Sunburst Park: Iloilo's Green Sanctuary Amidst Urban Buzz
Hello Hivers!! It's me, Reign, sharing my recent stroll in the city of Iloilo.
Today, on another radiant day, with the sun casting its golden glow over the city, unfolds another discovery. Grateful for the occasional breaks in the clouds, we seized the opportunity to explore Iloilo's historic heart.
Our destination was Sunburst Park, a place that has always intrigued me with its blend of history and tranquility.
Sunburst Park, originally known as Plaza de Aduana, is a testament to Iloilo's rich past.
Situated in front of the Iloilo Customs House along J.M. Basa Street, the park was named in honor of the United States Army 40th Infantry "Sunburst" Division, which played a pivotal role in liberating Panay from Japanese forces during World War II. This division was warmly welcomed by Ilonggos, who greeted them with gifts of eggs, fruits, and candies made from local ingredients like camote and coconuts. The park stands as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the Filipino people and the liberating forces.
Since my last visit, the park has undergone significant improvements. It was called “Freedom Grand Stand” by then. A P19-million restoration project, completed in 2018, has revitalized the area, making it more inviting for both locals and visitors.
As I strolled through the park, I couldn't help but notice the lush greenery that now envelops the space. Tall trees provide ample shade, creating a cool respite from the midday sun. (There were actually kids playing hopscotch but when they noticed I was taking pictures, they slowly went to the side 😁)
(They made the seats shaped like a moon.)
New benches have been strategically placed, offering comfortable spots for visitors to relax and soak in the surroundings.

(The plaza center has these tiles designed into a big Sun)
Despite being nestled amidst the bustling streets and towering buildings, the park offers a serene escape. It's heartening to see how the city has preserved this historical landmark while making it accessible and enjoyable for the community.
Walking through Sunburst Park today was a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage.

As I left the park, I felt a renewed sense of appreciation for the spaces that connect us to our history and provide solace in our daily lives. I look forward to more visits to Sunburst Park, each offering new experiences and reflections.
