✈️ Hello Hive family! Today I’m back with another chapter of my adventures in Sri Lanka!

Leaving Anuradhapura and Mihintale behind, we set off toward Trincomalee, and it felt as if we had crossed into an entirely different world without travelling far at all. Suddenly the culture changed, the religion changed, the colours changed, even the way the gods were represented was completely different. From Buddhist stupas and serene white statues, we passed to Hindu temples overflowing with colour, carvings and divine figures we had never seen before. All of this in the same day.

After visiting Trincomalee, we would head to a quiet beach area where we spent the night enjoying the sea and resting for a while. And the next morning, on our way to Kandy, we planned one last stop: an elephant safari. A perfect mix of culture, nature and adventure, all happening almost back-to-back.

Dejando atrás Anuradhapura y Mihintale, pusimos rumbo a Trincomalee, y fue como entrar en un mundo completamente distinto sin habernos alejado demasiado. De repente cambió la cultura, cambió la religión, cambiaron los colores y hasta la forma de representar a los dioses era totalmente diferente. Pasamos de estupas budistas y estatuas blancas y serenas a templos hindúes llenos de color, de figuras, de detalles y de símbolos que nunca habíamos visto. Todo esto en el mismo día.

Después de visitar Trincomalee, nos dirigiríamos a una zona tranquila de playa donde pasamos la noche disfrutando del mar y descansando un rato. Y a la mañana siguiente, camino a Kandy, teníamos planeada una última parada: un safari de elefantes. Una mezcla perfecta de cultura, naturaleza y aventura, todo ocurriendo casi seguido.

Trincomalee – Koneswaram Temple

Once we arrived in Trincomalee, everything felt new again. Koneswaram Temple was our first stop, standing dramatically on top of a cliff that falls straight into the Indian Ocean. Coming from the Buddhist world of Anuradhapura and Mihintale, the contrast was extreme. Here everything was Hindu: vibrant colours, detailed carvings, mythological figures and a completely different symbolism. It was fascinating to see how two religions can coexist so naturally on the same island, just a few hours apart.

One of the most striking sights was the large tree covered with hundreds of tiny wooden cradles. Families hang these miniature cribs as offerings, asking for protection, blessings or fertility. Each one was decorated with colourful ribbons and little pieces of fabric, creating a sort of magical tree of wishes swaying in the breeze. It was impossible not to stop and look at every detail.

The entrance of the temple was just as impressive. The gopuram, overflowing with sculptures of gods, demons, guardians and legends, rose above us in an explosion of colour. Every figure seemed to be telling a story. And then, a few steps further, we came across the enormous statue of Shiva, painted in blue, sitting with a calm but powerful presence, holding his trident as he looked out towards the horizon. Seeing him with the ocean behind was genuinely breathtaking.

Walking around the complex felt surreal. The view of the sea, the smell of incense, the bells, the prayers, the carved statues… everything mixed into one of the most unique experiences of the trip. Sri Lanka never stops surprising you, and Trincomalee proved it once again.

Trincomalee – Templo Koneswaram

Cuando llegamos a Trincomalee, todo volvió a sentirse diferente. El Templo Koneswaram fue nuestra primera parada, situado de forma espectacular en lo alto de un acantilado que cae directamente al océano Índico. Veníamos del mundo budista de Anuradhapura y Mihintale, y el contraste era total. Aquí todo era hindú: colores vivos, relieves detallados, figuras mitológicas y un simbolismo completamente distinto. Era fascinante ver cómo dos religiones pueden convivir con tanta naturalidad en la misma isla, a solo unas horas de distancia.

Una de las cosas que más nos impresionó fue el gran árbol lleno de cientos de pequeñas cunas de madera. Las familias cuelgan estas cunas diminutas como ofrendas, pidiendo protección, bendiciones o fertilidad. Cada una llevaba cintas y telas de colores, creando una especie de árbol mágico de deseos que se movía con la brisa. Era imposible no detenerse a observar cada detalle.

