The main reason I included Montañita in my travel itinerary, and I stayed there for a couple of days, was because very close to this town there was the chance to go whale watching for humpback whales, a natural spectacle I didn’t want to miss. So on my second day along these coasts, I paid for a tour to go to Puerto López to see these giants of the sea live.

El motivo principal por el que incluí Montañita en mi itinerario de viaje, y me quedé allí un par de días, fue porque muy cerca de este pueblo había la posibilidad de ir a observar a las ballenas jorobadas, un espectáculo de la naturaleza que no quería perderme. Así que en mi segundo día por estas costas, pagué una excursión para ir hasta Puerto López a ver en vivo y directo a estos gigantes del mar.

The group wasn't very large, we boarded a small two-story boat and set sail. Once again, the day was cloudy, and it even drizzled a little, but we were assured that we would definitely see the whales, which come to these waters every year between June and October to breed.

El grupo no era muy grande, nos montamos en una pequeña embarcación de dos pisos y comenzamos la navegación. Nuevamente el día estaba nublado, y hasta lloviznó un poco, pero nos garantizaron que sí veríamos a las ballenas, que llegan a estas aguas todos los años entre junio y octubre para reproducirse.

This excursion wasn't just about watching humpback whales, we were also heading to Isla de la Plata, which is about 44 km from Puerto López, to see more wildlife: fish, turtles, and birds. About half an hour into the trip, the boat stopped, and we began to notice the water churning right in front of us, and suddenly, whales were breaching!

Esta excursión no sólo incluía la observación de ballenas jorobadas, también íbamos a la Isla de la Plata, que está a unos 44 km de Puerto López, para ver más fauna: peces, tortugas y aves. Cuando teníamos como media hora en el mar, el barco se detuvo, y frente a nosotros comenzamos a notar el agua agitada, y de repente ¡ballenas saltando!

My excitement was as immense as the bodies of these cetaceans 😃, and I didn't take many photos because I preferred to watch them with my own eyes rather than through a lens.

Mi emoción era tan grande como los cuerpos de estos cetáceos 😃, y no tomé tantas fotos porque preferí mirarlas con mis ojos en vez de a través del lente.

The guides told us about these marine mammals and gave us some basic information, such as the fact that they can live up to 50 years, measure over 15 meters in length, and weigh more than 30 tons, and that they come to Ecuador both to mate and to give birth.

Los guías nos hablaron sobre estos mamíferos marinos y nos dieron información básica, como por ejemplo que pueden vivir hasta 50 años, miden más de 15 metros y llegan a pesar más de 30 toneladas, y que llegan a Ecuador tanto para aparearse como para dar a luz.

I’d had the chance to see whales before, but they were a different species, very small, so it was pretty impressive to be face-to-face with the humpbacks. Their size was unreal, and the way they leaped out of the water, lifting their entire bodies out of the sea. Plus, their leaps created waves that rocked our little boat 😅.

Yo había tenido la oportunidad de ver ballenas pero de otra especie, muy pequeña, así que fue bastante impresionante estar frente a las jorobadas. Era irreal su tamaño y cómo saltaban sacando su cuerpo completo del mar. Además, sus saltos provocaban olas que hacían tambalear nuestro barquito 😅.

After this fascinating encounter, our journey continued to Isla de la Plata. The sky was still cloudy, so the sea looked somewhat dark and foreboding.

Después de este fascinante encuentro, nuestro viaje continuó hasta la Isla de la Plata. El cielo seguía nublado, así que el mar se veía algo oscuro y tenebroso.

As we approached land, we began to see countless birds, and in the water, many colorful fish, beautiful tropical fish.

Cuando nos estábamos acercando a tierra, empezamos a ver muchísimas aves, y en el agua muchos peces de colores, hermosos peces tropicales.

The guides threw food at them to get them to come closer so we could see them better.

Los guías les lanzaron alimento para que se acercaran a nosotros y los viéramos mejor.

As we were nearing the shore, a group of sea turtles swam around us. They were very friendly, I guess they’re used to people. The guides fed them too, and we took the opportunity to take some photos.

Ya casi llegando a la orilla nos rodeó un grupo de tortugas marinas. Eran muy amigables, supongo que están acostumbradas a la gente. Los guías les dieron alimento también y aprovechamos para fotografiarlas.

Isla de la Plata is part of Machalilla National Park, Manabí Province, and covers an area of about 6 square kilometers. We were told that it’s called “the poor man’s Galapagos” (because it’s much cheaper to visit 😁) or “the little Galapagos,” since its geography and wildlife are almost identical to those found on the legendary islands.

La Isla de la Plata forma parte del Parque Nacional Machalilla, provincia de Manabí, y tiene una superficie de unos 6 km cuadrados. Nos dijeron que le dicen “la Galápagos de los pobres” (porque es mucho más barato visitarla 😁) o “la pequeña Galápagos”, porque su geografía y fauna es casi igual a la que se puede ver en las legendarias islas.

We got off the boat and walked a short distance until we reached the entrance to a dirt trail. There we found the park ranger station, and our guide was waiting for us to begin a hike around the island.

Bajamos del barco y caminamos un corto trecho hasta llegar a la entrada de un sendero de tierra. Allí se encuentra el puesto de guardaparques y nos esperaba el guía para comenzar una caminata por la isla.

