the curios minds.

Good morning dear friend @joanstewart
I loved this post, very good research, to be totally honest, I didn't know that "Lichen" was a fungus, or rather, the formation of one or more fungi.

I take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful day.

Four minute video was superb, explaining what has been discovered. Scientists in Biology field now assisting our locals find out more with it not being restricted to wet regions only but literally everywhere.

Our planet is interesting, those who cannot find something to enjoy have missed the big picture completely.

Have a wonderful day as we move into another number, each larger than the previous!