La entrada del templo también era impresionante. El gopuram, repleto de esculturas de dioses, demonios, guardianes y leyendas, se alzaba sobre nosotros en una explosión de color. Cada figura parecía contar una historia. Y unos pasos más adelante, nos encontramos con la enorme estatua de Shiva, pintado de azul, sentado con una presencia serena pero poderosa, sosteniendo su tridente mientras miraba hacia el horizonte. Verlo así, con el océano detrás, era realmente sobrecogedor.

Pasear por todo el complejo fue una experiencia surrealista. La vista del mar, el olor del incienso, las campanas, las oraciones, las esculturas… todo se mezclaba en una de las vivencias más especiales del viaje. Sri Lanka no deja de sorprender, y Trincomalee nos lo dejó claro otra vez.

Inside the Koneswaram complex, the walls are covered with vibrant sculpted scenes. They’re not meant to be literal depictions but symbolic representations of Hindu mythology and moral teachings. Each figure, colour and gesture carries meaning: devotion, protection, wisdom, struggle, transformation.

People come here to pray, offer flowers, light oil lamps and quietly ask for blessings. It’s a living place of worship, not just something for tourists to look at. The energy feels different when you’re surrounded by families, devotees and monks moving through each room with complete sincerity.

One of the most striking sculptures is the bright red multi-headed figure. That is a representation of Ravana, a mythological king associated with Sri Lanka. His many heads symbolise knowledge, power and the complexity of human nature. Seeing him sculpted like this, surrounded by gods and sages, adds even more colour to the temple’s atmosphere.

Dentro del complejo de Koneswaram, las paredes están llenas de escenas esculpidas muy coloridas. No son representaciones literales, sino interpretaciones simbólicas de la mitología hindú y de enseñanzas morales. Cada figura, cada color y cada gesto transmite ideas como devoción, protección, sabiduría, lucha o transformación.

La gente viene aquí a rezar, a dejar flores, a encender lámparas de aceite y a pedir bendiciones en silencio. Es un lugar de culto vivo, no solo algo que los turistas observan. Se nota en el ambiente cuando ves a familias, devotos y monjes moviéndose con una sinceridad total por cada sala.

Una de las esculturas más llamativas es la figura roja con muchas cabezas. Es una representación de Ravana, un rey mitológico muy ligado a Sri Lanka. Sus múltiples cabezas simbolizan conocimiento, poder y la complejidad de la naturaleza humana. Verlo así, rodeado de dioses y sabios, le añade aún más fuerza y color al templo.

After finishing our visit to this wonderful temple, we headed towards the place where we would spend the night. We felt like staying somewhere close to the beach, somewhere calm where we could rest and enjoy the sea after such an intense day. So we took a tuk-tuk and went a little further up the coast, until we reached the beautiful Nilaveli Beach.

We stayed in a small guesthouse that we instantly loved. Quiet, simple, surrounded by palm trees, and just a short walk from the shore. It was the perfect place to slow down, breathe, and let the sound of the ocean reset us after all the temples, colours and heat of the day.

The beach was absolutely stunning. There wasn’t a soul in sight; we had it entirely to ourselves. The sand was pure white, the day was perfect, and the ocean looked like something out of a dream. We swam, we relaxed, and we let the sun and the waves do their magic. The guesthouse was lovely, one of those places you wish you could stay in a little longer. It felt like the calm after the storm, exactly what we needed after such an intense day. We knew we had to recharge, because the next day a long journey awaited us. We would be heading all the way to Kandy, but not without making a very special stop along the way to see elephants in the wild, living freely in their natural habitat.

Cuando terminamos de visitar este maravilloso templo, nos dirigimos hacia el lugar donde pasaríamos la noche. Nos apetecía quedarnos en algún sitio cerca de la playa, un lugar tranquilo donde descansar y disfrutar del mar después de un día tan intenso. Así que cogimos un tuk-tuk y subimos un poquito más por la costa hasta llegar a la preciosa Nilaveli Beach.

Nos alojamos en un pequeño guesthouse que nos encantó desde el primer momento. Tranquilo, sencillo, rodeado de palmeras y a pocos pasos de la orilla. Fue el lugar perfecto para bajar el ritmo, respirar y dejar que el sonido del océano nos reseteara después de todos los templos, los colores y el calor del día.