It is currently a national park, which is why no one lives on this island, but we were told that it has had inhabitants in the past. For example, the Manteña culture, an indigenous civilization that inhabited this region of the country, and later the Incas also used it for their ceremonies worshiping the sun and the sea. It was also a refuge for pirates, and in the 20th century, a wealthy family built a hotel here, a building that, since 1980, after the island was designated a protected area, has served as the headquarters for the park rangers.

Actualmente es un Parque Nacional, por eso no vive nadie en esta isla, pero nos contaron que en su historia figuran algunos ocupantes. Por ejemplo la cultura Manteña, una civilización indígena que habitó esta región del país, luego los incas también la utilizaron para sus ceremonias de culto al sol y al mar. También fue refugio de piratas, y en el siglo XX una familia adinerada construyó un hotel aquí, edificación que desde 1980, tras ser declarada la isla como zona protegida, pasó a ser la sede de los guardaparques.

Since this island is mountainous, much of the hike was uphill. This gave us some beautiful panoramic views. And as soon as we gained a little elevation, we began to spot some of the island’s main wildlife: the birds.

Como esta isla es montañosa, gran parte de la caminata fue en ascenso. Esto nos permitió tener unas bellas vistas panorámicas. Y apenas alcanzamos un poco de altura, comenzamos a ver ejemplares de la principal fauna que hay aquí: las aves.

Both resident and migratory birds live here. Since I was fortunate enough to visit the Galapagos Islands during this trip through Ecuador, I can say that Isla de la Plata does indeed resemble them. The seabirds found here are the same as those found in the famous archipelago.

Aves residentes y migratorias hacen vida aquí. Como en este viaje por Ecuador tuve la fortuna de poder visitar las Islas Galápagos, puedo decir que es verdad que la Isla de la Plata se les parece. Las aves marinas que se ven aquí son las mismas del famoso archipiélago.

The landscapes, with their black rocks and the deep blue of the sea, are also similar.

Los paisajes, con sus rocas negras y los azules profundos del mar, también son similares.

The same goes for the animals' behavior. Just like in the Galapagos Islands, the animals here don't shy away from us humans either. You can walk right past the birds and they won't fly away, they just go about their business.

Otra cosa igual es el comportamiento de la fauna. Tal como en las Islas Galápagos, aquí tampoco nos huyen a nosotros los humanos. Puedes pasar al lado de las aves y ellas no se van, siguen en lo suyo.

There's no doubt that these seabirds are very charismatic. Perhaps they're used to visitors, which is why they pose so naturally for photos 😊.

Sin duda estas aves marinas son muy carismáticas. Quizás están acostumbradas a las visitas, y por eso les gusta posar para las fotos con mucha naturalidad 😊.

We continued our ascent, taking in the spectacular view of the sea. Further up, we came across a romantic scene, the guide told us that the blue-footed boobies were in the midst of courtship. They were making loud noises 😄.

Continuamos el ascenso, con el paisaje espectacular hacia el mar. Más arriba nos encontramos con una escena romántica, el guía nos dijo que los piqueros de patas azules estaban en pleno coqueteo. Emitían fuertes sonidos 😄.

Then we came to a spot near a sort of cliff, and there were hundreds of albatrosses and frigatebirds there, some perched in the trees and others flying.

Luego llegamos a una parte cerca de una especie de acantilado, y allí había cientos de albatros y fragatas, unas posadas en los árboles y otras volando.

It was the first time I’d ever seen frigatebirds, and up close at that, so I didn’t miss the chance to photograph their striking, puffed-up red chests. The guide explained that the males do this to attract the females.

Era la primera vez que veía fragatas, y muy de cerca, así que no perdí la oportunidad de fotografiar sus llamativos pechos rojos inflados. El guía nos explicó que los machos hacen esto para atraer a las hembras.

The hike took about two hours in total, I think, it was a round trip of about 5 km. In the end, it wasn’t so bad that the day was cloudy, because since there’s no shade around here, the sun would have worn us out.

Este recorrido fue de más o menos unas dos horas, creo que en total, ida y vuelta, fueron como 5 km de caminata. Después de todo no fue tan malo que el día estuviese nublado, porque como no hay sombra por aquí, el sol nos habría agotado.

We made our way down slowly to get back to the boat, and before getting on board, I took off my hiking sandals to wash my feet, they were covered in dirt. I liked the color of the sand on this beach.

Fuimos bajando poco a poco para regresar al barco y antes de montarme me quité las sandalias de trekking para lavarme los pies, los tenía llenos de tierra. Me gustó el color de la arena de esta playa.

On the way back, we saw the humpback whales again, we weren’t expecting that! And they were more active, breaching more often. These magnificent animals come from Antarctica and travel over 8,000 km to reach the coast of Ecuador and breed there. I highly recommend this experience!

Durante el viaje de regreso pudimos ver de nuevo a las ballenas jorobadas, ¡no lo esperábamos! Y estaban más activas, dando más saltos. Estos grandiosos animales vienen de la Antártida, y recorren más de 8.000 km para llegar y reproducirse en la costa de Ecuador. ¡Recomiendo vivir esta experiencia!
