Turn on the Tap

avatar

Phew. These days are going to be long!!

I was woken up by a banging door at around 4am and couldn't get back to sleep, so after heading to bed at 1am, I could do with a nap. One benefit was that I did get a chance to hit the gym here and will try and make that the start or end of my days, since it is just there.

Last night though, I was able to get out of the hotel for a quick bite to eat and a walk around a few streets with the other facilitators. Lisbon seems like a place that I would like to spend some more time and bring my wife, especially since they like to dance here and I reckon we could find some decent Kizomba places. I took my camera with me and snapped a few shots while walking, so this will be a rare photography post from me, instead of walls of text.

The first one is from the bathroom in my room, which might not be strange to many, but after living in Finland for 20 years, it has been a very long time since I have seen a hot and a cold top, as they only use mixer systems for sinks and showers.

We ate at a place called the Timeout Market, which had a large court with many different types of food on offer from small vendors - plus plenty of red wine to choose from, as well as other drinks. We had been recommended to try the octopus hotdog, so most of us gave it a go and it was pretty good, but the bread of the hotdog could have been a bit better, and the potato crisps on the side were very, very greasy. The grilled octopus was great though.

Then it was just off for a walk to see what we could see, before heading back to the hotel. We caught an Uber into the city, as our location is about 15 minutes away, but it is not too bad, with the fare being around €12.

P1220397.jpg

What is nice about at least where we were walking, is that a lot of the buildings are old and they are all different. Many have seen better days, but they are charming with a patina, creating grades and complexity in their appearance and while eclectic in range, all fitting together in a way that is somehow calming and homely.

P1220418.jpg

I didn't manage to get a photo yet at least, but the trams on the roads are really cute. Old-school and smaller than normal, so they look like they are an upsized toy. If I get to come back here one day, I will take a series of shots with just them.

P1220399.jpg

Being Sunday night, there weren't that many people around the streets, but we did manage to find a busker playing in a square with a little bar, so we sat down and had a drink, listening to who I think was a Brazilian, sing slow love songs in Portuguese.

P1220403.jpg

P1220400.jpg

It was really nice to sit down with the colleagues in this kind of setting, as in this group, we have known each other for quite a while and we were able to speak freely and have fun teasing each other a lot, as well as dive into more personal discussions about society and relationships. And for this group, we didn't have to talk much at all about work-related stuff, unlike some people who don't know how to speak with colleagues about anything other.

P1220412.jpg

P1220411.jpg

This morning, we ate breakfast together with my supervisor, who is also the organizing person for the entire event, and we were straight into work. The breakfast was great here, but paired with constant work conversation, it wasn't overly enjoyable and after, we then went straight into four hours of planning, run-throughs and set up of the tonight's start and the next three days ahead. There is a mountain of content and a lot of finicky little points to remember, so I will have to go through it all again by myself tonight and take additional notes, as the details just don't stick.

P1220420.jpg

P1230427.jpg

And, because the details don't stick, while there is plenty of decent red wine around, it looks like I am going to have to wait until the last evening to have more than one or two, otherwise I won't be delivering anything coherent throughout the days. That is okay by me, but I have I am 99% sure that these fridges in the hotel restaurant are going to get a pretty good workout over the coming days, with a few hundred sales people from around the world visiting most nights.

Sure, this isn't an ideal trip away, but there are some upsides to being here and I like the feeling of just being somewhere different, talking with people "out of character and context" as people are a little less their business selves and a little more in a holiday mood, so the discussions flow freely. For internal communication and collaboration, these kinds of events are invaluable and I think that the way this has been organized, it will make an impact on the organization going forward, rather than just be a information dump and drinking session, as it was "back in the day" when it was organized by others.

It will still be good to get home though.

We had been recommended to try the octopus hotdog

I think I tried some octopus canned food once. But I did not like it.

The buildings are old but look more beautiful. Taking your camera out of the hotel, you have taken some beautiful photographs and shared them with us, along with a brief description of your experience in the city.

What beautiful memories I have of Lisbon I have family cousins and uncles on my father's side for many years I have not been in my country there are many Portuguese and in fact, their lifestyle has a lot of joy in the veins of mixing with the Spaniards, from North Africa, Europeans, from America (Caribbean) with my neighbors from Brazil.

And be careful with the tap, watch that the hot water comes out fuming...

Bring good and new memories when you return home to share with your family and maybe schedule a nice vacation in Praia da Ursa is beautiful and is relatively close to Lisbon

Ah - you have family here :)
It seems like a pretty cool place and would be fun to spend a week in, getting to know what else is around (other than the hotel).