La playa era una maravilla. No había ni un alma; la teníamos completamente para nosotros. La arena era blanca como la nieve, el día precioso y el mar parecía sacado de un sueño. Pudimos bañarnos, descansar y dejarnos llevar por la calma del lugar. El guesthouse fue todo un acierto, de esos sitios donde te encantaría quedarte un día más. Fue como la calma después de la tormenta, justo lo que necesitábamos tras un día tan intenso. Sabíamos que teníamos que reponer fuerzas porque al día siguiente nos esperaba un viaje largo hasta Kandy, haciendo antes una parada muy especial para ver elefantes en libertad, viviendo en su propio entorno salvaje.

As I was saying, we took a bus and headed toward Kandy because we wanted to sleep there that night, wake up early the next morning and take the famous train to see the tea plantations. But that belongs to another day. On the way to Kandy we made a stop to visit the elephants on a wildlife safari. Along the road we even saw a beautiful deer, almost like a real-life Bambi.

When we arrived, we were able to use the bathrooms, which, as you can see in the photos, were extremely well ventilated since they didn’t even have walls. Then we reached the entrance where the jeeps were waiting for us. Standing inside the jeep was tougher than I expected. After a while my arms were sore from holding on so tightly to avoid falling, but it was absolutely worth it. I felt like I had stepped into a scene from Jurassic Park.

Seeing the elephants in their natural habitat was something unforgettable. They moved in groups, big ones with their babies, eating, walking, existing completely free. It was incredibly beautiful to watch. I just hope they don’t get too stressed with all the jeeps passing by, although I imagine the guides know what they’re doing. We also saw buffalo and many kinds of birds. It truly felt like an adventure, one of those experiences you carry with you for life.

Como decía, cogimos un autobús y nos dirigimos hacia Kandy porque queríamos dormir allí esa noche, levantarnos temprano y coger el famoso tren para ver las plantaciones de té. Pero eso pertenece ya al siguiente día. A mitad de camino hicimos una parada para visitar a los elefantes en un safari de vida salvaje. Por el camino incluso vimos un ciervo precioso, como un Bambi real.

Cuando llegamos, pudimos usar los baños que, como veréis en las fotos, estaban bastante aireados porque ni siquiera tenían paredes. Después llegamos a la entrada donde los jeeps nos estaban esperando. Mantenerse de pie dentro del jeep fue más duro de lo que pensaba. Al final me dolían los brazos de agarrarme tan fuerte para no caerme, pero mereció muchísimo la pena. Me sentí como dentro de una escena de Jurassic Park.

Ver a los elefantes en su hábitat natural fue algo inolvidable. Se movían en manada, enormes, con sus crías, comiendo, caminando, viviendo totalmente libres. Fue precioso de verdad. Solo espero que no se molesten demasiado con tanto coche, aunque imagino que lo tendrán controlado. También vimos búfalos y muchísimas aves. La verdad fue una aventura increíble, de esas que se te quedan grabadas para siempre.

When we finished this wonderful experience, we waited for the bus to pick us up, backpacks on our shoulders, ready to continue our journey toward Kandy. It felt like the day had already given us so much, yet Sri Lanka still had more surprises waiting for us. Here I’ll leave you a photo of Kandy railway station from the next morning, the place where we would catch the train for one of the top experiences in any Sri Lanka adventure: the six-hour train ride through endless tea fields.

It was magical. I would meet so many people along the way, sharing laughs, photos and even music as the train curved through the mountains. But that story belongs to another day.

Cuando terminamos con esta maravillosa experiencia, estuvimos allí esperando a que el autobús nos recogiera con nuestras mochilas para continuar nuestro viaje hasta Kandy. Sentíamos que el día ya nos había regalado muchísimo, pero Sri Lanka aún tenía más sorpresas preparadas para nosotros. Aquí os dejo una foto de la estación de Kandy del día siguiente, desde donde cogeríamos el tren para una de las grandes experiencias del Top 10 en Sri Lanka: un viaje de seis horas atravesando los campos infinitos de té.

Fue precioso. Conocería a un montón de gente durante el trayecto, compartiendo risas, fotos e incluso música mientras el tren se abría paso entre montañas y plantaciones. Pero esa historia será para otro día.
