Welcome to Golubac fortress

I will tell you about an amazing fortress, which looks like from a fairy tale, like the castle of the princess and the knight from the cartoons we watched as children. This is the Golubac Fortress, which dates back to the Middle Ages, and is located on the territory of the Serbian National Park Đerdap.

I love this place, whenever I have free time and when I pass by this fortress, I make sure to stop by and I always have the same feeling as when I first visited this place.

The fortress was built in three parts, the first part is the Front Town, then the Back Town and finally the Upper Town. This fortress was built on the foundations of the previous fortress built by the ancient Romans. Then this area was conquered by the Bulgarians, and this fortress became part of the Bulgarian empire. Wars on the Balkan peninsula were not so rare, on the contrary, some wars were fought literally every day, so that soon Byzantium conquered this part of the territory. The Bulgarian Empire saw the excellent strategic position of this fortress, that's why they attack the Byzantine Empire and again the Bulgarians conquer this fortress, all this happens in the Middle Ages.

When I already mentioned that the fortress is in an excellent location, it is because it was built on the banks of the Danube, and at the place where it is right at the entrance to the Djerdap gorge. According to scientific research, scientists claim that the fortress as we know it today was built in the 13th century by Serbs. Of course, from then until today, the fortress has been renovated and expanded countless times, everything depended on the need and purpose of the fortress, that's why the fortress was adapted to all needs.

Former Hungary copied this beautiful fortress to itself, supposedly that they built it, but it can be seen that the fortress was mostly ruled by Serbs and Orthodox, which tells us that there is a small Orthodox chapel in the tower of the fortress. Of course there are times when the Ugars also controlled the fortress, as I said in the Middle Ages wars were a daily occurrence.

The fortress is really beautiful, it's almost completely renovated, that's why there are hundreds of visitors at any time, they come from all over the world, because everyone wants to see the fortress from fairy tales and cartoons live, and they can experience that in Golupac.

As far as I understand, tourists are most interested in the legend surrounding the name of this fortress, because it has the word dove in its name. The legend says that at one point this fortress was occupied by a dangerous ruler, there was a Serbian population in the fortress, that ruler liked a Serbian girl and he wanted her in his harem, she refused and he chained her to a rock as a punishment and today she is in the middle of the Danube, that girl's name was a dove, she received an offer to repent and live in a harem with a man she does not love or to be chained to that rock until her death without food and water, she as a moral girl that she kept close to her chose to die alone chained to the rock... And that's how the fortress was named after her
