Buenos Aires Zoo, a place that no longer exists - Argentina 🇦🇷 El Zoológico de Buenos Aires, un lugar que ya no existe - Argentina

...Or at least it doesn't exist as I knew it.

…O al menos no existe como yo lo conocí.

Greetings travelers! In my previous post I recalled my trip several years ago to the city of Buenos Aires, and one of the places I left out, in order to extend a little more in its review, was the city zoo, which closed in mid-2016.

¡Saludos viajeros! En mi anterior publicación rememoré mi viaje de hace varios años a la ciudad de Buenos Aires, y uno de los lugares que dejé por fuera, para poder extenderme un poco más en su reseña, fue el zoológico de la ciudad, que cerró a mediados de 2016.

I wasn't too sure about visiting it, because I think these places are sad, depressing for animals, but my mom thought it was a good plan, and well, we went. Located in the neighborhood of Palermo, and surrounded by many buildings and traffic noise, it didn't seem a suitable space for wildlife, when we entered we found several species loose around, in a lake and in the green areas.

Yo no estaba muy segura de visitarlo, porque creo que estos lugares son tristes, deprimentes para los animales, pero mi mamá pensó que era un buen plan, y bueno, fuimos. Situado en el barrio de Palermo, y rodeado de muchos edificios y ruido del tráfico, no parecía un espacio adecuado para la vida silvestre, al entrar nos encontramos con varias especies sueltas por ahí, en un lago y en las áreas verdes.

Inaugurated in 1888, it was one of the oldest zoos in the continent and the first in Latin America. Its surface area was 18 hectares and its design was inspired by European zoos, where the architectural style of the enclosures that housed the animals had to do with their origin. For example, for the deer that came from northern Europe, chalets were built; where the elephants were housed, temples were built like the religious ones in India; the camels in an Egyptian building, and so on with all the others.

Inaugurado en 1888, fue uno de los zoológicos más antiguos del continente y el primero de América Latina. Su superficie era de 18 hectáreas y su diseño se inspiró en los zoológicos europeos, donde el estilo arquitectónico de los recintos que albergaban a los animales, tenía que ver con su origen. Por ejemplo, para los ciervos que venían del norte de Europa, se hicieron unos chalets; donde iban los elefantes se construyeron unos templos como los religiosos de la India; los camellos en una edificación egipcia, y así con todos los demás.

I observed that there were animals such as bison, alpacas and camels, with more natural facilities, they walked on land, there was vegetation around them, while others were enclosed in spaces with lots of cement, with glass windows and in general a too artificial habitat, for example some of the big cats, the chimpanzee, and others, it was very sad to see and I didn't want to take pictures of them.

Observé que había animales como los bisontes, alpacas y camellos, con instalaciones digamos más naturales, caminaban sobre tierra, había vegetación a su alrededor, mientras que otros estaban encerrados en espacios con mucho cemento, con ventanales de vidrio y en general un hábitat demasiado artificial, por ejemplo algunos de los grandes felinos, el chimpancé, y otros, fue muy triste de ver y no quise hacerles fotos.

As you can see, the animals I photographed were the ones I saw in the best living conditions, at least they didn't look stressed walking around. Without a doubt the one that surprised me the most was the rhinoceros, I had never seen one live and direct and I didn't imagine it was so huge, looks like a war tank.

Como ven, los animales que fotografié son los que vi en mejores condiciones de vida, al menos no se veían estresados dando vueltas. Sin duda el que más me sorprendió fue el rinoceronte, nunca había visto uno en vivo y directo y no me imaginaba que era tan enorme, parece un tanque de guerra.

According to the information in the brochure we were given, the zoo housed at that time more than 2,500 animals belonging to 350 species, both native and exotic, some of them in danger of extinction.

Según la información del folleto que nos dieron, el zoológico albergaba en ese momento más de 2.500 animales pertenecientes a 350 especies, tanto autóctonas como exóticas, algunas de ellas en peligro de extinción.

They also had an area with contact animals, that is, you could approach them to pet them, like this pony.

También tenían una zona con animales de contacto, es decir, que te podías acercar a ellos para acariciarlos, como este poni.