Definitely a huge mix of people :)

My aunt and uncle have owned a vineyard for many years.
Ugh yes, a lot of kinds and good people with those mixes are very emotional and cheerful...have a great day and hopefully, you can have the time to know that beach near Lisbon.

It would be quite a nice (possible difficult at times) lifestyle to own a vineyard :)

If it is a lifestyle of a lot of work the vineyard my uncles are already big now their children and grandchildren take care of it.

Lisbon does look like it would be a pretty cool place to visit. Great photos by the way. I get up pretty much every weekday at 4 AM to work out, so I totally know how you feel. Some days are definitely harder than others. I usually get to bed a while before 1 AM though!

I wish I was an earlybird, rather than a night owl. Do you find the morning workouts as effective?

Not really, but that is just my lifestyle I think. If I didn't get up and do it right away I wouldn't do it by the time I got home from work. I can tell the days I don't get up it kind of throws my whole day off. My hope was once I got into a routine it would be easier or at least a little enjoyable. Here I am two or three years in and that still isn't the case. I think if I were actually seeing some results I might feel differently, but I don't think I have lost a single pound since I started...

I guess it comes down to diet then for you. It is a massive factor for me.

You would think so, but I actually eat pretty well. My wife went to a nutritionist and they said they wished all of their patients ate like her and I do. Tons of fruits and veggies. High fiber, high protein. I don't get it. If I had to guess, it's probably the alcohol but we only drink a couple each night on the weekends.

The way you write... it sounds like it's time for a good long vacation?

It has been seven years since my wife and I have travelled together... definitely time for a vacation.

Seems interesting, i may add Lisbon to my list, even if I may struggle with the language. How did you do, did you used English?

English has been fine everywhere we have been so far. One of the people was speaking Spanish with the locals and getting by.

Great walk around the city at night! Wine, grilled squid, talking in your company. Like and repost :)

It might be the only night out for me, but at least it was a good one and the company was worthy :)

Its obvious your having a good time despite the fact that you went for a work trip, this is possible because you have good people around you not too serious minded coworkers.
😲 Wow lots of red wine 🍷

Don't forget to buy some Port to take home with you. I never realised how many different varieties of port there were, till I visited Portugal.

I haven't been much of a port drinker, but I think I will try one or two. Do you like them?

They're great as an after dinner liqueur (only drink a small amount in a liqueur glass). Try the white port, it's lighter than the ruby version.

We have just one tap style, left is for normal water right is for hot water.

I have seen photos with trams in Lisbon. It seems the trams of Lisbon are very famous and identifed with the city.

It is a beautiful city so far, but I don't know what it is really like until I have spent some time with locals. That won't happen this trip though.

Oh I agree! It is the interactions with the local people that I meet that give me the Fondest Memories of any of the places that I have ever traveled to. In Lisbon a man at the bus stop heard me trying to figure out the map using my English language dictionary, (back in the day) and he engaged in conversation and then proceeded to sit near me on the bus and give me a tour of of the sites that we were going past and tell me some history about the city. My own private tour guide! He even rode to my end destination, even though it was further than he had originally intended to go, simply because there were a few more sites that he wanted to point out to me. Another wonderful memory of Lisbon is of a woman that I met in a small museum who shared with me what it had been like growing up in Portugal under communism. We both ended up in tears and there were lots of hugs.
People are the reason I always stay in Pousadas rather than hotels it's so much easier to meet people!

Just for something different. I like black and white a lot.

Ah! So this is Lisbon and good photos that you have here.
They say that a change is as good as a holiday and I am glad that you enjoy the change in context.

Yes - it is nice to be away, regardless of it not being a holiday. There will also be some "reminiscing" when we return, so there is a bonding element involved where we connect on shared experience.

It is that bonding experience that develops trust and mutual co-operation to reach and at times exceed the targets. Teams perform so much better when they all own the vision.
We hope that you will continue to enjoy the adventure.

Portugal is on the list to check out as not only am I a foodie who loves their cuisine they are also favorable to the crypto fraternity for now at least. Safe travels and I know you will knock the presentations out the park.

Those are such amazing photos. All the old buildings make such good photos, especially in black & white as it is easier to mask the ones that haven't been looked after.

I always thought this kind of overseas planning sessions or retreats are a sort of reward. Yes you get some work done, but you also get to let your hair down a little too.

It is a reward of a kind, but these ones are quite active in the sense that there will be development created from it. They tend to be pretty "wet" events, but a lot comes out of them, especially since the sales organization has about 30 percent new faces over the last two years. There is quite a lot of growth.

Sounds like a rough night. Hope you could catch up on sleep later.

I'd love to try that octopus hotdog. Octopus is a very popular food in Japan so I have it often, but I don't think I've ever seen it in hotdog form.

Anyway, wonderful photos!
