Giola, the natural pool where mermaids used to bathe on the island of Thassos, Greece

Hello travelers

In today's blog, I'm taking you with me to visit a natural pool formed by the collapse of the ceiling of a cave located right next to the sea. This place has a history and some spectacular legends.

But before we get straight to the point, let me tell you how I got here.
As we mentioned earlier, we came to Thassos Island by car, which is the most convenient way to visit the island.

From Limenaria (where we stayed), it was about 10-12 kilometers to the Astris resort, where there is a natural swimming pool.

If you come here by car, you have two options to get to Giola: either you park your car right on the side of the road and then follow the route on foot, or you drive down the main road for about 400 meters to the first paid parking lot. We chose the second option and parked in the first parking lot, where we paid 4 euros for 2 hours.

It is possible to drive closer to Gioa, but you will need a 4x4 vehicle as the road is steep and covered with sand, so if you do not have a powerful vehicle, you may not be able to get out of there.

Okay, I parked the car, paid the €4/2 hours, then followed the route on foot. It was very hot outside, so I felt like we would never get there.

If you do as we did, come here without bringing water or other liquids with you, you should know that there is only one tavern here where you can find everything you need, even something to eat. We made our first stop here, where we hydrated ourselves, and then continued on our way.

Below is some information about Giola that I found and thought was interesting.

The story of beautiful Giola, also known as "Aphrodite's Tear" or "Mermaid Pool," hides several legends behind it. One of them says that mermaids used to attract sailors to this place, singing to them and confusing their minds, while another legend says that Giola was created by Zeus himself for the goddess Aphrodite, whom he followed while she was bathing here.

After a few more minutes of walking, we reach the rocky part of the seashore, and here it's easy to spot Giola, as you'll see lots of people there.

Here's a tip: come here early in the morning or before sunset, otherwise it will be very crowded. We happened to visit at exactly the wrong time.

Please note that there is no entrance fee to visit Giola (apart from the parking fee). Another tip would be to bring water shoes to prevent slipping on the rocks.

At Giola, you can sunbathe or even swim. The natural pool is very large, but I don't know how deep the water is. Unfortunately, accidents do happen here, and tourists can suffer quite serious injuries, so be careful if you come here.

Wow, Giola looks amazing @triplug ! The scenery is really magical, especially with the legend of mermaids and Aphrodite that you told-so it feels even more mystical and interesting. Thanks also for the tips about parking and water shoes, that would be really useful for travelers who want to go there.

This post makes me want to explore similar places in my country... Greetings from Indonesia! 🇮🇩✌️

I believe there are places similar to Giola in other parts of the world. You can certainly find such amazing places in Indonesia. Indonesia has been on my list of places I want to visit for some time (but for now it is far too expensive a destination for me).

Thank you for stopping by.

It couldn't have been any other way; such natural beauty must have been created for the goddess Aphrodite and be home to beautiful mermaids. I imagine that mythology in my mind and it seems spectacular to me.

It is a paradise, with crystal clear, pure water, although you have to be careful when entering it. I suppose the rocks are a bit slippery, but it is a place worth visiting and enjoying, preferably at times when there are few people around. Thank you very much for bringing us this spectacular place with such incredible photos. Best regards!

Greek mythology is amazing, it's about gods or mythological creatures with impressive powers, and ultimately that has its charm, I really like the idea.

And yes, if you come here, you definitely need water shoes, as the rocks are quite slippery. Just before we got there, a tourist had an accident.

Thank you very much for your comment and thank you for stopping by.

I can almost feel how dry that landscape is even with all that water around. The location's connection to Greek mythology is really cool though. Even the mermaids which would lure sailors into the rocks and lead them to their demise.

Sometimes I wish I still lived in a time where such superstitions continued to exist. Perhaps some sailors still hold on to them in their own little cultures.

Indeed, most of the island of Thassos is arid, which is why the risk of fire is very high. In fact, there have been many vegetation fires on the Greek islands.

Greek mythology and legends are spectacular. I wondered what life was like in these places thousands of years ago.

Thank you for stopping by.