My mom has always liked monkeys, she loves to watch them, because of course, they are a lot of fun. She stood in front of them for quite a while, but she did agree with me that they were kept in a terrible place, a gloomy castle-style building, surrounded by fences.

A mi mamá siempre le han gustado los monos, le encanta observarlos, porque claro, son muy divertidos. Se quedó parada frente a ellos un buen rato, pero sí estuvo de acuerdo conmigo en que los tenían en un lugar terrible, una edificación lúgubre tipo castillo, rodeado de cercas.

Apart from various problems, such as administrative, other important reasons why the Buenos Aires Zoo was closed in 2016 were the complaints about the inadequate conditions in which the animals lived, deaths of some specimens, among other things. Then, what the authorities did was to change, let's say the classic concept of this type of enclosures, and turned it into an Ecopark. This Ecopark opened its doors at the end of 2018 with the idea of being a conservation space, with trails, educational programs, etc., and to reduce as much as possible the number of animals that were there, so many species were sent to reserves inside and outside Argentina, and they only left there the long-lived animals that could no longer adapt to another place. I read several articles on the Internet about the current state of the place and although they still have some animals on exhibit, they have focused on working on conservation, rescue and reinsertion of animals. Well, this is the trend that many zoos around the world have been adopting and I believe that due to the great damage that humans have done to other living beings, these criticized institutions at least contribute a little to stop the extinction of many species.

Aparte de diversos problemas, como el administrativo, otras razones de peso por las que el Zoológico de Buenos Aires fue cerrado en el año 2016, fueron las denuncias por las condiciones inadecuadas en las que vivían los animales, muertes de algunos ejemplares, entre otras cosas. Entonces, lo que hicieron las autoridades fue cambiar, digamos el concepto clásico de este tipo de recintos, y lo convirtieron en un Ecoparque. Este Ecoparque abrió sus puertas a finales de 2018 con la idea de ser un espacio de conservación, con senderos, programas educativos, etc., y de reducir lo más posible el número de animales que se encontraban allí, por lo que muchas especies fueron enviadas a reservas dentro y fuera de Argentina, y sólo dejaron allí a los animales más longevos que ya no se podrían adaptar a otro lugar. Leí varios artículos en Internet sobre la actualidad del lugar y aunque aún tienen algunos animales en exhibición, se han enfocado en trabajar en la conservación, rescate y reinserción de animales. Bueno, es la tendencia que han ido adoptando muchos zoológicos alrededor del mundo y creo que debido al gran daño que le ha hecho el ser humano a los demás seres vivos, estas criticadas instituciones al menos contribuyen un poco a frenar la extinción de muchas especies.

I show you below some of the buildings that this park had when we went, and that are still there because they were declared National Historic Monuments, in total there are 42 and they reflect the different architectural styles of the countries of origin of the exotic animals they housed. There are also many works of art and decorations along the trails, such as sculptures and fountains.

Les muestro a continuación algunas edificaciones que tenía este parque cuando fuimos, y que aún están allí porque fueron declaradas Monumentos Históricos Nacionales, en total son 42 y reflejan los diferentes estilos arquitectónicos de los países de origen de los animales exóticos que albergaban. También hay muchas obras de arte y decorativas por los senderos, como esculturas y fuentes.

After leaving the zoo, we went for a snack and a walk through the woods of Palermo, a really beautiful area.

Al salir del zoológico, nos fuimos a comer algo y a pasear por los bosques de Palermo, una zona realmente hermosa.

Then we took the Subway to visit Abasto, an area famous because the singer Carlos Gardel grew up here. We walked through its busy streets and visited one of the largest shopping malls in the city, the Abasto Shopping, a restored building where the Abasto Market used to be located between 1893 and 1984.

Luego tomamos el Subte (Metro) para ir a conocer Abasto, una zona célebre porque aquí se crió el cantante Carlos Gardel, por allí caminamos por sus concurridas calles y conocimos uno de los centros comerciales más grandes de la ciudad, el Abasto Shopping, una edificación restaurada donde anteriormente, entre 1893 y 1984, funcionó el Mercado de Abasto.
